Jonathan Efird hit two big 3-pointers in the fourth quarter and went 4-for-5 at the foul line down the stretch to lead A.L. Brown’s boy basketball team to a 59-55 win over Sun Valley.

It was the SPC opener for the Wonders (5-2), who got 17 points from Efird, nine points and six rebounds from Jacob Newman and eight points from Josh Gray.

Brown trailed 32-27 at halftime but used a 20-5 third-quarter run to take control.

* Sun Valley’s girls defeated the Wonders. A score wasn’t available at press time.

Davie loses twin bill

Mount Tabor’s boys basketball team rolled to a 76-55 win over Davie County in a CPC opener.

Mount Tabor (4-4, 1-0) outscored the War Eagles 18-5 in the second quarter.

Drew Absher led Davie County (4-5, 0-1) with 13 points. Darius Hall had 10.

* Mount Tabor’s girls put the clamps on Davie’s leading scorer Meisha Fowler in a 56-35 win against the War Eagles. Tabor held Fowler to four points on 2-for-8 shooting.

Davie County (3-6, 0-1) had no one in double figures. Joni Garrett scored a team-high six points for the War Eagles.

NWC stuns Vikings

Jon Hathcock scored 20 points as Northwest Cabarrus’ boys basketball team defeated Central Cabarrus 58-53.

“I really feel good for the kids,” NWC coach Daniel Jenkins said. “We’re like N.C. State and Wake Forest over here (in Cabarrus County). We’re always that third team. So this shows we’re just as good as they are.”

Nick Quigley scored 12 points for the Trojans (5-1), who play host to North Mecklenburg on Friday.

North Hills hoops

The North Hills varsity boys basketball team lost to Rockwell Christian 49-39.

Garry Miller led the Eagles with 15 points. Josh Richardson and Travis Williams scored six each.

* The North Hills Middle School boys team beat Rockwell Christian 51-17. Jonah Marsh scored 16 points and Tripp Caldwell eight for the Eagles. Carson Mann hit two 3-pointers.

* The North Hills Middle girls beat Rockwell 37-8. Laura Butner had 14 points and 14 rebounds. Ruthann Thomas and Cacy Honeycutt were keys for the Eagles.

Lee takes third

Salisbury’s Allison Lee shot 80-84–164 to finish third in the 17th annual Charles Tilghman Junior Golf Championship held at The Surf Club in North Myrtle Beach, S.C. She was competing in the 13-15 age group.

South jayvee boys hot

South Rowan’s jayvee boys basketball team beat Mooresville 36-29 on Monday. South (6-1) won its fifth straight. John Davis had 14 points. Jason Grant had eight.

College hoops

Tracey Croner (East Rowan) was named Guilford’s student-athlete of the week. Croner, a sophomore forward, averaged 21.5 points in two wins.

* Campbell’s Maggie Rich (East) scored five points in a 58-33 loss to Coastal Carolina on Monday.

Erwin wrestlers win

The Erwin Middle School wrestling team won its 26th straight match against county opponents by beating China Grove 48-42. It came down to the last match between the heavyweights.

Erwin improved to 5-0. China Grove (5-1) suffered its first loss.

Erwin is home against Corriher-Lipe at 4:30 on Thursday.

Sacred Heart hoops

Roy Dixon had 19 points and James Kyger had 18 in Sacred Heart’s 56-38 boys basketball win over Hickory Christian.

Kyger also had 10 rebounds.

Phil Tonseth had 10 points and 11 boards. Brian Bauk had five assists, five steals and six points.

The Dolphins (11-4) expect to get Colin Sullivan back from a broken arm this week.
