Mattie Morris Andrews

Mattie Morris Andrews, 79, Salisbury, died Tuesday (Oct. 26, 1999) at Rowan Regional Medical Center after a number of years of declining health.

Born April 3, 1920, in Denton, Mrs. Andrews was a daughter of the late Jesse Morris and Minnie Fine Morris and the foster daughter of the late Elmer and Lillie Morris. Educated in the Denton and Granite Quarry schools, she graduated from East Spencer High School.

She and her late husband, Charles “Vernon” Andrews, operated Andrews Bakery on West Innes Street. She was a member of Park Avenue United Methodist Church, Hazel Shores Sunday School Class, H&G Circle and the administrative council.

Her husband died Oct. 13, 1984.

Survivors include son Charles V. Andrews Jr., Salisbury; and two granddaughters.

Services: 2 p.m. Thursday, Park Avenue United Methodist Church, conducted by the Rev. Tommy Conder, pastor, and the Rev. Kevin House, pastor, Union United Methodist Church, Wesley Chapel. Burial, Rowan Memorial Park.

Visitation: 7-8:30 tonight, Summersett Funeral Home. At other times the family will be at the home of son Charles V. Andrews, 203 S. Deerfield Circle.

Memorials: Park Avenue United Methodist Church, 500 Park Ave., Salisbury, N.C. 28144.

 

Johnny Albert Bernhardt

The funeral will be Thursday for Johnny Albert Bernhardt, 71, 717 Pinehurst Ave., died Saturday (Oct. 23, 1999) at his home.

Born July 30, 1928, in Rowan County, Mr. Bernhardt was a son of the late late Park Blair and Inez Bernhardt. He attended the Rowan County schools and had been employed by Carolina Stamping Co. A veteran of the U.S. Army, he served in the Korean War. He was a member of J.C. Price American Legion Post 107.

Survivors include wife Christine Foxworth Bernhardt; sons Tracy, Donnell and Tywan Bernhardt, Darren Mitchell and George Wright, all of Salisbury; daughters Donnetta Bernhardt and Beverly Knox, both of Salisbury, and Petra Guy, Charlotte; brother Robert Blair, Alliance, Ohio; sisters Peaches Middleton and Shirley Nicholson, both of Alliance, Ohio, and Etta Mae Blair Malone, New Orleans, La.; 18 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Services: Noon Thursday, Macedonia Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. W.T. Jackson, pastor, and the Rev. Bruce Goodson., Burial, National Cemetery, Salisbury. Military rites by Rowan Veterans Council.

Visitation: 11 a.m.-12 noon Thursday at the church.

Rowan Funeral Service is in charge.

 

Gwendolyn L. Bowden

ROCKWELL — Gwendolyn L. Bowden, 55, Rockwell, died Wednesday (Oct. 27, 1999) at Presbyterian Hospital, Charlotte.

Powles Funeral Home is in charge.

 

Cecil James Harkey

The funeral will be Thursday for Cecil James Harkey, 84, Salisbury, who died Monday (Oct. 25, 1999) at Rowan Regional Medical Center after two years of declining health and a week of serious illness.

Mr. Harkey was one of the most highly decorated veterans in North Carolina, but he made news several years ago when the U.S. government finally awarded him the 22 medals and ribbons he won during World War II and the Korean War.

No one ever denied he won them. The government just didn’t give them to him, and he spent 35 years cutting red tape, going through channels of command and writing letters to the Department of the Army in Washington.

Born May 15, 1915, in Rowan County, Mr. Harkey was a son of the late Charlie Fisher and Norah Ashbarger Harkey. He was educated in the Salisbury schools.

Mr. Harkey retired as a master sergeant from the U.S. Navy after 20 years. He later was employed as a security officer for the state and federal governments.

He was a member of Samuel C. Hart American Legion Post 14 for 45 years and attended the Salvation Army Church.

His wife, Thelma Tumlin Harkey, died Feb. 9, 1995.

Survivors include half sister Mrs. Jackson (Margaret H. ) Simmons, Salisbury.

Services: Graveside, 2 p.m. Thursday, Rowan Memorial Park, conducted by the Rev. Robert Turner.

Visitation: None. The family will be at the home of half sister Margaret Simmons of Salisbury.

Virgie Shimpock Horne

Virgie Beatrice Shimpock Horne, 83, 345 Wiley Lane, formerly of Concord, died Wednesday (Oct. 27, 1999) at the home of daughter Shirley Cress, with whom she lived.

Born Sept. 3, 1916, in Cabarrus County, Mrs. Horne was a daughter of the late Laler Hopkins and Oscar C. Shimpock. She retired as a weaver from Cannon Mills Plant 10, Concord, after 35 years. A member of Friendship United Methodist Church, Concord, she was in the Women’s Missionary Society and taught Sunday school for the young and adult classes.

Her first husband, Ralph H. Burris, died in 1958, and her second husband, Julius Herman Horne, died in 1989. A daughter, Mary Frances Rice, died in 1989.

Survivors, in addition to her daughter, include son Larry Burris, Concord; and daughters Margaret Long, Concord, and Ruth Wright, New Port Richey, Fla.; brothers the Rev. Farrell Shimpock, Albemarle, Troy Shimpock, Kannapolis, and Archie Shimpock, Thomasville; 13 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

Services: 2 p.m. Friday, Friendship United Methodist Church, Concord, conducted by the Rev. Bill Cranfield. Burial, church cemetery.

Visitation: 7-9 p.m. Thursday, Hartsell Funeral Home, Concord. At other times the family will be at the home of son Larry Burris, 4114 Hwy. 73 E., Concord.

Memorials: Friendship United Methodist Church, 4695 Mount Pleasant Road S., Concord, N.C. 28025.

 

Betty Barnhardt Leonard

LEXINGTON — Betty Barnhardt Leonard, 88, formerly of Highway 150 South, died Monday (Oct. 25, 1999) at Golden Age Nursing Home.

Born Nov. 24, 1910, in Davie County, Mrs. Leonard was a daughter of the late James Francis and Damaris Thompson Barnhardt. A homemaker, she was a member of St. Luke’s Lutheran Church, the Senior Ladies Sunday School Class, the Golden Age Club and the Dutch Club.

Her husband, Sam Leonard, died June 14, 1978.

Survivors include daughters Don Ree Michael, Lexington, and Ann Huskey, Charlotte; son Sammy H. Leonard, Lexington; sister Sadie Barnhardt, Richmond, Va.; brother Melvin “Seagle” Barnhardt, Manchester, Tenn.; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Services: 11 a.m. Thursday, St. Luke’s Lutheran Church, conducted by the Rev. Donald Phillips. Burial, Sandy Creek Cemetery.

Visitation: 6:30-8:30 tonight, Piedmont Funeral Home. At other times the family will be at their respective homes.

Memorials: St. Luke’s Lutheran Church, Building Fund, 4299 S. N.C. Hwy. 150, Lexington, N.C. 27295.

 

Walter A. Orrell

SPENCER — Walter A. Orrell, 91, formerly of 9630 S. N.C. Hwy. 150, died Wednesday (Oct. 27, 1999) at Spencer Health Care.

Piedmont Funeral Home, Lexington, is in charge.

 

Betty R. Steinmeyer

Private services will be held for Betty Ramsaur Steinmeyer, 86, 820 Klumac Road, who died Monday (Oct. 25, 1999) at the Salisbury Lutheran Home at Trinity Oaks.

Born Oct. 6, 1913, in Fayetteville, Mrs. Steinmeyer was a daughter of the late Thomas Allan and Louise Stewart Ramsaur. A graduate of Lumberton High School, she attended the University of Cincinnati in Ohio. She owned Steinmeyer-Ramsaur Tile Contractors, Greenville, and attended Boyd Memorial Presbyterian Church, Greenville.

Her husband, Charles Ernest Steinmeyer, died in 1987.

Survivors include daughter Dale S. Lear, Rockwell; and two grandsons.

Services: Private service with burial at the National Cemetery in Salisbury. The Rev. Gene Bost, chaplain at Salisbury Lutheran Nursing Home, will officiate.

Visitation: None.

Summersett Funeral Home is in charge.

Memorials: Donor’s choice.
