Sophomore Shayla Fields scored 10 points as N.C. State’s women’s basketball team won at UC-Santa Barbara 64-55 on Sunday.

Fields leads the Wolfpack (4-2) in scoring at 11.4 points a game. She’s 9-for-16 on 3-pointers and 14-for-17 on free throws.

* Tracey Croner (East Rowan) made both her field-goal attempts in Guilford’s 65-52 loss to Methodist on Sunday.

* Niagura Boyde (A.L. Brown) connected on her only shot of the game for Methodist.

* Brittany Roberson (West Rowan) is averaging 6.5 rebounds per game for Lees-McRae.

* Mars Hill junior Allison Schafer (Davie County) is off to an All-SAC start, averaging 16.3 points and 9.3 rebounds in the Lions’ first three outings.

COLLEGE MEN’S BASKETBALL

Coker freshman Michael Gore (South Rowan) scored four points in seven minutes of action in a recent loss to Ohio Valley.

* Marcus Mitchell (West Rowan) and Tristan Rankin (North Rowan) have helped St. Paul’s get off to a 1-1 start.

Rankin is averaging 8.5 points and 3.5 rebounds. Mitchell averages 6.0 points and 2.0 boards.

COLLEGE FOOTBALL

True freshman defensive lineman Anthony “Whopper” Williams (NW Cabarrus) has contributed to Appalachian State’s football run with nine tackles, including four for loss.

* ASU’s Billy Riddle (Davie) and Coastal Carolina’s D.J. Rice (Davie) had one tackle apiece in the Mountaineers’ win over Coastal on Saturday.

* ASU will be televised

Saturday’s Division I-AA football quarterfinal between top-seeded Appalachian State and Montana State will be televised live nationally on ESPN2 beginning at 4 p.m. ASU (11-1) is ranked No. 1, while Montana State (8-4) is ranked 18th.

* N.C. Central phenom honored

N.C. Central junior Shari Matthews was selected the 2006 Division II Women’s Volleyball Player of the Year.

Matthews, an outside hitter from Barbados, led the nation with an average of 6.37 kills and broke the D-II record for kills in one season with 974.

* Area high school basketball

East Davidson’s girls basketball team beat always-strong Thomasville 60-51 on Saturday.

Sophomore center Anna Freeman scored 26 points for the CCC’s Golden Eagles. Secily Ray had 19 for the Bulldogs.

* CPC boys teams Mount Tabor and West Forsyth lost in tournament action. Mount Tabor fell to Durham Hillside 77-72 in overtime. Ryan Delapp scored 15 for the Spartans. Justin Griffith, a transfer from North Davidson, had 14.

West Forsyth’s Titans were blown out 87-45 by Kinston. Kyle Boardman led West with 14 points.
