Edith Auerback

Edith Auerback, 77, 6850 Faith Road, China Grove, died Monday (Oct. 18, 1999) at Rowan Regional Medical Center.

Linn-Honeycutt Funeral Home is charge. The family will be at the home of a daughter, Darlene Lopez, 105 Quail Drive, Salisbury.

 

Ferrell Brown Basinger

Ferrell Brown Basinger, 76, Salisbury, died Monday (Oct. 18, 1999) at Rowan Regional Medical Center.

Born June 24, 1923, in Rowan County, Mr. Basinger was a son of the late Kate Brown and Homer Leander Basinger. Educated in the Rowan County schools, Mr. Basinger retired from Cannon Mills after 40 years at plant 6.

A lifelong member of Faith Lutheran Church, Mr. Basinger was a former church council member, a member of Barger-Moose Sunday school class, and a member Salisbury Moose Lodge, and Faith American Legion Post 327.

Survivors include wife Hazel Vanderford Basinger, whom he married May 25, 1946; brother Voight Basinger, Salisbury; sisters Arlene Basinger Haynes, Phyllis Basinger Beck, and Carol Basinger Edwards, all of Faith.

Services:3 p.m. Wednesday, Faith Lutheran Church, conducted by the Rev. Keith Copeland and the Rev. Judy Lewis Copeland, co-pastors. Burial, church cemetery; military rites by Faith American Legion Post 327.

Visitation: 7-9 tonight, Powles Funeral Home, Rockwell.

Timothy Scott Brown

CONCORD — Timothy Scott Brown, 35, 135 Deal St., died Sunday (Oct. 17, 1999) at Rowan Regional Medical Center, Salisbury, after a train accident.

Born April 8, 1964, in Rowan County, Mr. Brown was a son of Carol Yon Wright, Kannapolis. A member of Concord Church of God, Mr. Brown worked for KleenCare Systems, Kannapolis. He also worked for Interstate Plumbing for three years.

Survivors, in addition to his mother, include wife Diane Talley Brown; sons Jason Scott and Jamie Lee Brown, both of Kannapolis; Nathaniel Brown, Concord, and David Veach, Indiana; daughter Tiffany Talley, Concord; brothers Danny Wright, Kannapolis, and Chip Wright, Harrisburg; and grandmother Billie Yon Thomas, Concord.

Services:4 p.m. Wednesday, Whitley’s Funeral Home Chapel, Kannapolis, conducted by the Rev. Tim Howard. Burial, Carolina Memorial Park, Kannapolis.

Visitation:7-9 tonight at the funeral home.

 

Louis Elwood Furr

ALBEMARLE — Louis Elwood Furr, 64, 32024 Old Parker Road, died Sunday (Oct. 17, 1999)at Stanly Manor, Albemarle.

Born Feb. 5, 1935, in Stanly County, Mr. Furr was a son of the late Rosa Jane Furr and Marshall Lemuel Furr. Mr. Furr was a self-employed carpenter, handling home repair. He was a U.S. Army veteran.

Survivors include wife Alice Mae Furr; stepdaughter Wanda King; sisters Vera Helms, Nellie Huneycutt, Ruby McIntyre and Lula Morton, all of Albemarle; and one granddaughter.

Services: 11 a.m. Wednesday, Hartsell Funeral Home, Albemarle, conducted by the Rev. Mitchell D. Cook. Burial, Bear Creek Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery, Albemarle.

Visitation: 7-9 tonight at the funeral home. At other times the family will be at the residence.

 

Clyde ‘Bill’ Henderson

SPENCER — Clyde “Bill” Henderson, 65, 1435 Adams St., died Sunday (Oct. 17, 1999) at his residence.

Born Aug. 8, 1934, in Spencer, Mr. Henderson was a son of the late Elizabeth Henderson. A graduate of Dunbar High School, East Spencer. A retired employee of Flowers Bakery Mr. Henderson was a member of Dorsett Chapel United Church of Christ. He was a member of the deacon board, chairman of the trustees board, gospel choir and male chorus, former member of the usher board, member of the Spencer Senior Citizens Club, Spencer’s Church Council and a veteran of the U.S. Army.

Survivors include wife Adlonia Montgomery Henderson; daughter Pamela H. Shaffer, Salisbury; foster daughter Ella L. Montgomery, New York, N.Y.; and sister Dorothy Colbert, Salisbury.

Services:11:30 p.m. Thursday, Dorsett Chapel United Church of Christ, Spencer, conducted by the Rev. Dr. Larry Ellis. Burial, National Cemetery, Salisbury, with military rites by Rowan Veterans Council.

Visitation:7-8 p.m. Wednesday, A.R. Kelsey Memorial Chapel, Noble and Kelsey Funeral Home.

 

Richard ‘Rick’ Hillard

Richard Allen “Rick” Hillard, 46, Salisbury, died Sunday (Oct. 17, 1999)at Davie County Hospital, Mocksville, from injuries sustained in an automobile accident.

Born July 9, 1953, in Salisbury, Mr. Hillard was a son of Connie Miller Hillard, Salisbury, and the late Charles Allen Hillard.

Educated in Rowan County schools he received his associate degree in law enforcement from Davidson County Community College and an advanced law enforcement certificate from the state of North Carolina.

Beginning as a reservist for the Rowan County Sheriff’s Department in 1993, Mr. Hillard became a deputy in 1995. Prior to that, he was employed by the Salisbury Police Department for 15 years. He was a member of Bethel Lutheran Church and the Rowan County Peace Officers Association.

Survivors, in addition to his mother, include wife Michele Nance Hillard, whom he married April 25, 1981; son Joseph A. Hillard, of the home; daughter Elizabeth Claire Hillard, of the home; brothers Charles D. and Billy R. Hillard, both of Salisbury.

Services:11 a.m. Wednesday, St. John’s Lutheran Church, conducted by the Rev. Thomas P. Clements, pastor, SacredHeart Catholic Church; the Rev. Mark S. Reed, pastor, Bethel Lutheran Church; and the Rev. Morris Boyd, pastor, St. Francis of Assisi, Franklin.

Visitation:Prayer service, 7 tonight, Summersett Funeral Home Memorial Chapel, followed by visitation until 9 p.m. At other times the family will be at the residence of his mother, Connie M. Hillard.

Roy Lee Holcomb

ALBEMARLE — Roy Lee Holcomb, 77, 32034 Canton Road, died Sunday (Oct. 17, 1999) at Stanly Memorial Hospital.

Born April 8, 1922, in Calhoun, Ga., Mr. Holcomb was a son of the late Oscar Lawrence and Ethel Chapman Holcomb. Retired from Newport News Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Co., Mr. Holcomb was a member of Canton Baptist Church.

He was a World War II Army veteran serving tours in North Africa, Sicily, England and France, where he was wounded and received the Purple Heart with numerous other medals. He was a member of the DAV.

He was preceded in death by his first wife Ruby Colleen Smith.

Survivors include wife Gladys Burris Holcomb; sons Tony Holcomb, Chesapeake, Va., and Billy Holcomb, Dayton, Texas; daughter Pam Robinson, Wildwood, Ga.; stepdaughter Shelby Tucker, Badin; brother David Holcomb, Albemarle; sisters Clara Roberts, Dixie Thorpe and Kathleen Poplin, all of Albemarle; nine grandchildren; one step-grandson; and two step-great-grandchildren.

Services: 2 p.m. Wednesday, Stanly Memorial Chapel, conducted by the Rev. Les Schofield and the Rev. Sid Martin. Burial, Canton Baptist Church Cemetery, with military rites by Stanly County DAV Ritual Team.

Visitation: 7-9 tonight at the funeral home.

Lewis Melton Pitchford

KANNAPOLIS — Lewis Melton Pitchford, 71, 800 McDaniel Park, died Monday (Oct. 18, 1999) at NorthEast Medical Center, Concord, after five years of declining health and six weeks of serious illness.

Born Aug. 30, 1927, in Cleveland, Ga., Mr. Pitchford was a son of the late Annie Mae Ward and Melton Lewis Pitchford. Mr. Pitchford was employed by Cannon Mills Co. Plant 4 card room for many years until his retirement in 1977 due to disability.

Survivors include wife Elizabeth Booth Pitchford; stepsons Ray Eugene Austin, Charlotte, and Earl Edward Austin, Matthews; stepdaughter Patricia Yvonne Austin, Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; brother Dwight Pitchford, Rockingham; sisters Lola Mae Hawkins and Lorene Coffey, both of Forest City; and four grandchildren.

Services:2 p.m. Thursday, Whitley’s Funeral Home Chapel, conducted by the Rev. Buddy Boone. Burial, West Lawn Memorial Park, China Grove.

Visitation: 7-9 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. At other times, the family will be at the residence.

 

Nannie Lee Brown Russell

KANNAPOLIS — Nannie Lee Brown Russell, 89, 6451 Charlie Walker Road, died Monday (Oct. 18, 1999) at her home.

Born Sept. 25, 1910, in Iredell County, Mrs. Russell was a daughter of Nancy Hinson and John Edgar Davidson Brown. She was a member of Bethpage Presbyterian Church and taught Sunday school for 50 years.

Her husband, Brown B. Russell, preceded her in death.

Survivors include son Barry Russell, Kannapolis; two grandchildren; and two great granchildren.

Services:11 a.m. Wednesday, Bethpage Presbyterian Church, Kannapolis, conducted by the Rev. Steve Mowery and the Rev. Keith Grogg. Burial, Carolina Memorial Park, Kannapolis.

EAST SPENCER — O.W. “Dub”

Rustin, 76, 124 Correll St., died Tuesday (Oct. 19, 1999) at Rowan Regional Medical Center after a short illness.

Virginia Elizabeth Shoaf

COOLEEMEE — Virginia Elizabeth Shoaf, 85, Watt Street, died Thursday (Oct. 14, 1999) at her residence.

Born March 28, 1914, in Davie County, Mrs. Shoaf was a daughter of the late Mary Taylor and John Howerton. A homemaker, Mrs. Shoaf was a member of Good Shepherd Episcopal Church, an honorary member of Cooleemee Senior Citizens, a member of Senior Rhythm Band, and a volunteer at Davie Senior Center in the nutrition department.

Her husband, Sherman Shoaf, preceded her in death.

Survivors include son Defoy Shoaf, Mocksville; daughter Elizabeth Shoaf, Grapevine, Texas; sister Lila Hancock; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Services: 11 a.m. Friday, Good Shepherd Episcopal Church, Cooleemee, conducted by the Rev. Edwin Bailey. The body will be cremated. Burial, Legion Memorial Park.

 

Lora Stirewalt Wallace

KANNAPOLIS — Lora Pearl Stirewalt Wallace, 81, 1505 Cora Street, died Monday (Oct. 18, 1999) at Genesis Eldercare.

Born March 12, 1918, in Rowan County, Mrs. Wallace was a daughter of the late Maggie Lou Schenck and Albert Wallace Stirewalt. Educated in Rowan County Mrs. Wallace retired from Cannon Mills. She was a member of Jackson Park Pentecostal Holiness Church.

Her first husband, Claude Swing, preceded her in death.

Survivors include husband Joseph B. Wallace; stepsons Albert J. Wallace, Salisbury, Charles T. Wallace, East Spencer, and David R. Wallace, Henderson; four step-grandchildren; and two step-great-grandchildren.

Services:Graveside, 11 a.m. Thursday, West Lawn Memorial Park, conducted by the Rev. Ralph Adams.

Visitation: 7-8:30 p.m. Wednesday, Linn-Honeycutt Funeral Home, China Grove. At other times the family will be at the home of stepson, Albert J. Wallace, 1330 Old Cress Road, Salisbury.

 

Aaron Leo Watkins

ALBEMARLE — Aaron Leo Watkins, 86, 49461 Buck Drive, died Sunday (Oct. 17, 1999) at Stanly Memorial Hospital.The funeral was today.

Born Sept. 7, 1913, in Rowan County, Mr. Watkins was a son of the late Charles Ernest and Lissie Mae Grubb Watkins. The retired founder, owner and operator of Watkins Music Company Inc., Mr. Watkins was a member of First Lutheran Church.

His wife, Mabel Albright Watkins, died Sept. 17, 1999.

Survivors include son James R. Watkins, Albemarle; daughters Diane W. Earnhardt, Belmont, Calif., and Sally W. Dick, Albemarle; nine grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

Services: 11 a.m. today, First Lutheran Church, conducted by the Rev. John Futterer and the Rev. Heidi Sommers. Burial, Fairview Cemetery.
