The second annual gingerbread house workshop at Rowan Museum put the “fun” in fundraiser. Held Dec. 3 at the museum, 202 S. Main St., the event was attended by more than 60 children and their parents and grandparents.

“By Sunday afternoon, I didn’t want to smell gingerbread or see another piece of candy for a long time,” said Kaye Brown Hirst, the museum’s executive director.

But she smiled as she said it.

“We completely covered the floor in drop cloths and the kids got these sugar highs,” Hirst said. “One little girl was eating as fast as she built her gingerbread house.”

The museum supplied pre-assembled gingerbread houses and a wide variety of candies, cereals and animal crackers with which children could use to decorate.

“You can’t help but eat it,” Hirst noted.

The workshop is not a contest, she added. “They just decorate and we take pictures, and the children get to see Santa.”

Hirst, Clyde Overcash and another volunteer decorated about a half-dozen leftover houses. These houses and several other of the museum’s gingerbread house kits are available for sale.

Next year’s gingerbread workshop will take place the first Sunday in December.

“It’s a great way to kick off the holiday season,” Hirst said.
