Pfeiffer teams still perfect

Pfeiffer’s men’s basketball team got 31 points from DeMario Grier and hung on to defeat Coker 88-86 on Sunday in Hartsville, S.C.
Pfeiffer (6-0, 3-0 CVAC) led 43-40 at the half.
Trailing 74-72 with 5:29 left to play, the Falcons put together a decisive 8-0 run.
Robert McGriff scored 14 points for Pfeiffer. Logan Call had 13 points and eight rebounds.
Pfeiffer women 6-0
Kalee Smith’s 19 points and 19 rebounds led Pfeiffer to a 75-69 win at Coker on Sunday.
A big 3-pointer from Lauren Brittingham put the Falcons (6-0, 3-0) ahead to stay late in the game.
College hoops
Sophomore Clifford “Pete” Burns (Davie County) is off to a strong start with Brunswick Community College (5-1).
The 6-foot-8 Burns is averaging 15 points, 10 rebounds and shooting 62 percent from the floor for a high-powered team that’s already topped 100 points three times.
* Phillip Williams (West Rowan) was held to two points and three rebounds, but Winthrop still beat Northern Illinois 72-62 on Saturday.
* Maggie Rich (East Rowan) scored four points in Campbell’s 57-54 win over Gardner-Webb on Saturday.
* Ashley Watkins (Salisbury) scored 12 points for Queens in an 85-82 overtime loss to Erskine on Thursday.
Watkins scored 18 points and had six boards on Sunday in a 79-68 win over Chowan.
* Shayla Fields (Salisbury) scored seven points and had four rebounds and two assists as N.C. State beat Temple 59-57 on Saturday.
* Sophilia Hipps (North Rowan) scored eight points for South Carolina State in Saturday’s 74-61 loss to North Carolina A & amp;T.
* Allison Schafer (Davie) had 15 points and a career-high 13 rebounds to lead Mars Hill to an 87-82 win over USC Upstate on Saturday.
* Lees-McRae’s Rene & eacute; Roberson (West) scored four points, and Brittany Roberson (West) scored two in an 89-77 CVAC loss to Barton on Saturday.
* Tracey Croner (East) scored 15 points as Guilford blew out Hollins 83-26 on Saturday. Croner shot 7-for-8 from the field.
* Meredith’s Brittany Cornelius (East) scored eight points in Friday’s loss to Rochester Institute of Technology and four in Saturday’s loss to Shenandoah.
McCanless Couples
David Hunneycutt, Brice Branch and Gary Maddry were the winning team in the McCanless Couples League’s latest nine-hole event. They shot 35. Ty and Beverly Cobb finished second at 36. Paul and Nancy Ceremuga shot 37.
Suggs signs with Pitt
Pitcher Heather Suggs (South Rowan) has offcially signed with Pitt Community College’s softball program.
Pitt coach Junior Bailey expects Suggs to share pitching duties with freshman Candace Cavenaugh this spring.
“Heather is a strong pitcher,” Bailey said. “I’m glad we were able to get her to come play at Pitt. We had offered her a scholarship last year and she decided to go elsewhere.”
