Livingstone offense batters Bowie State

BY STAFF REPORTS
SALISBURY POST

BOWIE, Md.-- Livingstone amassed 588 yards total offense and blitzed Bowie State 42-14 in a Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association college football game here Saturday.

The victory was the first in the CIAA for coach Greg Richardson's Livingstone club, which bounced back from last Saturday night's 24-6 loss to preseason league favorite Virginia Union. The Blue Bears are 1-1 in the league and 2-2 overall.

Bowie's Bulldogs also stand 1-1 in the CIAA and 2-2 overall.

Livingstone spotted the home team a 7-0 first-quarter lead before taking charge in the second period with four touchdowns for a 28-7 lead. Bowie cut the deficit to 28-14 at halftime.

The Blue Bears added two more TDs in the third quarter.

Running back Carlton Jones, quarterback D'andre Hopper and wide receiver Shannon Gainey each accounted for more than 100 yards for the winners.

Jones, the 1998 CIAA rushing champion, ran for 160 yards in 20 carries and scored three touchdowns on runs of 23, 24 and 13 yards.

Hopper had a 39-yard run for Livingstone's first TD, then added two passes for scores. He had 275 yards total offense-- 135 on the ground in 15 carries and 140 through the air.

Gainey caught two passes, both for touchdowns on throws of 64 and 33 yards from Hopper. Gainey had 168 all-purpose yards, including 51 on three kick returns.

The Bulldogs took their 7-0 lead in the first period on Ray Hawkins' 60-yard punt return and James Mertz' extra-point conversion.

Hopper's 39-yard run early in the second period and Keith Roberts' conversion tied the score at 7-all.

Jones then had 23- and 24-yard TD runs in a span of less than three minutes. Two extra-point kicks by Jim Terry gave the visitors a 21-7 lead.

Hopper and Gainey teamed up for their 64-yard TD pass with 4:08 left in the third quarter. It was the third Bears TD in a span of 5:29. Terry kicked the extra point, and it was 28-7.

Bowie got back on the scoreboard late in the first half on a 10-yard pass from Jim Whitehead to Michael Bryant. Mertz kicked the extra point to pull the Bulldogs within 28-14.

Gainey's 33-yard TD pass from Hopper and Jones' 13-yard scoring run plus two Terry conversions completed the Bears' scoring in the third period.

Livingstone's strong defense allowed 336 total yards, most of it on the passing of Whitehead, who was 16-for-44 for 237 yards.

The Bears, however, picked off four of Whitehead's passes. Defensive back Tornell Jones led the way with two interceptions, while defensive backs Devie King and Tramond Cobb each got one.

Lineman Ronnie Washburn led the winners in tackles with six, including one sack. Lineman Demetrius Rudolph also had a sack.

Livingstone will be back in action at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at home against Virginia State at Alumni Stadium.
