Johnny Barnhardt

Johnny Barnhardt, 70, 171 Pinehurst, died Saturday (Oct. 23, 1999) after a long illness.

Rowan Funeral Service is in charge.

 

Richard Benard Menius

Richard Benard Menius, 79, of Winston-Salem, died Friday (Oct. 22, 1999) at North Carolina Baptist Hospital after complications from lung cancer.

Born May 30, 1920 in China Grove, Mr. Menius was a son of the late Lillie Honbarger and George A. Menius. Mr. Menius retired as senior vice-president of Wachovia Bank after 36 years of service. During his early career, he served as the manager of Wachovia’s first branch bank and was a charter member of the Dilworth Rotary Club. He also organized Salisbury’s first United Way organization and was president of the Salisbury Sales Executive Club, Salisbury Rotary Club and was active in First Presbyterian Church.

Survivors include his wife of 59 years, Elma Chapman Menius; daughters Jeanie M. Penland, Raleigh, and Pamela M. Maynard, Atlanta, Ga.; son Richard “Rick”B. Menius Jr., Winston-Salem; and two grandchildren.

Service:11 a.m. Monday, Reynolda Presbyterian Church.

Visitation:The family will receive friends at the church immediately following the service.

Memorials: The American Cancer Society, 1900 S. Hawthorne Road, Winston-Salem, N.C. 27103.

Memorial Funeral Chapel is in charge.

 

Shirley Coley Ritchie

CHINA GROVE - Shirley Coley Ritchie, 84, 2155 Hwy. 29 South, died Saturday (Oct. 23, 1999) at her residence.

Born July 27, 1915 in Stanley County, Mrs. Ritchie was a daughter of the late Lillian Crayton and Bart Coley. A 1933 graduate of Rockwell High School, she was a home seamstress and worked at Belks in Kannapolis.

In 1975 she opened Ritchie Fabrics, which she operated until 1991 when she retired. A member of South China Grove Baptist Church, Mrs. Ritchie was a Sunday school teacher.

Her husband, Eddie Monroe Ritchie, died in October 1991.

Survivors include sons Dennis and Gary Ritchie, both of China Grove; brother Ray Coley, Ormond Beach, Fla.; sisters Ruth Peeler and Barbara Earnhardt, both of Salisbury, Marie Corn, Durham, Jewel Elium, Winston-Salem, and Frances Thompson, Charleston, S.C.; and five grandchildren.

Services:2 p.m. Monday, South China Grove Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Derald Adams. Burial, Greenlawn Cemetery.

Visitation:7-8:30 p.m. tonight, Linn-Honeycutt Funeral Home, China Grove. At other times the family will be at the residence.

Blondine Settlemyre

KANNAPOLIS — Blondine Drucella Scarborough Settlemyre, 82, 1222 Milton Ave., died Saturday (Oct. 23, 1999) at her home after several weeks of declining health.

Born Sept. 25, 1917 in Madison County, Ga., Mrs. Settlemyre was a daughter of the late Mary Moon and James Oscar Scarborough. Mrs. Settlemyre was a resident of this area since 1936. She was a member of West A Street Church of God, where she was a member of the Senior Citizens Club and Ladies Ministries. She taught Sunday school for many years.

Survivors include her husband, Charles H. Settlemyre, of the home; brother Walter Scarborough, China Grove; sisters Lucille Forester, Carnesville, Ga., Frances Forester, Evangeline Callaway, and Mary Jane Beard, all of Royston, Ga.

Services:11 a.m. Monday, West A Street Church of God, Kannapolis, conducted by the Rev. Sam Crisp. Burial, Carolina Memorial Park, Kannapolis.

Visitation:7-9 p.m. tonight, Whitley’s Funeral Home.

Willie Swicegood Shoaf

Willie Swicegood Shoaf, 87, of Salisbury, died Saturday (Oct. 23, 1999) at Rowan Regional Medical Center after several months of declining health.

Born Feb. 18, 1912 in Rowan County, Mrs. Shoaf was a daughter of the late Florence Barnes and John M. Swicegood. A graduate of Boyden High School, Mrs. Shoaf worked at Cannon Mills Swink Plant until her retirement. She was a lifelong member of Enon Baptist Church, served as secretary of the Senior Department and taught Sunday school.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Grady Lee Shoaf, on Sept. 28, 1966.

Survivors include son Ned Shoaf, Salisbury; brother Roy Swicegood, Newport News, Va.; sisters Helen Honeycutt, Grace Waters, Dorothy Jones and Mary Lanning, all of Salisbury; and two grandchildren.

Services:1 p.m. Monday, Enon Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Dr. Randall Dockins, interim minister at Enon Baptist Church and the Rev. Dr. Steven Mowery of Bethpage Presbyterian Church, Kannapolis. Burial, Rowan Memorial Park.

Visitation:6:30-8 p.m. tonight, Summersett Funeral Home.

Frances Forrest Stiller

NEW LONDON - Frances Elizabeth Forrest Stiller, 75, 25788 Harwood Road, died Friday (Oct. 22, 1999) at Britthaven of the Piedmont, Albemarle.

Born Mar. 12, 1924 in Stanly County, Mrs. Stiller was a daughter of the late Mary Elizabeth Almond and William Henry Forrest. Self-employed, Mrs. Stiller was a health care giver (sitter).

Survivors include her husband, Luke Edward Stiller Sr., New London; sons Henry Lee Stiller, Dallas, and Luke Edward “Ed” Stiller Jr., New London; sister Christine F. Borders, Misenheimer; brothers Cleatus J. Forrest, Troy, and Homer Forrest Badin; six grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Service:11 a.m. Monday, Hartsell Funeral Home-Albemarle, conducted by the Rev. R. David Ayers. Burial, Mountain View Baptist Church Cemetery, Albemarle.

Visitation:6-8 p.m. tonight, Hartsell Funeral Home.

 

James Mason Tucker

OAKBORO - James Mason Tucker, 79, 8615 N.C. Hwy. 205, died Saturday (Oct. 23, 1999) at Wesley Care Center, Charlotte.

Born Aug. 27, 1920 in Anson County, Mr. Tucker was a son of the late Ella Rose Beachum and Walter Barry Tucker. Mr. Tucker worked at Cannon Mills, Kannapolis, spinning, for 40 years. A member of Mineral Springs Baptist Church, Mr. Tucker was a former deacon and was on the Stanly County Baptist Executive Board for many years. He served in the U.S. Army during World War IIand was a member of DAV.

Survivors include wife Hallie Kennedy Tucker, Oakboro; daughter Linda Tucker Austin, Oakboro; sister Dean Phifer, Peachland; brothers Buford Tucker, Charlotte, and Scott Tucker, Matthews; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Services: 4 p.m. Monday, Mineral Springs Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Michael Taylor and the Rev. Kenneth Martin. Burial, church cemetery.

Visitation: 6-8 p.m. tonight, Hartsell Funeral Home, Albemarle. At other times the family will be at the home of a daughter Linda T. Austin, 16705 Silver Road, Oakboro.
