Essie Lee Rice Barton
EAST SPENCER The funeral will be Saturday
for Essie Lee Rice Barton, 79, formerly of East Winds Apartments, who died Thursday (Sept.
2, 1999) at Brian Center Health and Rehabilitation, Salisbury, after five years of
declining health and several weeks of serious illness.
Born June 7, 1920, in Seneca, S.C., Mrs. Barton
was a daughter of the late Andrew and Orena Hicks Rice. Educated in the Seneca public
schools, she had retired from Salisbury Manufacturing Co. She was a member of East Winds
Senior Citizens and New Hope AME Zion
Church, where she served on the Usher Board, the Lay Council and the Deaconess Board.
Survivors include sons Ernest O. Rice, Jamaica,
N.Y., and Charles R. Barton, Greenville, S.C.; daughter Ruby B. Holt, Salisbury; sisters
Eloise R. Kirksey, Bloomfield, Conn., and Annie L. Rosemond, Pickens, S.C.; 10
grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
Services: 2 p.m. Saturday, New Hope AME Zion Church, conducted by the Rev. Retoy Gaston. Burial,
church cemetery.
Visitation: 1:30 p.m. Saturday at the church.

Margaret Wilhelm Deal
CHINA GROVE Margaret Wilhelm Deal, 79, 1895
N. Main St., died Thursday (Sept. 2, 1999) at Genesis ElderCare, Salisbury.
Born Feb. 10, 1920, in Rowan County, Mrs. Deal was a daughter of the late Hugh Blair and Margie Fultz
Wilhelm. Educated in the Rowan County schools, she was a homemaker and a member of Gospel
Light Baptist Church, Salisbury.
Her husband, Oscar Alexander Bill
Deal, died Oct. 7, 1995.
Survivors include son Melvin B. Deal, Salisbury;
daughters Brenda D. Oxendine, China Grove, Kathy Denise Taylor, Tyro, and Kim D. Cameron,
Salisbury; sisters Bertie W. Mason, Salisbury, and Sue W. Hubbard and Joan Wilhelm, both
of China Grove; seven grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Services: 2 p.m. Saturday, Gospel Light Baptist Church, Salisbury, conducted by the Rev. Ron
Bankson, the Rev. Jerry Whiteheart and the Rev. Terry Cruse. Entombment, West Lawn
Mausoleum.
Visitation: 7-8:30 p.m. Friday, Linn-Honeycutt
Funeral Home, China Grove. At other times the family will be at the home on South Main
Street.
Twilia Eleanor Rice Butts
ALBEMARLE Twilia Eleanor Rice Butts, 85,
33426 Old Salisbury Road, died Wednesday (Sept. 1, 1999) at Britthaven of Piedmont Nursing
Center.
Born July 31, 1914, in Beaver County, Pa., Mrs.
Butts was a daughter of Elder C. and Violet Ganz Rice. Retired as a librarian with W.B.
Hibbs, Washington, D.C., she attended First Assembly Church.
Her husband, Roger C. Butts, died Dec. 5, 1998.
Survivors include son Kirk Allen Ebaugh, Ambridge,
Pa.; daughter Karen Ash, Albemarle; stepson Roger Butts Jr., Rockville, Md.; daughter
Karen Ash, Albemarle; stepdaughter Joan Constance Hegel, Brigantine, N.J.; six
grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at a later date.

Max H. Beaver
LEXINGTON Max Hal Beaver, 76, Yadkin
College community, died Wednesday (Sept. 1, 1999) at Wake Forest University Baptist
Medical Center, Winston-Salem.
Born Oct. 29, 1922, in Cabarrus County, Mr. Beaver
was a son of the late W.M. and Ellen Willeford Beaver. Retired from ARA Vending of
Greensboro, he serviced PPG Industries.
He was a charter member of Yadkin College Baptist
Church, where he taught the adult Sunday school class and was choir leader. A World War II
veteran of the U.S. Army, he was a member of American Legion Post 162.
Survivors include wife Minnie Dolly
Michael Beaver; daughter Betty Surratt, Lexington; sons Max Hal Beaver Jr., Lexington, and
Rickie Lynn Beaver, Welcome; sisters Faith Knowles, Bertie Sides and Mildred Berry, all of
China Grove; brother Nolan Beaver, Kannapolis; nine grandchildren; and 14
great-grandchildren.
Services: 4 p.m. Saturday, Yadkin College Baptist
Church, conducted by the Rev. Henry Thompson and the Rev. Earl Cook. Burial, Forest Hill
Park Mausoleum. Military rites by Randolph County Honor Guard.

Ruth Witherspoon Sain
KANNAPOLIS Ruth Witherspoon Sain, 88, 1507
Oak Shade Ave., died Thursday (Sept. 2, 1999) at Concord Nursing Center, Concord.
Born March 13, 1911, in Catawba County, Mrs. Sain
was a daughter of the late John Calvin and Lockie Jane Burris Witherspoon. Educated in the
Catawba County schools, she had retired after 50 years in the Cannon Mills sample room.
She was a member of Midway Methodist Church.
Her husband, Andrew Leo Sain, died in 1969.
Survivors include son Ralph A. Sain, China Grove;
brother Wilford Bill Witherspoon, Kannapolis; sister Leathie Chandler, Lenoir;
three grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Dora McIntyre Hunter
KANNAPOLIS Dora McIntyre Hunter, 81,
Kannapolis, died Thursday (Sept. 2, 1999) at the Brian Center.
Born Feb. 2, 1918, in Chesterfield County, S.C.,
Mrs. Hunter was the daughter of the late Will and Elizabeth Grooms McIntyre. She had
retired due to ill health from Cannon Mills, Plant 7, twister room, in 1973 after 20 years
with the company. She was a member of Faith Freewill Baptist Church.
Her husband, Francis M. Hunter, preceded her in
death.
Survivors include daughters Joan Drye, Concord,
and Frances Smith, Margaret Childress and Mary Ann Crisco, all of Kannapolis; sons William
P. and Raymond F. Hunter, both of Kannapolis, Robert L. Hunter, Virginia Beach, Va., and
John D. Hunter, Salisbury; brothers Willie and J.B. McIntyre, both of Chesterfield, S.C.;
sister Nettie Hunter, Kannapolis; 21 grandchildren; and 27 great-grandchildren.

Old Beatty Ford Road, died Thursday (Sept. 2, 1999) at her home.
Born May 17, 1923, in Landis, Mrs. Owens was a
daughter of the late Crawford and Willie Mae Beaver Thomas. A graduate of Landis High
School and a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, she had retired from Cannon Mills, where
she had worked as a weaver for 45 years.
Her husband, James L. Owens, died Nov. 12, 1983.
Survivors include sons James Owens Jr., Gwinn,
Mich., Michael Owens, Cooleemee, and William Owens, Landis; daughter Melissa Owens Hudson,
China Grove; brothers Emanuel Avner Thomas, Neptune Beach, Fla., Haylden Aldeen Thomas,
Lexington, and Grady Eugene Thomas, Kannapolis; sisters Lois Thomas Perkins, Landis, Zelia
Arlene Schaefermeyer, Desoto, Mo., and Nancy Thomas Kneeberg, Midland; 10 grandchildren;
