Born June 24, 1923, in Rowan
County, Mr. Basinger was a son of the late Kate Brown and Homer Leander Basinger. Educated
in the Rowan County schools, Mr. Basinger retired from Cannon Mills after 40 years at
plant 6.
A lifelong member of Faith
Lutheran Church, Mr. Basinger was a former church council member, a member of Barger-Moose
Sunday school class, and a member Salisbury Moose Lodge, and Faith American Legion Post
327.
Survivors include wife Hazel
Vanderford Basinger, whom he married May 25, 1946; brother Voight Basinger, Salisbury;
sisters Arlene Basinger Haynes, Phyllis Basinger Beck, and Carol Basinger Edwards, all of
Faith.

Brown, 35, 135 Deal St., died Sunday (Oct. 17, 1999) at Rowan Regional Medical Center,
Salisbury, after a train accident.
Born April 8, 1964, in Rowan
County, Mr. Brown was a son of Carol Yon Wright, Kannapolis. A member of Concord Church of
God, Mr. Brown worked for KleenCare Systems, Kannapolis. He also worked for Interstate
Plumbing for three years.
Survivors, in addition to his
mother, include wife Diane Talley Brown; sons Jason Scott and Jamie Lee Brown, both of
Kannapolis; Nathaniel Brown, Concord, and David Veach, Indiana; daughter Tiffany Talley,
Concord; brothers Danny Wright, Kannapolis, and Chip Wright, Harrisburg; and grandmother
Billie Yon Thomas, Concord.

County, Mr. Furr was a son of the late Rosa Jane Furr and Marshall Lemuel Furr. Mr. Furr
was a self-employed carpenter, handling home repair. He was a U.S. Army veteran.

Bill Henderson, 65, 1435 Adams St., died Sunday (Oct. 17, 1999) at his
residence.
Born Aug. 8, 1934, in Spencer, Mr.
Henderson was a son of the late Elizabeth Henderson. A graduate of Dunbar High School,
East Spencer. A retired employee of Flowers Bakery Mr. Henderson was a member of Dorsett
Chapel United Church of Christ. He was a member of the deacon board, chairman of the
trustees board, gospel choir and male chorus, former member of the usher board, member of
the Spencer Senior Citizens Club, Spencers Church Council and a veteran of the U.S.
Army.

Hillard, 46, Salisbury, died Sunday (Oct. 17, 1999)at Davie County Hospital, Mocksville,
from injuries sustained in an automobile accident.
Born July 9, 1953, in Salisbury,
Mr. Hillard was a son of Connie Miller Hillard, Salisbury, and the late Charles Allen
Hillard.
Educated in Rowan County schools
he received his associate degree in law enforcement from Davidson County Community College
and an advanced law enforcement certificate from the state of North Carolina.
Beginning as a reservist for the
Rowan County Sheriffs Department in 1993, Mr. Hillard became a deputy in 1995. Prior
to that, he was employed by the Salisbury Police Department for 15 years. He was a member
of Bethel Lutheran Church and the Rowan County Peace Officers Association.
Survivors, in addition to his
mother, include wife Michele Nance Hillard, whom he married April 25, 1981; son Joseph A.
Hillard, of the home; daughter Elizabeth Claire Hillard, of the home; brothers Charles D.
and Billy R. Hillard, both of Salisbury.

Roy Lee Holcomb

77, 32034 Canton Road, died Sunday (Oct. 17, 1999) at Stanly Memorial Hospital.
Born April 8, 1922, in Calhoun,
Ga., Mr. Holcomb was a son of the late Oscar Lawrence and Ethel Chapman Holcomb. Retired
from Newport News Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Co., Mr. Holcomb was a member of Canton
Baptist Church.
He was a World War II Army veteran
serving tours in North Africa, Sicily, England and France, where he was wounded and
received the Purple Heart with numerous other medals. He was a member of the DAV.
He was preceded in death by his
first wife Ruby Colleen Smith.

Burris Holcomb; sons Tony Holcomb, Chesapeake, Va., and Billy Holcomb, Dayton, Texas;
daughter Pam Robinson, Wildwood, Ga.; stepdaughter Shelby Tucker, Badin; brother David

Concord, after five years of declining health and six weeks of serious illness.
Born Aug. 30, 1927, in Cleveland,
Ga., Mr. Pitchford was a son of the late Annie Mae Ward and Melton Lewis Pitchford. Mr.
Pitchford was employed by Cannon Mills Co. Plant 4 card room for many years until his
retirement in 1977 due to disability.
Survivors include wife Elizabeth
Booth Pitchford; stepsons Ray Eugene Austin, Charlotte, and Earl Edward Austin, Matthews;
stepdaughter Patricia Yvonne Austin, Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; brother Dwight Pitchford,
Rockingham; sisters Lola Mae Hawkins and Lorene Coffey, both of Forest City; and four
grandchildren.

Mrs. Shoaf was a member of Good Shepherd Episcopal Church, an honorary member of Cooleemee
Senior Citizens, a member of Senior Rhythm Band, and a volunteer at Davie Senior Center in
the nutrition department.
Her husband, Sherman Shoaf,
preceded her in death.
Survivors include son Defoy Shoaf,
Mocksville; daughter Elizabeth Shoaf, Grapevine, Texas; sister Lila Hancock; four

County, Mrs. Wallace was a daughter of the late Maggie Lou Schenck and Albert Wallace
Stirewalt. Educated in Rowan County Mrs. Wallace retired from Cannon Mills. She was a
member of Jackson Park Pentecostal Holiness Church.
Her first husband, Claude Swing,
preceded her in death.
Survivors include husband Joseph
B. Wallace; stepsons Albert J. Wallace, Salisbury, Charles T. Wallace, East Spencer, and

retired founder, owner and operator of Watkins Music Company Inc., Mr. Watkins was a
member of First Lutheran Church.
His wife, Mabel Albright Watkins,
died Sept. 17, 1999.
