Roy Bennette Bass

CONCORD — Roy Bennette Bass, 88, 43 Plott Drive, died Sunday (Oct. 17, 199) at NorthEast Medical Center after two months of illness.

Born March 26, 1911, in Cabarrus County, Mr. Bass was a son of the late Marshall and Dothie Furr Bass. Educated in the Cabarrus County schools, he retired in 1975 from Cannon Mills card room after 45 years. A U.S. Army Air Corps veteran, he served in England during World War II. He was a member of Young Memorial Baptist Church and Improved Order of Redmen.

Survivors include wife Lenna Hinson Bass; son Roy D. Bass, Kannapolis; brother Alred Bass, Charlotte; sister Josephine Walters, Orlando,Fla.; three grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Services: 3 p.m. Tuesday,Whitley’s Funeral Home Chapel, Kannapolis, conducted by the Rev. A.G. Ferris and the Rev. Jeff Smith. Burial, Carolina Memorial Park, Kannapolis.

Visitation: 1:30-3 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

 

Jack Carter

Jack Carter, 72, Gold Hill, died Friday (Oct. 15, 1999) at his residence.

Born May 20, 1927, in Aldrich, Ala., Mr. Carter was the son of the late Martha Wall and James Thomas Carter.

Educated in the Rowan County schools and at Rowan-Cabarrus Community College, Mr. Carter retired from construction and carpentry work. Hebuilt apartment complexes.

He was a member of Rockwell VFW 1134, Immanuel Lutheran Church and Rowan County Veterans Council. He was past quarter master with VFW and served with the U.S. Navy during World War II.

His daughter, Carol Carter Barnhardt, died March 23, 1988.

Survivors include wife Sarah “Ceola” Fink Carter, whom he married Feb. 22, 1946; sons Thomas Michael and Jack Dale Carter, both of the home; daughters Glenda Carter Trexler, Gold Hill, and Sarah Carter Stevens, Wilmington; brothers Frank Carter, Concord, and Morris Carter, Kannapolis; sisters Lynn Sloan, McLean, Va., and Ruth Crosswy, Holiday, Fla.; six grandchildren; and one great grandchild.

Services: 2 p.m. today, Immanuel Lutheran Church, conducted by the Rev. Bruce Sheeks. Burial West Lawn Memorial Park, China Grove; military rites by Rowan County Veterans Council.

James C. Gheen
Mildred F. Gheen

KANNAPOLIS — James Coleman Gheen, 72, and Mildred Franks Gheen, 74, 621 N. Walnut St., died Saturday (Oct. 16, 1999).

Born Oct. 28, 1926, in Kannapolis, Mr. Gheen was a son of the late Berdie Eletha Moore and Eashmon Worth Gheen.

His wife, Mildred F. Gheen, was born Feb. 4, 1925, in Glenville. She was a daughter of the late Martha Elizabeth Bentley and Leroy Filmore Franks.

Both were weavers at Cannon Mills, retiring in 1987. They were active members of Lane Street Baptist Church and were in the Senior Choir.

Mr. Gheen’s survivors include daughters Becky Ann Gheen Sutherland, Kannapolis, and Wanda Lynn Gheen McDonald, Concord; stepson Larry Wayne Cline, Virginia Beach, Va.; brothers Harold D. Gheen, Kannapolis, and Claude W. Gheen, Waterloo, S.C.; and a number of grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Gheen’s survivors include son Larry Wayne Cline, Virginia Beach, Va.; stepdaughters Becky Ann Gheen Sutherland, Kannapolis, and Wanda Lynn Gheen McDonald, Concord; sister Dorothy Mae Bryson, Asheville; brothers Eugene Thomas Franks, Hendersonville, and Fred L. Franks, Ellenboro; and a number of grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Services: 2 p.m. Tuesday, Lane Street Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Gene Edwards and the Rev. Todd Galloway. Burial, Westlawn Memorial Park.

Visitation: 7:30-8:30 tonight, Lady’s Funeral Home. At other times the family will be at the home of Becky Sutherland, 1009 Mable Ave., Kannapolis.

 

Bill Henderson

SPENCER — Clyde “Bill” Henderson, 65, 1435 Adams St., died Sunday (Oct. 17, 1999) at his home after a sudden illness.

Born Aug. 8, 1934, in Rowan County, he was a son of the late Elizabeth Henderson. He was a graduate of Dunbar High School, East Spencer, and was retired from Flowers Bakery. A member of Dorsett Chapel United Church of Christ, he had served on the deacon board, as chairman of the trustee board and was a member of the gospel choir and male chorus. He was a former member of the usher board , the Spencer Senior Citizen’s Club and the Spencer Church Council. He was a veteran of the U. S. Army.

Survivors include wife Adlonia Montgomery Henderson; foster daughters Pamela H. Shaffer, Salisbury, and Ella L. Montgomery, New York, N.Y.; sister Dorothy Colbert, Salisbury; and two grandchildren.

Noble & Kelsey Funeral Home is in charge.

 

Nellie Winecoff McGee

Nellie Winecoff McGee, 97, died Saturday (Oct.. 16, 1999) at Rowan Regional Medical Center after six weeks of declining health.

Born Aug. 31, 1902, in Mecklenburg County, Mrs. McGee was a daughter of the late Noah and Harriet Hutchinson Winecoff.

Mrs. McGee was educated in Rowan County schools and was a homemaker. She was the oldest member of Salem Lutheran Church.

Her husband, Laddie Ray McGee, died Dec. 11. 1976, and a son, Keith Ray McGee, died Oct. 1, 1991.

Survivors include sons Billie W. McGee of Charlotte and Paul H. McGee of Salisbury; daughters Helen M. Gordon and Ruth M. Webb, both of Salisbury; eight grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

Services: 2 p.m. Tuesday, Salem Lutheran Church, conducted by the Rev. Clarence E. Sifford. Burial, Salem Lutheran Church Cemetery.

Visitation: 7-8:30 tonight, Summersett Funeral Home.

Edna Arnold Oakley

LEXINGTON — Edna Madeline Arnold Oakley, 72, Brian Center, Lexington, died Sunday (Oct. 17, 1999) at Lexington Memorial Hospital.

Born March 26, 1927, in Grayson County, Va., Mrs. Oakley was a daughter of the late Katherine “Kate” Elizabeth Lovell and Boyd Theodore Arnold. Mrs. Oakley was formerly employed by Buena Vista Nursing Home and was a member of First United Methodist Church of Fries, Va. She was president of the resident council at the Brian Center.

Her husband, James Oakley, died Sept. 21, 1996.

Survivors include daughter Frankie Henderson, Charlotte; son the Rev. Jay Eastridge, Sylva; five grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Services: 2 p.m. Wednesday, Timeberlake Chapel of Piedmont Funeral Home, conducted by the Rev. Clyde Akers and the Rev. Myers Tilley.

Visitation: 7-9 p.m. Tuesdayat the funeral home. At other times the family will be at the home of Mary Moore, 189 Curtis Drive, Lexington.

Pauline Baker Plyler

SPENCER — Pauline Baker Plyler, 94, formerly of Whitehead Avenue, died Saturday (Oct. 16, 1999) at Spencer Health Care after 1 1/2 years of declining health.

Born Sept. 15, 1905, in Rowan County, Mrs. Plyler was a daughter of the late Charlie Mike and Sanoria Todd Baker. She was a homemaker. An active member of First Baptist Church and the Good Times Club, she worked in various phases of the church and with the nursery for many years.

Her husband, Hubert Daniel Plyler, died in November 1968.

Survivors include daughters Nancy P. Blackwell and Mrs. Billy R. (Betty)Watkins, both of Spencer, and Mrs. Phillip I. (Polly) Carlton, Salisbury; sister Frances Toole, Tampa, Fla.; five grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Services: 3 p.m. Tuesday, First Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Franklin Myers. Burial, Chestnut Hill Cemetery, Salisbury.

Visitation: 7-8:30 tonight, Summersett Funeral Home, Salisbury.

Lillian Burris Russell

CHINA GROVE — Lillian Burris Russell, 90, 1040 Highway 152 W., died Monday (Oct. 18, 1999) at NorthEast Medical Center, Concord.

Born June 16, 1909, in Stanly County, she was a daughter of the late Reuben Taw and Eunice Little Burris. Retired from Cannon Mills Company, she attended China Grove First Baptist Church.

Her husband, Delma John Russell, died Jan. 28, 1999.

Survivors include stepsons John J. Russell, China Grove, and Floyd Russell, Asheville; brother Clinton Burris, Oakboro; sister Estelle Samuels, High Point; five stepgrandchildren; and six stepgreat-grandchildren.

Services: 4 p.m. Tuesday, First Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. David Phelps, pastor. Burial, West Lawn Memorial Park Mausoleum.

Visitation: 3-3:45 p.m. Tuesday, Linn-Honeycutt Funeral Home, China Grove. At other times the family will be at the home of stepson John J. Russell, 3925 Highway 152 W.

Sheila Ann Odom Smith

ALBEMARLE — Sheila Ann Odom Smith, 45, 1110 Smith St., died Saturday (Oct. 16, 1999) at Presbyterian Hospital, Charlotte.

Born April 7, 1954, in Albemarle, Mrs.Smith was a daughter of and Willard Robert and Shirley Ann Odom, both of Albemarle. She was an honor graduate of Stanly Community College, where she received an applied science degree. She was a member of Phi Theta Kappa Society.

A certified occupational therapist assistant, she was last employed by First Health-Montgomery Memorial Hospital. She was an active member of First Baptist Church and its Sunday school.

Survivors, in addition to her parents, include husband Jeffrey Douglas Smith; sons Benjamin E. Smith, Western Carolina University, and Brian J. Smith, Charlotte; and daughters Elizabeth C. and Katherine “Katie” S. Smith, both of Albemarle.

Services: 2 p.m. Tuesday, First Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Harold McDonald. Burial, Anderson Grove Baptist Church cemetery.

Visitation: 7-9 tonight, Hartsell Funeral Home. At other times the family will be at the home on Smith Street.

Letha ‘Pete’ Waller

KANNAPOLIS — Letha Nolen “Pete” Waller, 75, 7845 Howard Ave., formerly of South Rose Avenue, died Sunday (Oct. 17, 1999) st the home of a niece, Vicky L. Moss of Howard Street.

Born Feb. 29, 1924, in Kannapolis, Miss Waller was a daughter of the late Sanford and Minnie Ervin Waller. She retired several years ago from Cannon Mills Plant 1 No. 7 spinning room after 43 years.

Survivors, in addition to her niece, include sister Ada Perkins, Kannapolis; and brother Earnest Waller, Kannapolis.

Services: 11 a.m. Tuesday, Lady’s Funeral Home Chapel, conducted by the Rev. Sonny Waller. Burial, Carolina Memorial Park.

Visitation: 10-11 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. At other times the family will be at the home.

Memorials: Donor’s choice.
