Pfeiffer’s undefeated and 12th-ranked men’s basketball team has added two more players to the mix and may be ready to make a run for Division II national prominence.

Prospects Andrew Pieters (Oviedo, Fla.) and Randall Terry (Lakeland, Fla.) will be eligible for Friday’s road game at Davis & amp; Elkins in West Virginia.

Both are 6-foot-5 juniors recruited by assistant coach Brian Ferguson. Ferguson described them as “terrific young men who have their priorities in order.”

Both can play any position in coach Dave Davis’ system.

Pieters played at Lake Howell High School and nationally ranked Des Moines Area Community College and chose Pfeiffer over Tampa and Florida Southern.

Terry reportedly has a 48-inch vertical jump. He played at Mulberry High School and Hillsborough Community College, which won 26 games.

“Brian did a great job getting us two quality players,” Davis said. “We have not had much success in the past recruiting Florida, but Brian has made tremendous progress.

“Both these guys have the potential to be major contributors. Hopefully, they will give us the depth to become the all-out pressing team we want to be.”

* Ellington All-American

Catawba defensive end Ron Ellington, a junior from Charlotte Independence, has been named to the AFCA Division II All-America team.

The only other player from the SAC on the team is Wingate cornerback David Jones.

Ellington was named the SAC Defensive Player of the Year, posting 8.5 sacks and a team-leading 74 tackles.

* Free Catawba game

Catawba athletics is offering a Christmas gift to the community — free admission to the men’s basketball game this Sunday at 2 p.m.

The Indians face Lander in their final game before the Christmas break. Catawba teams will not be at home again until a Jan. 3 doubleheader with Lenoir-Rhyne.

* Hipps shines

Sophilia Hipps (North Rowan) scored 17 points and had 12 rebounds in South Carolina State’s 47-45 overtime loss to Savannah State on Tuesday.

* Wrestling tourney

Rowan County’s annual wrestling tournament is set for Saturday at Salisbury High.

South is the defending champion. The tournament will be conducted on three mats and starts at 9 a.m. Each squad will wrestle each of the other five squads.

Times will be listed in tomorrow’s Scoreboard.

* Davie swimmers split

Davie County’s girls swim team beat Central Davidson 94-76.

Davie freshmen Autumn Jones and Taylor Moore swam to two individual first places each and were part of two winning relay teams.

Davie’s boys lost an 86-82 decision to the Spartans.

Drew Esposito, Justin Lee and Daniel Wendel won two individual events apiece for the War Eagles.

* SHS swimmers second

Salisbury’s swim teams finished second to Central Davidson in a three-team meet that also included Ledford.

Salisbury’s girls had 107 points to Central’s 120. Central’s boys piled up 146 points to 47 for the Hornets.

Garrison Stevens had firsts in the 100 breast (1:18.74) and 200 IM (2:31.68) for the Salisbury girls.

Madi Ralston won the 100 fly (1:08.27) and 500 free (5:46.50).

Sarah Freitag won the 50 free (28.96) and was second in the 100 back.

Mallory Gardner was second in the 200 free and 100 fly. Susie Wear was second in the 50 free.

Salisbury’s 400 free relay team — Molly Robinson, Gardner, Ralston and Freitag — finished first in 4:24.89.

Grant Martz had a first-place finish for the Salisbury boys in the 500 free. Jordan Del Piano placed second in the 100 fly.

* Salisbury Academy

Salisbury Academy’s boys basketball team topped Statesville Montessori 37-29.

Jon Hall scored 14 points to lead the Jaguars (5-2). Skip Wood had 12 rebounds.

Salisbury Academy’s girls (6-1) used a team effort to beat Statesville.

* Bulldogs still unbeaten

West Rowan Middle’s boys downed Southeast 63-24 in eighth-grade basketball.

B.J. Sherrill (12 points), Clifford Long (10), John Knox (nine), Domonique Noble (eight) and Steven Watkins (six) were the leading scorers for the Bulldogs (6-0).

Raymond Jones led rebounders with seven caroms.

Caleb McCora with five points and Carson Herndon and Xavier Parks with four each paced the Patriots (0-5).

* Sacred Heart hoops

Sacred Heart’s boys basketball team used a balanced offense to beat Statesville Montessori 51-46.

The Dolphins (12-4) were led by Jack Young (11 points, five assists), Connor Miller (10 points, 12 rebounds) and Mike Strobel (eight points, eight rebounds).

Roy Dixon, James Kyger and Phil Tonseth added eight points each.

* Williams to Shaw

Livingstone graduate Maurice Williams has been hired as Shaw’s sports information director.

* Catawba skills camp

Catawba is offering an All-Skills Baseball Showcase Camp on Jan. 13 and 14 at Newman Park.

The two-day clinic allows high school prospects to showcase their talents and skills while receiving personal instruction from college coaches and professional scouts.
