died Sunday (Sept. 19, 1999) at the center.
Born Feb. 22, 1943, in Rowan County, Mrs. Myers
was a daughter of the late Donald C. and Margaret E. Shipp Brotherton. A graduate of J.C.
Price High School, she was a former legal secretary and of the AME Zion faith.

Arvester Colbert Smith
The funeral will be Friday for Arvester Allene
Colbert Smith, 89, Autumn Care of Salisbury, who died Sunday (Sept. 19, 1999) at the
nursing center after several years of declining health.
Born Dec. 17, 1909, in Rowan County,Mrs. Smith was
the daughter of Viola Colbert Fisher, Cleveland. She was a graduate of J.C. Price High
School. Retired, she was employed by the Salisbury Holiday Inn in housekeeping. She was a
Jehovahs Witness.
Her husband, James William Smith, died in 1945.
Survivors, in addition to her mother, include sons
Bobby M. Smith and Leroy Colbert, both of Salisbury; brothers William Fisher, Cleveland,
and Booker T. Fisher, Charlotte; sister Emma Lewis, Cleveland; eight grandchildren; 21
great-grandchildren; and 18 great-great-grandchildren.

Katie Lou Cowan Garner
STATESVILLE Katie Lou Mama
Katie Cowan Garner, 85, 175 Hezekiah Lane, died Sunday (Sept. 18, 1999) at Iredell
Memorial Hospital after an extended illness.
Born Sept. 30, 1914, in Rowan County, Mrs. Garner
was a daughter of the late John Graham and Bertha Ellis Cowan and stepdaughter of
FrankCowan. Educated in the Rowan County schools, she joined Cedar Grove AME Zion Church
at an early age.She later joined Cameron Presbyterian Church, where she was active on
various committees.
Her husband of 65 years, Hezekiah Garner, whom she
married Sept 25, 1930, died in October 1995. Five children, Howard Garner, Willie Lucille
Sherrill, John William Garner, Thelma Garner Mills and Ivory L. Garner, also preceded her
in death.
Survivors include son Norman H. Garner,
Statesville; daughters DorothyG. Sloan, Frances G. Wilson, Bettie G. Evans, and Bertha G.
Davidson, all of Statesville; brothers Monroe L. Cowan,Salisbury, and Jack Cowan,
Philadelphia,Pa.; sister Louise Cowan, Philadelphia, Pa.; 29 grandchildren, including
Calvin Sherrill, who was reared in the home, and DarrylDavidson, who she assisted in
rearing; 43 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.

for Geneva Mae Davis Gilbert, 78, Five Oaks Nursing Home, formerly of Brown Road, who died

Born June 29, 1921, in Stanly County, Mrs. Gilbert
was a daughter of the late H.T. and Nealie Griffin Davis. A graduate of China Grove High
School, she was a homemaker and member of Corriher Heights Baptist Church.
Her husband, Rastus Gilbert, died Dec. 2, 1987.

Born June 9, 1918, in Alexander County, Mrs. Lisk
was a daughter of the late Jonas F. and Nancy Elizabeth Mayberry Johnson. Retied from
Cannon Mills sewing room after 34 years, she was a member of Franklin Heights Baptist
Church.
Her husband, Rayvon Arnold Lisk, preceded her in
death.

The funeral will be Thursday for Clarence Edward
BuckLoflin, 79, Salisbury, who died Tuesday (Sept. 21, 1999) at Rowan Regional
Medical Center after two years of declining health.
Born March 15, 1920, in Rowan County, Mr. Loflin,
a son of the late Jack and Beulah Davis Loflin, was educated in the Salisbury city
schools. A veteran of the U.S. Navy, he received the Bronze Star and World War II Victory
Medal for his service in World War II. He retired in 1972 from Cartex Mill and in 1997
from Rowan-Cabarrus Community College. He was a member of North Main Baptist Church.
His wife, Grace Grubb Loflin, died July 21, 1985.

Salisbury, Clyde Loflin,Rockwell, and Jack LoflinJr., Spencer.

Martin was a son of Carrie Foil Martin, Concord, and the late Oliver Martin. He formerly
owned and operated Martins Battery Salvage, Kannapolis, for 16 years. He later
worked for Terminal Trucking Co., Concord, for 13 years.

at her home after 2 1/2 years of declining health and six weeks of serious illness.
Born Oct. 10, 1911, in Spencer, Mrs. Myers was a
daughter of the late Bert A. and Sallie Dulin Eakins. She attended Sacred Heart Catholic
School and Spencer High School. A homemaker, she was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic
Church.
Her husband, Robert L. Myers, died Oct. 25, 1966,
and a daughter, Rosalie Myers Young, died Dec. 1, 1995.
