Edith Roseman Auerback

Edith Roseman Auerback, 77, 6850 Faith Road, died Monday (Oct. 18, 1999)at Rowan Regional Medical Center.

Born Aug. 8, 1922, in Rowan County, Mrs. Auerback was a daughter of the late Myrtle Mattie Mae Bost and Henry J. Roseman. Educated in Rowan County, Mrs. Auerback retired from Rowan Industries. She was a member of Organ Lutheran Church and Organ seniors.

Survivors include son Charles Auerback, of the home; daughter Darlene Lopez, Salisbury; J.C. Roseman, Salisbury; and three grandchildren.

Services: 11 a.m. Friday, Organ Lutheran Church, conducted by the Rev. Robert Yount. Burial, church cemetery.

Visitation:7-8:30 p.m. Thursday, Linn-Honeycutt Funeral Home, China Grove. At other times, the family will be at the home of daughter, Darlene Lopez, 105 Quail Drive.

Clyde Eugene Barringer

CONCORD — Clyde Eugene Barringer, 74, 509 Archibald Road, died Tuesday (Oct. 19, 1999) at NorthEast Medical Center.

Born Dec. 30, 1925, in Cabarrus County, Mr. Barringer was a son of the late Mary Faggart and Guy Edney Barringer. Retired as a heavy equipment operator from Cannon Mills Co., he was a member of Mount Hermon Lutheran Church. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War.

Survivors include wife Juanita Howell Barringer; sons Eddie Barringer, China Grove, and James “Jim”Barringer, Concord; brothers Wilson “Bud”Barringer, Concord, and Wayne Barringer, Georgia; sisters Ruth and Doris Barringer, Betty Welch, Evyonne Shoe and Irene Greene, all of Concord; and three grandchildren.

Services:2 p.m. Friday, Mount Hermon Lutheran Church, conducted by the Rev. T.C. Plexico. Burial, church cemetery.

Visitation: 7-8:30 p.m. Thursday, Hartsell Funeral Home of Concord.

Robert Earle Blue

CONCORD — Robert Earle Blue, 77, 285 Lincoln St., died Monday (Oct. 18, 1999) at his residence.

Born April 18, 1922, in Cumberland County, Mr. Blue was a son of the late Mable Caple and the Rev. John Henry Blue. He was a member of American Legion Post 172 for 50 years.

Survivors include wife Berthinia Blue, of the home; daughter Elwanda Blue Johnson, Beltsville, Mass.; sons Robert Earl Blue III, Cary, and Cedric Kim Blue, Greensboro; brother Willie C. Blue, Hillsboro; and six grandchildren.

Services:11 a.m. Friday, Price Memorial AME Zion Church, conducted by the Rev. Anthony Johnson, pastor, and the Rev. Reynard Rustin. Burial, National Cemetery, Salisbury.

Thelma Kelly Bryant

Thelma Kelly Bryant, 88, formerly of Spencer, died Tuesday (Oct. 19, 1999) at Brightmoor Nursing Home, Salisbury.

Betty Lefler Earnhardt

ALBEMARLE — Betty Ruth Lefler Earnhardt, 61, 34872-14 Lowder Road, died Monday (Oct. 18, 1999) at her home.

Born May 15, 1938, in Stanly County, Mrs. Earnhardt was a daughter of the late Ludie Mae Gallimore and Robert Benjamin Lefler. Mrs. Earnhardt was last employed by Collins &Aikman textiles.

Her husband, Carl Monroe Earnhardt, preceded her in death.

Survivors include son Jerry W. Earnhardt, Albemarle; brothers James L. and Charles H. Lefler, both of Albemarle; sister Peggy L. Taylor, Albemarle; and one granddaughter.

Services:2 p.m. Thursday, Norwood Church of the Nazarene, Norwood, conducted by the Rev. Kenneth Myers. Burial, Norview Gardens.

Visitation:7-9 tonight, Hartsell Funeral Home of Albemarle. At other times the family will be at the home of son Jerry W. Earnhardt, 20231-A Old Aquadale Road.

KANNAPOLIS — Irene Casper Farmer, 88, 908 E. 13th St., died Wednesday (Oct. 20, 1999)at NorthEast Medical Center, Concord.

Vivian Cowan Hyde

CLEVELAND — Vivian Cowan Hyde, 76, 103 Phifer St., died Monday (Oct. 18, 1999)at 607 Dobson Drive, Charlotte, after several weeks of illness.

Born March 29, 1923, in Rowan County, she was a daughter of the late Martha Cowan. A graduate of Rowan County public schools, she retired from Salisbury-Rowan Schools, West Rowan Middle School. She was a member of Third Creek AME Zion Church, the stewardess and deaconess boards, Life Members Council, Parent Body Missionary, usher board, and received District Usher of the Year award. She was also a class leader.

Her daughter, Emma B. Blue, died April 23, 1990; a son, George Hyde III, also preceded her in death.

Survivors include daughters Brenda Pierce, Charlotte, and Martha Hyde, Los Angeles, Calif.; brother Grover Cowan, Philadelphia, Pa.; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Willie Smith Ijames

Willie Smith Ijames, 83, Cooleemee, died Wednesday (Oct. 20, 1999).

Everette ‘Jake’Jacobs

ALBEMARLE — Everette Eugene “Jake”Jacobs, 401 Hawthorne Ave., formerly of Salisbury, died Tuesday (Oct. 19, 1999) at his residence.

Ethel Irene Kluttz

CONCORD — Ethel Irene Kluttz, 87, 430 Brookwood Ave. N.E., formerly of Rockwell, died Monday (Oct. 18, 1999) at Concord Nursing Center.

Born Dec. 15, 1911, in Cabarrus County, Miss Kluttz was a daughter of the late Emma Goodman and Charles A. Kluttz. Educated in Cabarrus County schools she was a graduate of Mount Pleasant High School. A lifelong member of Boger United Church of Christ, she once taught in the church school. She was a leader and teacher in the summer Bible school, a member of the women of the church and secretary of the Women’s Sunday Circle. She was active in various programs, projects and activities of the church as long as her health permitted.

Survivors include brother George E. Kluttz and sister Ruth Misenheimer, both of Rockwell.

Services: 2 p.m. Thursday, Gordon Funeral Home Chapel, Mount Pleasant, conducted by the Rev. Dr. Walter Patton, the Rev. Marion Rhyne and the Rev. Dr. Donald McManus. Burial, Boger United Church of Christ Cemetery.

Visitation: 1-2 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. At other times the family will be at the home of brother George E. Kluttz, 3635 Tyler Road, Rockwell.

Dr. Edwin W. Lipe

KANNAPOLIS — Dr. Edwin W. Lipe, 89, 301 Idlewood Drive, died Tuesday (Oct. 19, 1999) at Brian Center.

Born May 5, 1910, in Raleigh, Dr. Lipe was a son of the late Nell Witherspoon and Henry L. Lipe. He attended Duke University and graduated from the Atlanta Southern Dental College, and was a member of the Sigma Alpha Epsilon Fraternity and Omega Dental Fraternity.

He practiced dentistry in Kannapolis and with the N.C. Department of Human Resources in the schools of Cabarrus and surrounding counties. Dr. Lipe was a member of Trinity Methodist Church and served in England during World War II with the 8th Air Force Dental Corp.

Survivors include wife Gladys Gette Lipe, whom he married Jan. 10, 1946, and brother Henry Lipe Jr., Asheville.

Services:2 p.m. Thursday, Trinity United Methodist Church, conducted by the Rev. Don Shuman, the Rev. Wendy Shenk-Evans and Sarah Weaver. Burial, Carolina Memorial Park.

Visitation: 12:30-1:30 p.m. Thursday, Lady’s Funeral Home.

Oscar Wayne Miller

KANNAPOLIS — Oscar Wayne Miller, 74, 1000 E. 11th St., died Tuesday (Oct. 19, 1999) at NorthEast Medical Center, Concord, after one week of serious illness.

Born Oct. 13, 1925, in Wilbar, Mr. Miller was a son of the late Alice Mash and the Rev. Ed O. Miller. In earlier years he was employed by Cannon Mills Co. Plant 1 village maintenance department for many years. He later worked with the N.C. Department of Cultural Resources, History &Archives Division, for 13 years until his retirement in 1990.

Survivors include wife Genoa Moose Milller; daughter Marlene Miller Griffin, Waxham; and two grandchildren.

Services:3:30 p.m. Thursday, Whitley’s Funeral Home Chapel, conducted by the Rev. Jeff Upright. Burial, Carolina Memorial Park.

Visitation: 7-8:30 tonight at the funeral home.

 

Ronald Richard Ruben

Ronald Richard Ruben, 59, a native of Tampa, Fla., formerly of Salisbury, died Monday (Oct. 18, 1999) after a period of declining health.

Mr. Ruben was a son of the late Oscar “Battling Oscar” Rodriguez and Francis “Baby Francis”Hope Voges. He graduated from Chamberlain High, Tampa Fla., and served in the U.S. Navy. He was a former carrier for the Salisbury Post.

Survivors include wife Peggy Gulledge Ruben, Salisbury; sons Tim Ruben, Kannapolis, Terry Ruben, and Steve Ruben, both of Salisbury; brother Jerry Rodriguez, Alabama; sister Roxanna Morgan, Brooksville, Fla.; and two grandchildren.

The body was cremated.

Visitation:7-9 p.m. Friday, at the home of son Tim Ruben, 705 Broad St., Kannapolis.

 

O.W. ‘Dub’Rustin

EAST SPENCER — O.W. “Dub” Rustin, 76, 124 Correll St., died Tuesday (Oct. 19, 1999) at Rowan Regional Medical Center, Salisbury, after a short illness.

Born March 20, 1923, in Rowan County, Mr. Rustin was a son of the late Susie Davis and Hubert Rustin. He attended Dunbar High School and retired from Boral (Isenhour) Brick &Tile. He was a member of Northeast Congregation of Jehovah’s Witnesses, Salisbury.

His first wife, Julie Evans Rustin, died Feb. 14, 1992.

Survivors include wife Josephine Roseboro Rustin; sons O.W. Rustin Jr., Mark Rustin, and Roy Lee Sims, all of Salisbury; stepsons Mark Jackson, Hamlet, and David C. Jackson, Wallkill, N.Y.; daughters Doris Rustin, East Spencer, and Rosemary Napper, Winston-Salem; stepdaughters Leah Jackson, Maxton, Joanna Jackson Brown, Salisbury, and Lois Bennett, Hamlet; brothers John L. Rustin Sr. and Hurbert Rustin Jr., both of East Spencer, and John Wesley Rustin, Salisbury; sisters Ruth Annie Duncan, East Spencer, and Ruby Wallace, Charlotte; nine grandchildren; 11 step-grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

Services: 3 p.m. Friday, Northeast Congregation of Jehovah’s Witnesses, conducted by Jerry Blackwell. Burial, Byers Cemetery.

Visitation: 2:30 p.m. Friday, Northeast Congregation.

James Smith

STATESVILLE — James Smith, 83, 422 Deaton St., died Monday (Oct. 18, 1999) at Iredell Memorial Hospital, after a period of declining health.

Born Jan. 31, 1916, in Davidson County, Mr. Smith was a son of the late Martha Easter and Andrew Smith. He attended Davidson County schools and was employed by Burlington Industries, where he was a furniture worker and machine operator. He attended Damascus Baptist Church.

His first wife, Doris Miller Smith, died in 1974. Sons Arthur William and Tommy Ray Smith also preceded him in death.

Survivors include wife Betty Shumaker Smith, whome he married in 1975, of the home; son James A. Smith, Salisbury; daughter Mildred “Midge” Brogdon, Lexington; stepsons Michael L. Wallace, Winston-Salem, and Dale L. Wallace, Harmony; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildre.

Services: 1:30 p.m. Thursday, Nicholson Funeral Home Chapel, conducted by the Rev. Dale L. Wallace. Burial, Lexington City Cemetery.

Visitation:7-8:30 tonight, Nicholson FuneralHome. At other times the family will be at the residence.

Thomas L. Vanderburg

Thomas L. Vanderburg, 72, Hefner VA Medical Center, died Tuesday (Oct. 19, 1999)at the center.

Born Jan. 15, 1927, in Kannapolis, Mr. Vanderburg was a son of the late Maggie and Fred Vanderburg. Educated in Cabarrus County, he was a veteran of the U.S. Navy and served during World War II.

He is survived by brother Clarence Vanderburg, Kannapolis.

Services:Graveside, 10 a.m. Thursday, National Cemetery, Salisbury, conducted by a VA Chaplain.

Visitation: None.
