Faith makes the call: Trick-or-treat on Saturday

BY SARA PITZER
SALISBURY POST

Faith Mayor Mark Shores called the Post early this morning to say his town will officially observe Halloween on Saturday.

Only one other town has made such an official announcement. Halloween in Kannapolis will also be celebrated on Saturday, according to a spokeswoman in Kannapolis Town Hall.

Halloween falls on a Sunday this year, leaving room for quarrel in every family with kids and question in every home that gives out treats. If the holiday falls on Sunday, that’s when it should be observed, some say. It’s not an appropriate activity for Sunday and should be celebrated on Saturday or Monday, others say. But Monday is a school night. And people have other things planned for Saturday. And if you pick a night that isn’t Oct. 31, the actual Halloween date, you’ll end up with two nights of trick-or-treating. It all depends on how you look at things.

When Salisbury City Council considered the issue last week, members agreed to do nothing, to “not mess with it,” in the words of Mayor Susan Kluttz. So, in Salisbury, parents will decide which nights their children will trick or treat, and households will decide when to turn on their lights and give out treats.

China Grove came down firmly in the middle. Police Chief Michael Bentley said the town had made no official assignment but is encouraging people to do their Halloween trick or treating on Saturday.

A spokeswoman in Cleveland town hall said, “We have nothing to do with Halloween.”

Officials in Spencer, East Spencer, Granite Quarry, Landis, and Rockwell all said they had discussed the matter and decided to leave the choice of nights for Halloween activities up to parents.
