Pros play for big money in Kannapolis

The Kannapolis Country Club’s annual men’s pro-am tournament on Wednesday will have a $10,000 purse, one of the biggest in the Carolinas.

The field of 32 PGA teaching pros will include head pro Allen Cress and director of golf Jeff Austin of Kannapolis.

Other local head pros will be Toby Lawson of the Country Club of Salisbury; Bo Bowden of Crescent Golf Club; and Brian Lee of Warrior Golf Club. Bob Timm, formerly head pro at McCanless Golf Club and now with Carolina Golf Mart, will also play.

Other area pros include Lance Reid of Stanly County Country Club; David Ross and assistant Ted Humberger of Cabarrus Country Club; and Jim Clodfelter of Mocksville’s Hickory Hills Country Club.

Mike Taylor of Gaston Country Club is the defending champion in the pro division. He shot a 4-under-par 68 last year.

Each pro will play with three amateur partners. The tourney has an 11 a.m. shotgun start.

BUSY AT CRESCENT: Crescent Golf Club will be busy during October and November with at least eight tournaments on the schedule.

The 24th annual Civitan Golf Classic will be played at 8 a.m. Saturday. Entries ($40 fee) are due Monday for the captain’s-choice event. A new car will be the prize for hole in ones on designated holes, courtesy of Brad Farrah Pontiac-GMC-Nissan and Salisbury Motor Co. Proceeds will benefit Rowan individuals with developmental disabilities. For more information, call Charlie Graeber (633-2033) or E.D. Cook (633-5071).

The Crescent Golfers Club Association will hold a two-man best ball event next Sunday and a member-guest tourney on Sunday Oct. 24. The entry fee for both tourneys is $35.

The second annual Scott SmithMemorial Scholarship Tournament will be played at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 9. The Men’s Group of St. John’s Lutheran Church sponsors the tourney, which benefits needy youth of Rowan County. The entry fee is $45 per person. Hole-in-one prizes will be sponsored by Salisbury Motor Co. Entry forms may be turned in at St. John’s.

The Knox Middle School Golf Tournament will be played at 2 p.m. Sunday,Oct. 10. Entry forms and the $45 fee for the captain’s-choice event can be turned in to Scott Treadway, 108 O’Hara Dr., Salisbury, by this Friday. For more information, call Treadway at 639-1952 (home) or 633-2922 (work).

The Crescent Men’s Golf Association will hold its 36-hole club championship Saturday, Oct. 16, and Sunday, Oct. 17. The entry fee is $70.

The club’s second annual Halloween Two-Man will be held Saturday, Oct. 30. The entry fee is $150 per team with the first 68 teams being accepted.Corey Basinger and Jerry Smith are defending champions in the tourney which has an unusual 27-hole format. Teams will play nine holes of best ball, nine holes of captain’s-choice and nine holes of modified alternate shot.

After the first 18 holes, prizes will be awarded to the top teams, then teams will be flighted for the final nine holes. Winners will be determined using a combination of all three scores.

The team that leads after the first 18 holes will receive $200 in gift certificates, if the tourney has a full field. Prizes will be awarded to second through 16th place. First place in each flight for the full 27 holes will also be worth a $200 gift certificate.

The Crescent Golfers Club Association will wind up the season with its Turkey Day Tournament on Saturday, Nov. 20. The entry fee is $40.

CORBIN EVENT: Corbin Hills Golf Club’s annual club championship will be held next Saturday and Sunday, beginning at 10 a.m. Saturday. The second round will start at 1:30 p.m. Sunday.

Regular and senior divisions will be held in the Corbin Hills Men’s Golf Association event.

MEMBER’S DAY: McCanless Golf Club plans a member’s appreciation day on Friday. There will be no cart fees for members plus free pizza at lunch.

McCanless will then holds its 36-hole stroke play club championship on Saturday and Sunday.Men’s, women’s and senior divisions will be held. The number of entries will determine flights.

Golfers should register by Thursday. The entry fee is $15.

The Carlton Jackson Sr. Memorial Tournament will be held Oct. 23-24 and 30-31. It will be a four-ball match play event. Golfers will be flighted after qualifying rounds scheduled Oct. 11-21.

The entry fee is $20 for members and $40 for non-members.

ACES: Two hole in ones have been made at Kannapolis Country Club recently.

Terry Young used an 8-iron to ace the par-3, 147-yard 11th hole. He was playing with Jerry Spry and Dan McDaniels.

Bruce Jacobs aced the same hole with a 9-iron from 130 yards. His ace was witnessed by Jeff Jacobs and Jeff Buakal.

ROCKY RIVER AWARD: O’Dell & Associates, architects of the clubhouse at Rocky River Golf Club in Concord, have received a prestigious award for their design of the beautiful 10,400-square foot facility.

The Charlotte chapter of the American Institute of Architects bestowed its coveted Honor Award to O’Dell & Associates during a recent ceremony at the Mint Museum in Charlotte. Architect John Walters accepted the award on behalf of O’Dell and the club.

Barry Embler of Signet Golf Associates, which operates the club, said the clubhouse “reminds me of one of the old, original clubhouses you used to see in the early 1900s. It has a lot of that character.”

FALCONS SEVENTH: Pfeiffer University finished in a tie for seventh in a strong field of 20 teams in the Johnny Palmer/Old North State Invitational last week.

Barton won with a score of 586, followed by North Carolina at 592.

Pfeiffer, which finished at 609, was led by Ben Case, who tied for 13th with a 148 total.

The individual winner by three strokes was Barton’s Ben Bridgers with a 140 at the Old North State Club at Uwharrie Point.
