The college football notebook ...
GREENSBORO— Boston College quarterback Chris Crane and North Carolina linebacker Bruce Carter earned weekly honors from the Atlantic Coast Conference on Monday.
Crane was named offensive back of the week after throwing for 428 yards and two scores while rushing for three touchdowns in the 38-31 win against North Carolina State. Carter was named specialist of the week after setting an ACC single-game record by blocking three punts in the 38-12 win over previously unbeaten Connecticut.
UNHAPPY TENNESSEE
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — Tennessee student Kristin Childrey just assumed she and her friends would attend every home football game last season. Now she says games aren't a priority anymore.
The average fan attendance at Neyland Stadium through the first three games was 97,194, which is a few thousand below capacity. It's down by nearly 4,000 people from what Tennessee (2-3) averaged through the first three games last season in a similar start.
Some of that is because of a sluggish economy and regional gas shortages.
But students are unhappy about having to pay for tickets for the first time.
LSU-FLORIDA
BATON ROUGE, La. — Ole Miss' upset win over Florida on the road has some believing the Gators are having problems on offense.
LSU coach Les Miles, however, is not one of those who hold that opinion.
"If you find any weaknesses, tell me," Miles said at his weekly media luncheon Monday. "They don't have any weaknesses. Being ranked (No. 11) is underselling them some. It will be our strengths against their strengths."
SMELLEY HONORED
COLUMBIA, S.C. — South Carolina fans weren't the only ones to appreciate the breakout performance of quarterback Chris Smelley. The Gamecock sophomore was picked Monday as the SEC's player of the week on offense.
