Upscale liquor store planned in Kannapolis

BY JESSIE BURCHETTE
SALISBURY POST

The Rowan Alcohol Beverage Control Board will open bids next week for construction of a new liquor store in Kannapolis.

The store will be significantly larger than the current store on Cannon Boulevard.

Linda Lowman, general manager for the county board, said the store will combine the current China Grove and Kannapolis stores. The new store is expected to open early next year.

The new store will rise directly across the highway from the current location at 1903 N. Cannon Blvd. In March, the ABC Board bought seventh-tenths of an acre from Howard V. Wyrick of Kannapolis for $60,000.

The new store will be identical to the ABC store on Jake Alexander Boulevard built in 1995. That store was designed by Salisbury architect Robert Stone.

Lowman said there is no cost estimate on the new store. ABC officials are hoping for competitive bids and a good price.

In 1995, the total cost of the Jake Alexander Boulevard store was around $225,000. The new store will consist of a 3,500 square foot building, plus a loading dock with surrounding parking. Spaces include a large sales area, warehouse, office, and toilets.

Construction will consist of concrete slab on grade and brick and block exterior walls.

ABC officials will open bids on Sept. 28, a Tuesday, at 3:30 p.m. at the ABC warehouse at 510 N. Lee St. in Salisbury.

The ABC board decided to merge the China Grove and Kannapolis store as an economy move.

One of the county’s top volume stores, the Kannapolis store already needed additional space. The current ABC store is one of three occupants of a building that shares limited parking spaces.

The display and customer area of the new store will be much larger than the current store, according to Lowman.

With the merger of the two stores, the Rowan ABC board will operate five stores: two in Salisbury, located on Jake Alexander Boulevard and the Ketner Center on West Innes Street, and stores in Spencer and Rockwell.
