James Brooks HoxieJames Brooks
Hoxie, 46, of Salisbury and Charlotte, died Tuesday (Aug. 31, 1999) at Carolinas Medical
Center, Charlotte.
Born Jan. 14, 1953, Mr. Hoxie was a son of Albert
T. and Anne Wilkes Hoxie of Charlotte. He attended the Charlotte schools and graduated
from Myers Park High School, Charlotte. He also attended the Citadel in Charleston, S.C.,
and received a degree in industrial relations from the University of North Carolina at
Chapel Hill. He worked for Wall Industries, Spencer, for many years.
Survivors, in addition to his parents, include
sister Ruth Anne Hoxie, Raleigh; and brothers Michael B. and Scott Lee Hoxie, both of
Charlotte.
Services: Memorial, 2 p.m. Friday, Hankins & Whittington Funeral Service, Dilworth Chapel, Charlotte,
conducted by Dr. Charles D. Page.
Visitation: 2-9 today at the Hoxie home on

Myrtie Carter Crook
BADIN The funeral will be Thursday for
Myrtie Rejina Carter Crook, 92, 120 Pine St., who died Wednesday (Sept. 1, 1999) at Stanly
Memorial Hospital, Albemarle.
Born March 21, 1907, in Rowan County, Mrs. Crook
was a daughter of the late Louranzo Dow and Annie Levina Poole Carter. She was a retired
homemaker.
Her husband, Ernest Delma Crook, preceded her in
death.
Survivors include sons Hubert and Tommy Crook,
both of the home; daughter Mrs. Joe (Aleene Crook) Hicks, Badin; sister Alice Vanhoy,
Salisbury; stepbrother Albert Trexlar, Newport News, Va.; two grandchildren; four
great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

Clarence T. Davis
KANNAPOLIS The funeral will be Saturday for
Clarence T. Davis, 92, 1003 Lane St., who died Tuesday (Aug. 31, 1999) at his home after
three weeks of serious illness.
Born Oct. 1, 1906, in Rutherford County, Mr. Davis
was a son of the late Walter Jackson and Lana Gregg Davis. He was valedictorian of the
1928 graduating class of Cannon High School. From 1928 to 1978, he was assistant
purchasing agent for Cannon Mills.
A member of Trinity United Methodist Church since
1928, he was a member of the W.J. Bullock Sunday School Class. He was instrumental in
purchasing supplies and getting materials donated to build the current church in 1955. He
was a former member of the Kannapolis Rotary Club, the Lions Club and the Ys
Mens Club.
His wife, Martha Belk Davis, died Dec. 4, 1997.
Survivors include daughter Carolyn Manier, of the
home; three grandchildren; and one great-grandson.
Services: 2 p.m. Saturday, Trinity United
Methodist Church, conducted by the Rev. Don Shuman and Sarah Weaver. Burial, Carolina
Memorial Park Mausoleum.

James Clayton Dixon
KANNAPOLIS The funeral will be Friday for
James Clayton Dixon, 1507 Buffalo St., who died Tuesday (Aug. 31, 1999) at NorthEast
Medical Center, Concord, after nine weeks of illness.
Born Jan. 14, 1929, in Darlington County, S.C.,
Mr. Dixon was a son of the late Cord and Alice Odom Dixon. He had retired in 1991 as
construction supervisor for Porter-Hayden Co., Charlotte. He had earlier worked at Cannon
Mills, Plant 4, cloth room, for 17 years.
His wife, Annie Mae Gainey Dixon, died Feb. 12,
1995.
Survivors include sons James Richard, Michael and
Jackie Dixon, all of Kannapolis, Jerry Dixon, Concord, and Ronnie Dixon, Charlotte;
daughters Dorothy Beaver, Kannapolis, Bonnie Dixon, Weaverville, and Frances Parson, China
Grove; brothers Melvin Dixon, Kershaw, S.C., Everette Dixon, Kannapolis, and Hayward
Dixon, Patrick, S.C.; sisters Azlee Anderson, Semmes, Ala., Shirley Wayne and Ruth Wilkes,
both of Hartsville, S.C., and Doris Mellons and Carol West, both of Kannapolis; 17
grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

Merriem May Hansell
Merriem May Hansell, 78, Salisbury, died Wednesday
(Sept. 1, 1999) at her home after an extended illness.
Born Oct. 21, 1920, in Gaston County, Miss Hansell
was a daughter of the late Robert C. and Pearl Kimmel Hansel. Educated in the Salisbury
schools, she was a graduate of Boyden High School. She retired in 1975 after 35 years with
the Federal Bureau of Investigation in Washington, D.C. She was a Baptist.
Survivors include sisters Aileen Hansell Ritchie,
Lawrenceville, Ga., Helen P. Hansell, of the home, and Levada Hansell Hudspeth,
Mooresville.
Services: Graveside, 11 a.m. Friday, Rowan
Memorial Park.

Gracie Myers
Gracie Myers, 74, The Laurels of Salisbury, died
Wednesday (Sept. 1, 1999) at Rowan Regional Medical Center after several years of
declining health.
Born Aug. 25, 1925, in Davie County, Miss Myers
was a daughter of the late John and Addie Noble Myers. Educated in the Davie County
schools, she was a domestic worker and a member of Antioch Baptist Church, Granite Quarry.
A daughter, Elnora Myers, died July 31, 1996.
Survivors include daughter Rebecca Tracey,
Salisbury; three grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Services: 2 p.m. Saturday, Antioch Baptist Church, Granite Quarry, conducted by the Rev. Louis
Turner. Burial, church cemetery.
Visitation: 1-2 p.m. Saturday at the church. At
other times the family will be at the home of daughter Rebecca Tracey, 624 E. Franklin St.

EAST SPENCER Essie R. Barton, 79, formerly
of East Winds Apartments, died Thursday (Sept. 2, 1999) at Brian Center Health and
Rehabilitation, Salisbury.

Kevohn Leon Puckett
LEXINGTON Kevohn Leon Puckett, 8, Wall
Street, drowned Saturday (Aug. 28, 1999) at a residence on Irma Avenue.
Born July 26, 1991, in Pomona, Calif., the child
was a son of Kecia Lee Ann Hargrave Puckett, of the home, and Kevin Eugene Puckett of
Salisbury. He was a second-grade student at South Lexington Elementary School. He was a
member of Boy Scouts of America, the Davidson County NAACP Drill Team and Old Smith Grove View Baptist Church, where
he was active in Sunday school and the youth choir. He was a youth member of the NAACP.
Survivors include brothers Kevin Eugene Puckett
Jr., Ontario, Calif., and Kevin Eugene Puckett II, of the home; sisters Laquisha Natavea
Johnson, of the home, and Tyanna Maggie Puckett, of Chino, Calif.; maternal grandparents
Leon and Ruby Hargrave, Linwood; paternal grandparents Maggie Puckett, Upland, Calif., and
Willie Puckett, Lake Arrowhead, Calif.; and great-grandmothers Cordia Scott, Muskogee,
Okla., and Anna Lee Jones, Warren, Ohio.
