A fall tradition
Churches, community groups gear up for annual bazaars

BY KATHY CHAFFIN
SALISBURY POST

You wouldn’t want to use the flyswatters Jerri Seaboch made for the upcoming bazaar at Thyatira Presbyterian Church at Mill Bridge to swat flies.

They’re not to spank children either, Seaboch says. The flyswatters are covered with needlepoint renderings of the historic church, which dates back to the 1700s.

Sewn on plastic canvas, the embroidered backgrounds vary from season to season and sunny to cloudy skies, but the church is the same on all of them.

Seaboch made 20 of the flyswatter covers for the bazaar, scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 9, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Another rendering of the church will be available for sale in the form of prints of a watercolor painting done a few years ago by member Frank Fuller. The prints depict a snow scene of the church in its early years.

Three of Fuller’s original watercolors, already matted, will also be for sale.

The Women of the Church hold the bazaar in conjunction with a barbecued chicken dinner and yard sale every other year to raise money. “The ladies get together and decide what to do with the money,” says Nell Fuller, bazaar chairperson and wife of Frank.

In years past, the money has either been donated to foreign missions or church projects. The women decided last year to donate $2,000 for round tables for the fellowship hall, but Fuller says they haven’t bought them yet.

The bazaar will be held in the fellowship hall, located directly behind the sanctuary. Worship services are being held in there, as well, until extensive renovations to the sanctuary are completed.

The yard sale is planned for outside, but will be moved inside in the event of rain. The barbecued chicken, for which tickets are $6, will be cooked outside and served inside.

Ham and sausage biscuits will be available that morning, and hot dogs will also be sold at lunch.. Baked and canned goods prepared by church members will be included in the bazaar.

Members have been working for several months to prepare crafts. Fuller, along with Mary Deal, Pauline Neal, Rachel McCorkle, Dana Milam, Alice Sloop and Bea Litaker, got together on Tuesday mornings during the winter and spring to stitch five quilts for the bazaar.

“Our quilts are the biggest moneymakers,” says Katheryn Hall. The five, full-sized quilts for sale this year will start at around $250.

One of them is made from a vintage quilt top believed to have been pieced together by Pauline Neal’s mother. “She found it in her mother’s things,” Fuller says. “We wouldn’t sell that to anybody for a quilt to throw on the bed every day. It’s probably not strong enough.”

A baby quilt will also be sold at the bazaar.

Among other crafts that will be available are several cloth wall hangings made by Mary Deal. “Life is a Miracle, Count Every Hare,” says one with a rabbit on it; and “Blessed are the Purr in Heart” says another with a cat.

Deal’s wall hangings include an intricate nativity scene, as well as a wool hanging with various animal shapes on quilt-sized squares.

An angel pillow and cats, pigs, dogs, rabbits, fish and camels made out of different kinds of material were also made by Deal.

Something new for this year’s bazaar are two drawstring pillow pads which fold out for picnics or for babies to play on. The pads have pockets which can hold utensils and plates for picnics or baby supplies, depending on the use.

“I saw it in a book and got the pattern and did it,” Deal says.

One of the pads looks like a pinwheel with cookie cutter animals on each pie-shaped piece of material, while the other is made of bright green and matching floral material.

Nell Fuller made quillows, which are small quilts that fold up into a pocket and make a pillow.

She also made crocheted snow people and poinsettias from red and green felt and bottle caps.

Because they always have a lot of Christmas ornaments for sale, Deal says they put up a tree so they can display them on it during the bazaar.

Among the ornaments that will be hanging on the tree this year are bells made out of used communion glasses.

Jerri Seaboch saw one at a craft show and tried to make some similar to it. She used beads and bead thread to make the bells.

Thyatira had just switched from using glass communion cups to plastic, disposable ones when Seaboch asked the elders if she could have the used ones.

“I’ve shown them to several people working with the bazaar,” she says, “and they thought it was a neat idea. They had not seen them before.”
