The Livingstone men’s basketball team lost 77-73 in overtime at Bluefield State (W. Va.) on Tuesday.

Michael Duncan scored 24 points, including 18 free throws, for the Blue Bears (1-3). Chris Worley added 20 points. Ivan Jackson had 10.

Omar London led Bluefield State with 20 points.

Livingstone women win

Lina Brown and Jonta Moss scored 21 points apiece to lead the Livingstone women’s basketball team to an 82-79 win at Bluefield State on Tuesday.

Livingstone (1-1) also got 14 points from Clintoria Bryant.

The Blue Bears hit nine 3-pointers to make up for a 46-33 deficit on the glass.

Catawba athletics

Catawba’s Chris Wooldridge, a senior forward, averaged 17.5 points and 10.5 rebounds in his first two games and was named SAC Men’s Basketball Player of the Week.

* AP reported the Catawba women’s basketball team won at St. Augustine’s 71-53 on Tuesday, but no other information was available.

Pfeiffer athletics

DeMario Grier scored 31 points to lead Pfeiffer’s men’s basketball team to a 103-96 win over No. 19 Mount Olive on Tuesday in the Falcons’ CVAC opener.

Tavares Cooper scored 24 for the Falcons (2-0). Robert McGriff added 15 points and Logan Call 14.

Elijah Rouse had 25 points and 13 rebounds for the Trojans (2-1).

* Pfeiffer is offering free admission to Bobby Lutz Invitational Tournament basketball games this weekend and the Pfeiffer women’s game on Saturday.

Pfeiffer’s men play King College at 7 p.m. on Friday, following a Lees-McRae-UNC-Pembroke contest at 5.

Games on Saturday are Pfeiffer’s women vs. Converse at 1; the Lutz consolation game at 3; and the Lutz championship game at 5.

* Pfeiffer’s undefeated women’s basketball team routed CVAC foe Mount Olive 78-53 on Tuesday. Ashelle Athill led the Falcons (3-0) with 16 points.

* Pfeiffer’s Tamara Clay was named CVAC Player of the Week for women’s basketball. She scored 52 points in the Falcons’ first two games.

* Pfeiffer’s softball program has signed North Moore athletes Megan McNeill and Kristen Goins.

Rich, Schafer shine

Maggie Rich (East Rowan) scored 13 points and had five rebounds in Campbell’s 81-73 basketball win over UNC-Asheville on Tuesday.

* Allison Schafer (Davie County) scored 20 points and hit clutch free throws with four seconds left to lift Mars Hill to a 66-64 win at Johnson C. Smith.

Davie teams fall to Central

Davie County’s boys basketball team lost to Central Cabarrus 79-61 in the Davie Shootout championship game on Tuesday.

Davie (1-1) trailed by six at the half.

Drew Absher hit five 3-pointers and scored 25 points to lead the War Eagles.

“We played good, except for the start of the third quarter,” Davie coach Mike Absher said. “Central is an excellent team, and we stood in there toe-to-toe.”

Davie also lost to Central in the girls championship game.

Suggs to pitch for Pitt

Softball pitcher Heather Suggs will sign with Pitt Community College in Greenville on Monday.

Suggs, was a perennial all-county player at South Rowan, graduating in 2005. She attended East Carolina during the 2005-06 school year but did not play softball.

Suggs was offered a scholarship by Pitt coming out of high school and enrolled at Pitt to start the current school year. She’ll be on scholarship for the spring semester.

YFL Chargers

The Granite-Faith Chargers finished an undefeated YFL season with a 20-12 win over North Rowan in the Super Bowl.

Travis Abbitt rushed for 68 yards and scored a touchdown and two extra points.

Max Allen rushed for 73 yards behind strong line play. He scored two touchdowns, including a 65-yard kickoff return.

Michael Glenn and Dalton Moose made nine tackles each, while Tyler L’Hommedieu had six. Doc Corpening recovered a fumble.

GARS event

Thirty GARS members participated at McCanless Golf Club on Monday.

Larry Burger led ‘A’ players with a net of 67.27. Bob Gilland’s 69.72 net paced the ‘B’ players. Harold Hattaway led ‘C’ players with 70.50. Harold Caudill’s 74.56 led ‘D’ players.

Gilland was closest to pin on No. 9 and No. 15.

Middle schools

BASKETBALL (8th)

Erwin’s girls beat Knox 41-30. Lindsey Dunlap led the Eagles with 13 points. Mallory Drew had nine points, six steals and five assists. Kristen Hatley had eight rebounds.

Najwa Allison had 14 points for the Trojans.

* Knox’s boys beat Erwin 55-28 as Romar Morris scored 20 points. Darrien Rankin had 10, and Alex Weant had six.

Dakota Tilley led the Eagles with nine points.

* West Rowan Middle’s boys beat South Davie 38-25 to open the season.

B.J. Sherrill led the Bulldogs with 11 points. Montreal Steele had 10 points and 12 boards.

Denzel Redmon had 13 points and Kenyatta Brand 10 for South Davie.

* West’s girls topped South Davie 32-21. Ayanna Avery led the Bulldogs with 19 points, and Diamond Price paced the rebounding.

* China Grove’s boys beat Southeast 47-18. Nick Houston (10 points), Zack Wagner (nine) and Zack Gragg (eight) led the Red Devils.

* Southeast’s girls beat China Grove 37-16. Krista Swartz scored eight for China Grove. Stats weren’t available for Southeast.

WRESTLING

Erwin opened with a 72-24 win over Knox for its 22nd straight victory over county opponents. That’s a four-year streak. Erwin’s next match is at Corriher-Lipe on Monday.

Salisbury Academy hoops

Hannah Coulter’s 16 points and seven rebounds led Salisbury Academy to a 39-23 win over Covenant Christian. Carley Drye scored eight points.

*Salisbury Academy’s boys beat Covenant 38-28. Chad Hoskins (10 points) and Skip Wood (eight) led the Jaguars.

Sacred Heart hoops

Sacred Heart’s boys basketball team defeated Winston-Salem St. John’s 60-50.

James Kyger had 25 points and 12 rebounds and went 12-for-15 from the line. Roy Dixon scored 16 points. Phil Tonseth had 10 points and 10 rebounds. Kevin Robinson had 10 rebounds.

Angels ranked No. 1

Several local players are part of the Carolina Angels 13-under baseball team that finished the fall season ranked No. 1 in the nation in the USSSA point standings.

The Angels (21-5) played seven tournaments, winning four, finishing second twice and third once.

Coaches are Charlie Gray, Mike Smith and Chris Motsinger.

North Rowan Middle’s Patrick Snider is a right-handed pitcher, third baseman and outfielder on the team.

Angels Garrett Motsinger and Jason Smith are from Southeast Middle. Motsinger is a second baseman. Smith is a middle infielder.

Advance’s Matt Rembielak is a shortstop.

North Hills cross country

North Hills finished its cross country season with the conference meet.

The Eagles, led by Margaret Kaufmann, placed third. The team included Cacy Honeycutt, Laura Butner, Grace Fazia, Ruthann Thomas, Caley Boggs, Abby Hoben and Amanda Matlock.

The North Hills boys finished second overall. Cole Honeycutt placed first with a course record of 11:42. Adam Fessler placed fifth. The team included Conor Honeycutt, Gavin Bennett, Chase Taylor and Taylor Kriminger.

Rowan Alliance

The Rowan Alliance U-11 girls soccer team is looking for new players for this spring.

Turkey shoots

Turkey shoots will start on Nov. 25 from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. at the Faith Jaycee Ballpark. Cost is $3 a shot.

Prizes to choose from are five pounds of sausage, a slab of side meat or a canned ham. Country ham already sliced and wrapped will be shot for $5 a shot.
