Thelma Kelley Bryant

Thelma Kelley Bryant, 88, formerly of Spencer, died Tuesday (Oct. 19, 1999)at Brightmoor Nursing Center, Salisbury.

Born April 10, 1911, in Indiana, Mrs. Bryant was a daughter of the late Henrietta and W.T. Kelley. Educated in Somerset, Ky., schools, Mrs. Bryant was a homemaker. She was a member of Trinity Baptist Church, Spencer.

Her husband, S.M. “Rusty” Bryant, died April 17, 1972; a son, David L. Bryant, died April 19, 1991.

Survivors include daughter Mrs. Donald (Patricia) Bryant Everhart, Spencer; five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Services:11 a.m. Friday, Summersett Funeral Home Memorial Chapel, conducted by the Rev. Rodney Hagans, pastor, Central United Methodist Church. Burial, Rowan Memorial Park.

Visitation:10-11 a.m. Friday, Summersett Funeral Home.

Paul Marshall Curry

EAST SPENCER — Paul Marshall Curry, Smyrna,Ga., a former East Spencer resident, died Tuesday (Oct. 21, 1999) at Floyd Medical Center, Rome,Ga., after an extended illness.

Born Nov. 22, 1922, in East Spencer, Mr. Curry was a son of the late Marshall Lewis and Sarah Kelly Curry. A graduate of Dunbar High School, he retired as a bus driver from the city of New York. He was a Lutheran and served in the U.S. Army during World War II.

Survivors include son Paul Curry Jr., Toledo, Ohio; daughters Tracy McCargo, Smyrna, Ga., and Geraldine Davis, Mapleton, Ga.; sisters Martha Briley, Salisbury, and Evelyn Curry Prelotte, East Spencer; and two grandchildren.

Services: Graveside, 1 p.m. Friday, National Cemetery, Salisbury, conducted by the Rev. James L. Stowe.

Noble and Kelsey Funeral Home, Salisbury, is in charge.

 

Wayne Bradford Duttera

Services will be Saturday for Wayne Bradford Duttera, 88, Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla., formerly of Salisbury, who died Sunday (Sept. 25, 1999) in Florida.

Services: Graveside, 11 a.m. Saturday, City Memorial Park, conducted by the Rev. Judith L. White, associate pastor, First United Methodist Church. The body was cremated. Burial, City Memorial Park.

Visitation: The family will receive friends following the service at the cemetery.

Summersett Funeral Home is in charge.

 

Irene Casper Farmer

KANNAPOLIS — The funeral will be Friday for Irene Casper Farmer, 88, 908 E. 13th St., who died Wednesday (Oct. 20, 1999) at NorthEast Medical Center, Concord.

Born Jan. 9, 1911, in Rowan County, Mrs. Farmer was a daughter of the late W.A. and Ada Shuping Casper. She retired after 57 years with Cannon Mills plant 4 cloth room. A member of First Free Will Baptist Church, she was active until her health failed. She previously served on the advisory board and was past president of the Ladies Auxiliary and Joyful Citizens. She once taught in the primary department.

Her husband, F. Marion Farmer, died in March 1972.

Survivors include daughter Mrs. Earl (Marjorie) Register, Kannapolis; son C. Ralph Farmer, of the home; sister Mrs. M.O. (Edna) Beaver, China Grove; brother V.S. Casper, Salisbury; three grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

Services: 2 p.m. Friday, Lady’s Funeral Home Chapel, conducted by Dr. Johnny Cook and the Rev. Bill Roberts. Burial, Kannapolis Cemetery.

Visitation: 7-9 tonight at the funeral home. At other times the family will be at the home on East 13th Street.

Lena Mae Goodman

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Lena Mae Goodman, 84, Louisville, Ky., formerly of Salisbury, died Wednesday (Oct. 20, 1999) at Rockford Manor, Louisville, Ky.

Born March 2, 1915, in Rowan County, N.C., Mrs. Goodman was a daughter of the late David Hampton and Bertha Mae File Winecoff. Retired, she had been a sales clerk with Milady’s Womens Apparel in Salisbury, N.C. She was a member of First United Methodist Church of Salisbury and Bethany United Methodist Church, Louisville.

Her husband, Emerson Clayton Goodman, died Feb. 20, 1978.

Survivors include son Robert C. Goodman, Louisville.; sister Elizabeth Scearce, Salisbury, N.C.; and two grandchildren.

Services: 2 p.m. Sunday, Summersett Funeral Home Memorial Chapel, conducted by the Rev. Thomas L. Griffis, pastor, First United Methodist Church of Salisbury. Burial, Chestnut Hill Cemetery.

Visitation: 2-9 p.m. Saturday and 12-2 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

 

Vivian Cowan Hyde

CLEVELAND — The funeral will be Saturday for Vivian Cowan Hyde, 76, 103 Phifer St., who died Monday (Oct. 18, 1999) at 607 Dobson Drive, Charlotte, after several weeks of serious illness.

Services: 2 p.m. Saturday,Third Creek AME Zion Church, conducted by the Rev. Donnie Kent. Burial, church cemetery.

Visitation: 1 p.m. Saturday at the church. At other times the family will be at the home of a grandson who was reared in the home, Ronald Hyde, 101 Sycamore Road, Salisbury.

Hazel Smith Ijames

COOLEEMEE — Hazel Smith Ijames, 83, Main Street, died Wednesday (Oct. 20, 1999) at her residence.

Born Sept. 14, 1916, in Davie County, Mrs. Ijames was a daughter of the late Nora Spry and W. Albert Smith. A homemaker, she was a member of Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd of Cooleemee.

Her husband, Glenn Ijames, died in 1987.

Survivors include son James W. Ijames, Salisbury, and Richard L. Ijames, Mocksville; daughters Glenda Ijames O’Neal, Wilmington, and Penny Ijames Bray, Morganton; brothers Richard and Lawrence Smith, both of Cooleemee; sisters Sue Cuthrell, Cooleemee; 10 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

Services:Graveside, 11 a.m. Friday, Center Untied Methodist Church Cemetery, conducted by the Rev. Dennis Marshall.

Visitation: At the home, 110 Main St.

Bessie Johnson

ALBEMARLE — Bessie Leonard Ribelin Johnson, 82, 24724 Highway 52 S., died Wednesday (Oct. 20, 1999) at Stanly Memorial Hospital.

Born July 26, 1917, in Cabarrus County, Mrs. Johnson was a daughter of the late James Franklin and Pearl Vandora Earnhardt Leonard. Retired from American &Efird Mills, she was a member of West Albemarle Baptist Church.

Her first husband, Lee Franklin Ribelin, and second husband, John Frank Johnson, preceded her in death.

Survivors include sons James Lee “Jim” Ribelin, Central Point, Ore., and Robert Franklin “Bob” Ribelin, Anchorage, Alaska; stepson James F. “Jimmy” Johnson, Rock Hill, S.C.; stepdaughter Sylvia Elizabeth Garlich, New Jersey; sisters Virginia Coley and Rachel Hopkins, both of Albemarle; 15 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Services: 2 p.m. Saturday, Hartsell Funeral Home Chapel, conducted by the Rev.David Alexander and the Rev. Jessie Dennis. Burial, Fairview Memorial Park.

Visitation: 12:30-2 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.

 

Christopher Mack Jordan

MOCKSVILLE — Christopher Mack Jordan, 22, Petes Lane, died Tuesday (Oct. 19, 1999) in Davie County.

Born Aug. 3, 1977, in Rowan County, Mr. Jordan, a son of Joe and Glenda Whitt Jordan of Mocksville, was a 1996 graduate of Davie High School. Employed by Jockey International Textile, he was a member of Blaise Baptist Church.

Survivors, in addition to his parents, include brothers Brian and Kevin Jordan, both of Mocksville; and sisters Sharon Lawson and Tara Whitt, both of Mocksville.

Services: 8 tonight, Blaise Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Glenn Sellers. Burial, church cemetery.

Visitation: 6-8 tonight at the church.

Johnsie Joan Martin

MOCKSVILLE — Johnsie Joan Martin Martin, 70, Main Street, died Tuesday (Oct. 19, 1999) at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center, Winston-Salem, following a recent heart surgery.

Born March 22, 1929, in Yadkin County, Mrs. Martin, a daughter of the late John Frank and Gertrude Allgood Martin, attended Mitchell College. She retired in 1989 after many years with Davie County schools and was a member of First Baptist Church, Mocksville.

A daughter, Suzanne Ridehour, preceded her in death.

Survivors include husband R.P. Martin; sons Phil Martin, Raleigh, and Mark T. Martin, Mocksville; brother Fred Martin, Kannapolis; sisters Mary Brock, Mocksville, Betty Barnes, King, Faye Hylton, High Point, and Ruth Steelman, Kannapolis; four grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Services: 3 today, First Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Bill Davis. Burial, Rose Cemetery.

Visitation: 2-3 today at the church.

Clara Parham

KANNAPOLIS — Clara Parham, 62, 8451 Cloverfield Drive, died Thursday (Oct. 21, 1999) at her home.

Jerry Lee Roach

ROCKWELL — Jerry Lee Roach, 50, 2045 Organ Church Road, died Wednesday (Oct. 20, 1999) at NorthEast Medical Center, Concord.

Born May 26, 1949, in Cabarrus County, Mr. Roach was the son of the late Fred Leroy and Pearlie Mae Morgan Roach. A generator supervisor with the city of Concord, he served in the U.S. Marine Corps in the Vietnam War.

Survivors include son Kenneth Shelton Roach, Rockwell; daughter Michele Annette Roach Hall, Landis; brothers Larry Edward and Terry Wayne Roach, both of Concord; and one granddaughter.

Services: 11 a.m. Friday, Hartsell Funeral Home Chapel, Concord. Burial, Carolina Memorial Park, Kannapolis.

Visitation: 7-8:30 tonight at the funeral home.

 

James Floyd Walton

ALBEMARLE — James Floyd Walton, 81, 1300 Montgomery Ave., died Wednesday (Oct. 20, 1999) at Mercy Hospital, Charlotte.

Born July 13, 1918, in Surry County, Mr. Walton was a son of the late Charles Lee and Agnes Davis Walton. Retired, he was last employed by E.J.Snyder and Co. He attended Fairview Baptist Church and was a member of the National Federation for the Blind and a past president of the YMCASenior Citizens Club. A veteran of the U.S. Navy, he served in the Pacific Theater during World War II. He was a member of Albemarle-Stanly County DAV and VFW.

His first wife, Ruth Morton Walton, preceded him in death.

Survivors include wife Lucille Pickler Thomas Walton; daughter Louise W. Lowder, Albemarle; son James F. Walton Jr., Albemarle; stepdaughter Carolyn T. Pickler, New London; stepson David Thomas, Albemarle; brothers Charles Walton, Clyde, Hugh Walton, Kernersville, and Jack Walton, Winston-Salem; and sisters Josie Dark, Pocatello, Idaho, and Ruth Rijock, Miami Beach, Fla.

Services: 4 p.m. Friday, Fairview Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Delane Burris and the Rev. George Bradshaw. Burial, Fairview Memorial Park.

Visitation: 7-9 tonight, Hartsell Funeral Home, Albemarle. At other times the family will be at the home on Montgomery Avenue.

Ada Fesperman Wessman

Ada Fesperman Wessman, 85, formerly of 3051 Old Mocksville Road, died Tuesday (Oct. 19, 1999) at Genesis ElderCare of Salisbury after six months of serious illness.

Born June 12, 1914, in Rowan County, Mrs. Wessman was a daughter of the late Fred and Mary Eudy Fesperman. Educated in the Rowan County schools, she was a homemaker and member of Main Street Baptist Church, China Grove.

Survivors include son Charles E. Wessman, Salisbury; sister Beaulah F. Link, Salisbury; and two grandchildren.

Services: 2 p.m. Friday, Summersett Funeral Home Memorial Chapel, conducted by the Rev. Larry Beaver, pastor, Main Street Baptist Church, China Grove. Burial, Rowan Memorial Park.

Visitation: 7-8:30 tonight at the funeral home.
