Playoff picture remains murky

SALISBURY POST

The 1999 high school football season has been very strange for Rowan County teams.

As Post assistant sports editor Mike London points out, this is the 11th week of the prep season, and we still do not know whether four county teams will qualify for the state playoffs, or none.

It’s strange in other ways. The county team with the best record is West Rowan (6-3), but the Falcons are only in a tie for fifth place (with East Rowan) in the 3A South Piedmont Conference.

And, the team with the second-worst record, South Rowan (2-7), is tied for second in the 4A Central Piedmont Conference.

Four Rowan teams can make the playoffs if North Rowan (4-5) wins its final two games in the 2A Central Carolina Conference, if East (5-4) and West each win their final two games, and if South wins its final two games.

North could also make the playoffs if it were to lose to North Stanly and defeat East Davidson, but a tie-breaker would be involved. If South splits its two games, it could still eke out a spot on a tie-breaker. Neither East nor West can afford to lose a game.

It’s unlikely that North, East, West and South will all make the playoffs, but if it were to happen, it would be the first time ever that four Rowan schools accomplished that feat.

Boyden, North and East made the old Western N.C. High School Activities Association playoffs in 1970.

Fifteen years later, 1985, South made the 4A playoffs, West reached the 3A postseason and North earned a 2A berth.

Then, in 1994, it was South (4A), North (2A) and West (2A) that did it.

If only one of those four Rowan teams qualifies for the playoffs, it would mark the 10th straight year the county has had at least one team in the postseason.

Last week’s high school prediction record of 10-1 left the season mark at 107-26-2 for a percentage of .800.

This week’s choices:

North Rowan is in the running for its seventh playoff spot in the past eight years. The Cavaliers (4-5) have had trouble with North Stanly (2-7) the past two years. It’s been a disappointing season for the Comets, who still have a shot at finishing in a three-way tie for third place in the CCC. — North Rowan 26, North Stanly 22.

West’s Falcons are still aiming for a tie for second or third in the SPC, but coach Scott Young’s club can’t look past seventh-place Sun Valley, which almost upset No. 4 Northwest Cabarrus last week — West Rowan 27, Sun Valley 20.

Likewise, East Rowan needs a win over Concord tonight to keep alive the Mustangs’ hopes. Coach Jeff Safrit’s East team will be trying to get the school’s first victory over the Spiders since 1979. Concord has defeated East 20 straight times — Concord 17, East Rowan 8.

The county’s biggest story of the season could be South’s Raiders, if coach Rick Vanhoy’s club can continue the momentum it gained by knocking off West Forsyth last week. South’s teams have been penalized over the years by playing in a league with big-city teams from Winston-Salem and, at one time, Greensboro. Now the Raiders have the opportunity for a sweep of Forsyth teams if they can beat R.J. Reynolds tonight and Mount Tabor next week. Two wins would assure the Raiders of their fourth 4A playoff berth in 15 years. — South Rowan 21, R.J. Reynolds 13.

Salisbury has a tough assignment in its final game: The Hornets must defeat strong Ledford to avoid being the first Salisbury team to go 0-11 and only the third winless team in school history — Ledford 35, Salisbury 8.

Kannapolis travels to Northwest Cabarrus, which would love to knock off the unbeaten Wonders and improve their own playoff chances. The Wonders are rolling toward an 11-0 season — Kannapolis 42, NW Cabarrus 22.

Davie’s War Eagles continue their great season at Mount Tabor, where the visitors can wrap up the CPC title with a win — Davie County 21, Mount Tabor 14.

Other choices:

High Point over Lexington, Harding over Piedmont, Albemarle over South Davidson and Mooresville over St. Stephens.
