Memorial Hospital after a brief illness. She was the sister of Lillian B. Petrea of
Salisbury and Dorothy Misenheimer of Statesville, a former Salisbury resident.
Funeral services were Oct. 20 at Bristol Drive
Baptist Church. The Rev.Frankie Bass and the Rev. Joe Whitworth officiated. Burial was at
Oakwood Cemetery.

Robert Robbie Corker
The funeral will be Wednesday for Robert Leroy
Robbie Corker, 17, Salisbury, who died Monday (Oct. 25, 1999) at his home
after five months of declining health.
Born Sept. 26, 1982, in Jacksonville, Fla., Mr.
Corker was a son of Danny William and Karen Jo Raywood Corker of the home. A senior at
West Rowan High School, he was a member of St. Pauls Lutheran Church.
Survivors, in addition to his parents, include
brother Danny Williams Corker II, of the home; paternal grandfather Robbie L. Corker,
Redmond, Ore.; and paternal grandmother Bessie Godfrey, Jacksonville, Fla.

Martha Hooks Deese
BADIN Martha Hooks Deese, 97, formerly of
134 Maple St., died Monday (Oct. 25, 1999) at Stanly Manor Nursing Center, Albemarle.
Born March 5, 1902, in Anson County, Mrs. Deese
was a daughter of the late John Franklin and Mary Ellen Hildreth Hooks. A homemaker, she
was a seamstress and baked cakes for the public for a number of years. She was a lifelong
member of First Presbyterian Church, where she was active as long as her health permitted.
She was treasurer of the Kitty Sue Parris Bible Class for 43 years.
Her husband, Fincher Postal Deese, and son, Bob
Deese, preceded her in death.
Survivors include daughter Mrs. Cello
(Pearline)Lowder, Eden; sister Annie H. Jordan, Wadesboro; three grandchildren; five
great-grandchildren; and two step-great-grandchildren.

MOCKSVILLE Louise Foster Essex, 76, Call
Road, died Monday (Oct. 25, 1999) at Forsyth Medical Center, Winston-Salem.
Born Jan. 24, 1923, in Davie County, Mrs. Essex
was a daughter of the late Spencer J. and Maud Foster Foster. A homemaker, she and her
husband of 52 years, H. David Essex, were dairy farmers.
She was a lifelong member of Bethel United
Methodist Church, where she taught in the childrens department for over 40 years,
served as church treasurer, a member of the administrative board and a charter member of
the United Methodist Women.
Survivors, in addition to her husband, include son
James JimmieEssex, of the home; and sister Ruth Foster Call, Mocksville.

Born Aug. 16, 1910, in Davie County, Mr. Jenkins
was a son of the late Henry and Margaret Nance Jenkins. Retired, he was a well digger.
His wife, Glennie Bracken Jenkins, died May 29,
1999.

Thomas Robert T.R. Jones, 71, of Bryan
and Austin, Texas, died Friday (Oct. 22, 1999) at Seton Hospital, Austin,Texas. His
daughter, Mrs. Mike (Cathy) Marlor is a resident of Salisbury.

Fred Manley Ramseur Jr.
The funeral will be Thursday for Fred Manley
Ramseur Jr., 74, Salisbury, who died Saturday (Oct. 23, 1999) at Hefner VAMedical Center.
Born Feb. 12, 1925, in Durham, Mr. Ramseur was a
son of the late Fred M. and Beulah Propst Ramseur. A veteran, he served in Europe during
World War II.He graduated from Lenoir-Rhyne College, Hickory, and Lutheran Theological
Southern Seminary, Columbia, S.C. He retired from Lutheran ministry in 1984 after serving
as pastor of St. Stephens, Hickory; Emmanuel, Lincolnton; Holy Trinity, Charlotte; and
Ascension, Wilson.
A son, Fred M. Ramseur III, preceded him in death.
Survivors include son David Ramseur, Charlotte;
brothers Bill Ramseur, Lake Norman, and Jack Ramseur, Conover; sisters Irene Queen,
Hickory, Mildred Hewitt, Newton, Dorothy Joines, Winston-Salem, Geraldine Harbinson,
Charlotte; two grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Bobby Gordon Sellers

for Bobby Gordon Sellers, 68, 2040 N. Main St., who died Sunday (Oct. 24, 1999) at his
home.
Born March 28, 1931, in Cabarrus County, Mr.
Sellers was a son of Eula Carter Sellers Benfield, Kannapolis, and the late Ernest
Sellers. Educated in the Cabarrus County schools, he retired from Cannon Mills.
His wife, Helen Speck Sellers, died in February
1988.

Ben Edward Sims Jr.
The funeral will be Wednesday for Ben Edward Sims
Jr., 77, 130 Knotty Pine Circle, who died Saturday (Oct. 23, 1999) at Rowan Regional
Medical Center.
Born May 28, 1922, in Rowan County, Mr. Sims was a
son of the late Ben Edward and Lillie Hall Sims. He was educated in the Rowan County
schools and retired from Southern Railroad. A Baptist, he served in the U.S. Army during
World War II.
Survivors include companion Sarah Sullivan, of the
home; stepson John Provoid, Salisbury; stepdaughter Patricia Burch, Greensboro; grandson
reared in the home Jeffrey Lewis Sullivan, Salisbury; brother Arthur Ray Sims, East
Spencer; sisters Annie Sims Robertson and Beatrice Sims Moser, both of East Spencer; and a
host of other grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Born Nov. 22, 1931, in Stanly County, Mr. Smith
was a son of the late Claude Monroe and Viola Victoria Williams Smith. He retired as a
supervisor from Fieldcrest Cannon card room.
Survivors include wife Vernie Mae Love Smith;
daughter Wanda Kay Smith Burnette, Stanfield; son Donnie Warren Smith, Norwood; sisters
Gladys Eury and Mildred Shaver, both of Oakboro; brothers Billy, Melton and Jimmy Smith,

Foyell Clifton Swing
KELSEYVILLE, Calif. Foyell Clifton Swing,
81, Kelseyville, a native of Lexington, N.C., died Tuesday (Oct. 12, 1999) at Pacific
Regency Convalescent Hospital.
Born July 26, 1918, Mr. Swing was a sergeant in
the U.S. Air Force and a member of First Assembly of God, Clearlake. He was a movie
projectionist for IATSE Union Local 420, a life member of the DAV, Toastmasters Club and
the Air Force Sergeants Association.
His sons, Gary and Dale Swing, preceded him in
death.
Survivors include wife Lorraine Swing; daughters
Vickie Lynn Swing, Rohnert Park, and Cheryl Anne Swing, Kelseyville; and one
granddaughter.

Fred Pink Young
SPENCER The funeral will be Wednesday for
Fred Pink Young, 93, 1404 S. Salisbury Ave., who died Sunday (Oct. 24, 1999) at Spencer
Health Care Center after several years of declining health.
Born Feb. 1, 1906, in Davidson County, Mr. Young
was a son of the late Robert Lee and Edna Clement Young. Educated in the Davidson County
schools, he retired after 49 years from North Carolina Finishing Co. He was a member and
former deacon of Oakdale Baptist Church and a member of the Mens Bible Class. He was
also a charter member of the North Carolina Finishing Co. 25 Year Club.
Survivors include wife Ethel Shepherd Young, whom
he married Jan. 1, 1927; son Arnold Fred Young, Newport News, Va.; daughter Lenora Y.
Cartledge, Maryville, Tenn.; brother Melvin C. Young, Lexington; and a large number of
grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Services: Noon, Wednesday, Oakdale Baptist Church,
conducted by the Rev.Robert T. Heart, pastor, the Rev. John Johnston, a grandson, and the
Rev. Jay Boggs, a nephew. The body will be placed in the church at 11. Burial, church
cemetery.
