Crash kills man on motorcycle

BY NATASHA ASHE
SALISBURY POST

A Salisbury man riding a dirt bike was killed a few blocks from his home after being struck by a car Saturday night.

Twenty-six-year-old Alexander Brandon Smith of 2280 Seventh Street Extension died at the scene after being struck head-on by a car near Mocksville Road.

Around 7:30 p.m., Smith was traveling east on Seventh Street Extension on a bike without a headlight. As two cars traveled west on the same road, a 1993 Lincoln driven by Israel Melton, 20, of 300S. Hudson St. in Spencer attempted to pass the vehicle in front of him. As he passed, Melton’s vehicle hit Smith’s bike head-on.

Smith landed in a ditch, nearly 100 feet from where his motorcycle landed. He was not wearing a helmet, according to investigating N.C. Highway Patrol Trooper K.D. Cagler.

Melton’s car rested in another ditch nearby, out of the sight of people arriving on the scene.

At one point, investigators thought the driver of the car had fled the scene but Melton was found with his car in a wooded area further away from the crash. He was not seriously injured.

Cagler said witnesses reported Melton had the dotted line as he attempted to pass.

The investigation is continuing.
