Rain wreaks havoc on Labor Day golf tournament

BY ED DUPREE
SALISBURY POST

Eight championship flight teams will be busy today in the rain-delayed Goode Crowder Dorsett Labor Day Four-Ball Invitational golf tourney.

Those eight teams, which include only three golfers who have ever won the tournament, did not play Sunday afternoon because of heavy rain caused by tropical storm Dennis.

They’ll play instead at 8:30 a.m. today in the quarterfinals at the Country Club of Salisbury, then the winners will face off at 1:30 p.m. in the semifinals.

The two teams that win two matches today will then meet in the finals the following weekend, probably on Saturday.

Gary Miller, Christopher McCoy and Charlie Graeber are the three golfers who have won a tournament championship, but at least one of those men will be eliminated today.

That’s because Miller, a two-time winner (1981, 1992), will team up with Todd Johnson in the quarterfinals against 1994 champion McCoy and his partner, John Murphy.

Miller won for the first time with David Bogedain 18 years ago, then came back to triumph with Dusty Holder in 1992. Miller has reached the finals two other times with Rick Houston and Dusty Holder as partners.

McCoy won his championship with Frederick Corriher in 1994.

Graeber played with Joey Rusher on the 1995 championship team and also lost in the 1988 finals with Brad Mickle. This time Graeber is playing with Randy Jarrett. They’ll take on last year’s runners-up, Thad Sprinkle and Joey Boley, this morning.

Other quarterfinal matches include medalists Todd Lawson and Steven Harvey against the father-son team of George and Shane Benfield, and Curtis Thomas and Roger Lyerly against Bob Honeycutt and Steve Honeycutt.

Results can be found on Scoreboard, Page 2D of the Salisbury Post.
