Nathan G. Archer

COOLEMEE — Nathan G. Archer, 66, of 236 Center St., died Saturday (Oct. 16, 1999) at the Presbyterian Hospital in Charlotte. The body will remain at Eaton Funerla Home in Mocksville pending completion of arrangements.

 

Jack Carter

GOLD HILL — Jack Carter, 72, died at home Friday (Oct. 15, 1999). He had been in declining health.

He was born May 20, 1927, in Aldrich, Ala., the son of Martha Wall Carter and James Thomas Carter, who preceded him in death.

He was educated in the Rowan County Schools and Rowan County Community College.

Mr. Carter was retired from construction and carpentry work, and he built apartment complexes. He was a member of the Rockwell V.F.W. and Immanuel Lutheran Church. He was Past Quartermaster of the Rowan County Veterans Council, and served in the U.S. Navy during W.W. II.

Mr. Carter was married to Sarah “Ceola” Fink Carter, Feb. 22, 1946, who survives, along with two daughters, Glenda Carter Trexler, Gold Hill and Sara Carter Stevens, Wilmington. Two brothers, Frank Carter of Concord and Morris Carter of Kannapolis also survive, along with sisters Lynn Sloan of McLean, Va., and Ruth Crossy, Holiday, Fla.

Six grandchildren and one great-grandchild also survive.

A daughter, Carol Carter Bernhardt, died March 23, 1988.

Services: 2 p.m. Monday, Immanuel Lutheran Church. Burial West Lawn Memorial Park, China Grove.

Visitation:: 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday, Powles Funeral Home, Rockwell.

Beulah Baggerly Cook

KANNAPOLIS — Beulah Baggerly Cook, 86, 2013 West “C” Street, died Friday (Oct. 15, 1999) at home after a brief illness.

She was born May 21, 1913, in Cabarrus County to William Marshall Baggerly and Carol Belle Frye Baggerly, both deceased.

Mrs. Cook’s husband, Arnold Eugene Cook, died in 1979. She is survived by: sons Douglas Cook, Harrisburg, N.C.; Joe Cook, Stone Mountain, Ga.; Larry Cook, Winston-Salem; Gordon Cook, Manassas, Va.; Dale Cook, Kannapolis; and daughters Phyllis Wells and Lynne Freeland, both of Kannapolis.

Mrs. Cook had 21 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren.

She was employed for many years with Cannon Mills in the weaver room and retired in 1975. She was a member of Bethpage United Methodist Church.

Services: 11 a.m. Monday, Bethpage United Methodist Church, the Rev. Randy Foster in charge. The body will be at the church 10 to 11 a.m. Monday. Burial will be in Bethpage United Methodist Church Cemetery.

Visitation: 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Whitley’s Funeral Home.

Gladys Black Macklin

Gladys B. Macklin, formerly of Salisbury, died Wednesday (Oct. 13, 1999)after a 15-year struggle with Alzheimer’s.

Born Aug. 18, 1916, Mrs. Macklinwas a graduate of Thomasville High School. She attended the University of North Carolina, Greensboro, where she majored in music. After graduating Mrs. Macklin’s first job was teaching music in a high school orchestra in Salisbury. Under Mrs. Macklin’s leadership the school won a statewide contest for high school orchestras.

 

Bertie Smith Hendren

MOORESVILLE — Bertie Smith Hendren, 83, Highway 152 W., died Saturday (Oct. 16, 1999) in Lake Norman Regional Medical Center.

She was born March 7, 1916, in Rowan County, the daughter of the late Charlie Lee and Dora Mae Fulham Smith. Shed was preceded in death by her husband, William Edmund Hendren, and three brothers, Ralph, Daniel and Charlie Lee Smith Jr.

She was a retired employee of Uniglass Industries, Statesville. She was a member of Jones Memorial United Methodist Church and a member of the United Methodist Women and the Lorena Kelly Sunday School Class.

Survivors include: two children, Judy H. Miller of Salisbury and Sandra Hendren of Wenham, Mass.; one sister, Mabel S. Hubbad of Mooresville, and two grandhchildren.

Services: Tuesday, Oct. 19., 11 a.m., Jones Memorial United Methodist Church, the Rev. Leo Fair officiating. Burial will follow in Greenlawn Cemetery at China Grove.

Visitation: Monday, Oct. 18, 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., Calvin Funeral Home, Mooresville.

Memorials: Jones Memorial United Methodist Church, 648 W. Park Ave., Mooresville, N.C. 28115.

Arrangements are in charge of Cavin Funeral Home, Mooresville.

 

Walter “Mac” Otis Harris McClary

ROCKWELL — Walter “Mac” Otis Harris McClary, 79, died Saturday (Oct. 16, 1999) at the V.A. Medical Center in Salisbury after a period of declining health.

He as born June 22, 1920, in York, S.C., the son of Della Surratt Cranford and John Cranford, both of whom preceded him in death.

Mr. McClary was educated in Davidson County schools. He retired from Dixie Furniture in Lexington after 41 years of service.

He was a member of the Rockwell United Methodist Church, American Legion Post 112, a Veteran of WWII in the U.S. Army, during which time he fought in the Battle of the Bulge and received two purple hearts and a silver star. He also fought in the European Theater.

On Sept. 7, 1951, Mr. McClary married Edna Allen McClary, who survives.

Also surviving are: sons Otis McClary of Rockwell and Steve McClary of Salisbury; daughter Debby Shinn of Kannapolis; brothers J.W. Cranford and Walter Lee Cranford, both of Denton; sisters MaryMae Dinkins of Richmond, Va., and Alice Bolton of Misenheimer.

Services: 11 a.m. Monday, Rockwell United Methodist Church, the Rev. Kermit Shoaf and the Rev. John Gottula, pastor, officiating. Burial in Brookhill Memorial Gardens.

Visitation: 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Sunday, Powles Funeral Home. The body will lie in state 30 minutes before the service.

Pauline Baker Plyler

Pauline Baker Plyler, 94, 1404 S. Salisbury Ave., Spencer, and formerly of Whitehead Ave., Spencer, died Saturday (Oct. 16, 1999) at Spencer Helath Care Center. Mrs. Plyler will remain at the Summersett Funeral Home pending completion of funeral arrangements.

 

Sheila Odom Smith

ALBEMARLE — Sheila Odom Smith, 45, 1110 Smith St., died Saturday (Oct. 16, 1999) at Presbyterian Hospital. Funeral arrangements are incomplete at this time. Further arrangements will be announced.

 

Nellie Winecoff McGee

Nellie Winecoff McGee, 97, died Saturday (Oct.. 16, 1999) at Rowan Regional Medical Center after being in declining health for six weeks.

She was born Aug. 31, 1902, in Mecklenburg County, the daughter of the late Noah Winecoff and Harriet Hutchinson Winecoff.

Mrs. Winecoff was educated in Rowan County schools and was a homemaker. She was the oldest member of Salem Lutheran Church.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Laddie Ray McGee on Dec. 11. 1976, and a son, Keith Ray McGee, on Oct. 1, 1991.

Surviving are: sons Billie W. McGee of Charlotte and Paul H. McGee of Salisbury; daughters Helen Gordon and Ruth Webb, both of Salisbury.

Services: 2 p.m. Tuesday, Salem Lutheran Church, the Rev. Clarence E. Sifford presiding. Burial in Salem Lutheran Church Cemetery.

Visitation: 7-8:30 p.m. Monday, Summersett Funeral Home.

Memorials: Salem Lutheran Church, 5080 Sherrills Ford Road, Salisbury 28147.
