will be Monday for Joseph Daniel Lockhart, 12, and his brother, Brandon James Lockhart,
10, Salisbury, who died from injuries sustained in an automobile accident.
Joseph Lockhart died Thursday (Sept. 16, 1999) at
Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center, Winston-Salem.
Brandon Lockhart died Wednesday (Sept. 15, 1999)
at Rowan Regional Medical Center.
Joseph Lockhart was a seventh-grade student at
North Rowan Middle School.
Brandon Lockhart was a fourth-grade student at
North Rowan Elementary School.
Both boys were members of Trindale Baptist Church,
Archdale, and Cub Scout Pack 349, sponsored by Central United Methodist Church, Spencer.
Survivors include their mother, Marsha Ann Nelson
Lockhart and her fiance, Mark Earnhardt,of the home, and their father, Robert Whiston
Lockhart Jr. and their stepmother Anita Lockhart of High Point; maternal grandmother Judy
Nelson, Salisbury; paternal grandparents Bill and Betty Steadman,Trinity; maternal
great-grandmother Roberta Bailey,Salisbury; paternal great-grandmother Notre Lockhart,
High Point; and stepsisters Kristen and Shawna Covey, both of Manchester, N.H., and Olivia

(Sept. 17, 1999) at Genesis Eldercare Center, Salisbury.

Alfred Fowler
KANNAPOLIS - James Alfred Fowler, 71, 118 Arlene
Ave. died Thursday (Sept. 16, 1999) at Transitional Health Services of Kannapolis.
Born May 19, 1928, in Franklin County, Ga., Mr.
Fowler was a son of the late Estie Jordan and William Lee Fowler. He had retired several
years ago from the No. 6 weave room at Cannon Mills, Plant 1. He was a member of Jackson
Park Pentecostal Holiness Church.
Survivors include wife Gladys Rhodes Fowler; sons
James Ronald Fowler, Kannapolis, and Dennis Lee Fowler, Lexington; sisters Fannie Lou
Carter, Allene Smith and Venetia Steele, all of Kannapolis, Irelle Wilkinson, Mooresville,

Reavis Bernhardt, 85, 410 Mount Moriah Church Road, died Thursday (Sept. 16, 1999) at The
Laurels in Salisbury.
Born Nov. 16, 1913, in Cabarrus County, Mrs.
Bernhardt was a daughter of the late John Henry and Hattie Allen Reavis. Educated in the
Rowan County schools, she was a homemaker and a member of Trinity Lutheran Church.
Her husband, Myron Leo Bernhardt, died May 24,
1977.
Survivors include sons Walter Bernhardt,
Salisbury, and Johnny Bernhardt, Stuttgart, Ark.; daughter Mrs. Gene (Shirley)Rumple,
Cleveland; sister Mrs. Robert (Eveline)Troutman, Salisbury; nine grandchildren; and 10
great-grandchildren.

KANNAPOLIS Marvin Eddy Burris, 57, 2241
Canterbury Drive, died Friday (Sept. 17, 1999) at NorthEast Medical Center, Concord, after
a week of serious illness.
Born Nov. 16, 1941, in Cabarrus County, Mr. Burris
was a son of the late E.K. and Katie Virginia Plott Burris. He was employed with NorthEast
Medical Center for 37 years.
A U.S. Army veteran, he was a member of Bethpage
United Methodist Church. Army, he served in 1966-1967.
Survivors include wife Betty Graham Burris; sons
Robert Edward Burris, Rockwell, and William Alan Burris, Kannapolis; brothers Roy Burris,
New Bern, and Jerry Burris, Kannapolis; and one grandchild.

Millie Redfern Goodman
ALBEMARLE The funeral will be Sunday for
Millie Redfern Goodman, 85, 308 N. Fifth St., who died Wednesday (Sept. 15, 1999).
Born Feb. 19, 1914, in Union County, Mrs. Goodman
was a daughter of the late Rupert and Judy Mae Hendley Redfern. She was a homemaker.
A member of First Baptist Church, New London, she
was a Sunday school teacher and pianist for the children. She was also active in the
Foreign Missionary Society.
Survivors include husband Gus Goodman; sons
William R. Goodman, Omaha, Neb., and Robert Wayne Goodman, Arlington, Va.; daughter
Christine Miller, New London; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Agnes Taylor James
ALBEMARLE Born July 18, 1909, in Montgomery
County, Mrs. James was a daughter of the late Charles Lee and Cora Hall Taylor. Educated
at New London High School and Womans College, she retired from James Clothing Store.
She was a member of First Baptist Church, where
she taught Sunday school for many years, was a former president of her Sunday school class
and circle, and a member of WMU and the Bereavement committee. She was coordinator for
Meals on Wheels and served on the board of directors.
In 1947, she and her late husband, Frampton Albert
James, opened James Clothing. The company remains in business after over 30 years.
While in business, she was active in civic affairs
such as the Merchants Association, Albemarle ImprovementCommission and Stanly County
Community Colleges Advisory committee for Fashion Merchandising and Marketing.
She was a member of Dogwood Garden Club and
Albemarle Womens Club, where she was honored as Club Woman of the Year in 1982. She
was also an active member of the Stanly County Chapter of the American War Mothers, where
she served as president for four years, and the Stanly County Historical Association.
Her husband died Oct. 21, 1991.
Survivors include son Dr. Charles M. James,
Richmond, Va.; sister Mary Margorie MargieTaylor, Albemarle; and three
grandchildren.

Margaret Ludwick Maness
ROCKWELL Margaret Ellen Ludwick Maness, 87,
1085 Misenheimer Road, died Friday (Sept. 17, 1999) at the home of a daughter, Mrs. Otis
(Roberta)Ragan, Granite Quarry.
Born Aug. 13, 1912, in Rowan County, Mrs. Maness
was a daughter of the late Rufus Richard and Bertha Elizabeth Johnson Ludwick. Educated in
the Rowan and Davidson county schools, she formerly worked at Erwin Mill, Cooleemee.
Also a homemaker, she was a member of Solid Rock
Baptist Church.
She was preceded in death by her first husband,
Jasper Clay Honeycutt, who died in 1950; her second husband, Quincy Adam Maness, who died
in 1979; and sons Charles Edward and Thomas Clay Honeycutt.
Survivors, in addition to her daughter, include
son David Richard Honeycutt, Rockwell; two other daughters, Mrs. Cody (Nolie)Myers,
Kannapolis, and Mrs. Claude (Violet)Eagle, Clemmons; 10 grandchildren; 11
great-grandchildren; and five step-great-great-grandchildren.

Mildred Newell
CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. The funeral is today for
Mildred Lomax Cress Newell, 78, Chattanooga, who died Wednesday (Sept. 15, 1999) at her
home.
Born in Spencer, N.C., Mrs. Cress was a daughter
of Eula Mae Lomax, Salisbury, N.C., and the late Robert L. Lomax. She had been a member of
Spencer First Baptist Church and was currently a member of Brainerd Baptist Church. She
was also a former member of the Eastern Star.
She was preceded in death by her first husband,
James R. Cress.
Survivors include husband Oscar Newell; son James
R. Cress Jr., Lumbard, Ill.; stepsons David B. Newell, Willis, Texas, and Stephen R.
Newell, Las Vegas; stepdaughter Diane E. Newell, Indian Rocks, Fla.; sister Louise L.
OBrien, Norfolk, Va.; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Jean P. Sigmon
Jean P. Sigmon, 66, 1204 N. Walnut St., died
Thursday (Sept. 16, 1999) at her home after four months of serious illness.
Born June 11, 1933, in Kannapolis, Mrs. Sigmon was
a daughter of the late Ida Hill and Willie Jerome Peebles. She was a homemaker and a
member of the North Kannapolis Baptist Church.
Her husband, James Frank Sigmon, died in 1993.
Survivors include daughter Mika Williams,
Kannapolis; and sisters MaryPeebles Allman, Charlotte, and Billie Peebles Hill, Atlantic
Beach.
