ALBEMARLE — Jean Edwards Dennis, 61, 411 Park Ridge Road, died Thursday (Oct. 14, 1999) at Stanly Memorial Hospital.

CHINA GROVE — Vallie Estes, 88, Kannapolis, formerly of China Grove, died Friday (Oct. 15, 1999) at Big Elm Retirement Center, Kannapolis.

Arvilee Patterson Gaither

Arvilee Patterson Gaither, 74, 1508 N. Shaver St., died Wednesday (Oct. 13, 1999) at Rowan Regional Medical Center.

Edward William Hunt, 65, Salisbury, died Friday (Oct. 15, 1999) at his home.

Foy Leander Icard

KANNAPOLIS — The funeral will be Saturday for Foy Leander Icard, 89, formerly of 102 Cedar Ave., who died Thursday (Oct. 14, 1999) at Transitional Health Services.

Born Sept. 20, 1910, in Hudson, Mr. Icard was a son of the late Robert Winslow and Carrie Miller Icard. He retired in 1975 after 48 years as an overseer from Cannon Mills plant 1 No. 7 card room. A member of North Kannapolis Baptist Church, he was a deacon and worked with the Boy Scouts for many years. He was also a member of Cannon Memorial Masonic Lodge 626.

His wife of 68 years, Hazel Jenkins Icard, preceded him in death.

Survivors include son Raymond Icard, Newburg, Ind., and Jim Icard, Kannapolis; sisterMrs. Henry (Sue)Agner, Hudson; brother Wilson Icard, Kannapolis; five grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Services: Graveside, 10 a.m. Saturday, Carolina Memorial Park; service, 11 a.m., Whitley’s Funeral Home Chapel, conducted by the Rev. Coy Privette.

Visitation: After the service in the chapel foyer of the funeral home.

Dorothy Cadell Ingram

KANNAPOLIS — Private funeral services will be held at a later date for Dorothy Cadell Ingram, 75, formerly of 927 S. Juniper St., who died Wednesday (Oct. 13, 1999) at Autumn Care of Salisbury.

Born Jan. 20, 1924, in Carthage, Mrs. Ingram was a daughter of the late Maudie Luciah and Florrie Muse Cadell. A member of West Point Baptist Church, she retired from Cannon Mills Co. sewing room.

Survivors include sons Charles R. and Michael R. Ingram, both of Kannapolis; brother Royal G. Cadell, Germany; sister Louise Reese, Kannapolis; one grandchild; and two great-grandchildren.

F.E. ‘Ike’ Isenhour

KANNAPOLIS — Floyd E. “Ike” Isenhour, 70, 1508 Oakwood Ave., died Thursday (Oct. 14, 1999) at NorthEast Medical Center, Concord.

Wiley Lee Kluttz

Wiley Lee Kluttz, 101, Salisbury, died Thursday (Oct. 14, 1999) at Rowan Regional Medical Center after a period of declining health.

Born July 28, 1898, in Rowan County, Mr. Kluttz was a son of the late Albert Thornton and Mary Jane Ribelin Kluttz. Educated in the Rowan County schools, he was a sawmill worker, farmer, tire recapper and a barber. He had worked at North Carolina Finishing Co. and retired from Carolina Maid. A member of Faith Lutheran Church, he taught Sunday school for over 70 years at St. Matthew’s Lutheran, Organ Lutheran and Faith Lutheran churches. He was active in church work throughout his life and a lifelong member of Lutheran Brotherhood.

His first wife, Mary Kale Eagle Kluttz, died Nov. 8, 1968. He was also preceded in death by a son, Keith Kluttz, and a daughter, Zelma K. Foster.

Survivors include wife Beulah Lingle Fesperman Kluttz, whom he married Oct. 10, 1976; daughters Bernita K. Abernathy and Roberta K. Basinger, both of Salisbury; stepson Marcelle Fesperman, Salisbury; stepdaughter Elaine Thomas, Salisbury; eight grandchildren; and a number of great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

Services: 2 p.m. Saturday,Faith Lutheran Church, conducted by Keith and Judy Copeland, co-pastors. Burial, Organ Lutheran Church cemetery.

Visitation: 7-8:30 tonight, Powles Funeral Home, Rockwell. At other times the family will be at the home of daughter Bernita K. Abernathy, Salisbury.

Mary Alexander Martin

MOORESVILLE — Mary Alexander Martin, 80, Faith Road, died Thursday (Oct. 14, 1999) at Lake Norman Regional Medical Center.

Born April 13, 1919, in Iredell County, Mrs. Martin was a daughter of the late John Lafayette and Nannie Blackwelder Alexander. She worked for Burlington Industries for 24 years and later retired after 18 years from Davidson College laundry. She was a member of Shearer PresbyterianChurch.

Her husband, Smiley Wilson Martin, preceded her in death.

Survivors include sons Edwin, John and Gene Martin, all of Mooresville, and Al Martin of Georgia; sister Janie A. Brown, Mooresville; five grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Services: 11 a.m. Saturday, Shearer Presbyterian Church, conducted by the Rev. Lonnie Barnes. Burial, church cemetery.

Visitation: 6:30-8:30 tonight, Cavin Funeral Home.

Eula Honeycutt Meismer

CHINA GROVE — Eula Honeycutt Meismer, 87, Five Forks Community, died Thursday (Oct. 14, 1999) at Rowan Regional Medical Center, Salisbury.

Born Aug. 22, 1912, in Davie County, Mrs. Meismer was a daughter of the late G.W. and Ollie Belle Nanny Honeycutt. Educated in the Iredell County schools, she retired from CannonMills Plant 8. She was a member of First Methodist Church.

Her husband, Earl Edward Meismer, died in 1966.

Survivors include son JimmyF. Meismer, Salisbury; daughter Mary Emily Byrd, Salisbury; two grandchildren; one step-grandchild; two great-grandchildren; and one step-great-grandchild.

Services: Graveside, 11 a.m. Saturday, West Lawn Memorial Park, conducted by Dr. Donald Godfrey and the Rev. James Faggart.

Visitation: 7-8:30 tonight, Linn-Honeycutt Funeral Home, China Grove. At other times the family will be at the home of son JimmyF. Meismer, 1055 Summer Lane, Salisbury.

 

John Alvin Plyler

John ALvin Plyler, 75, 105 Spruce Drive, died Thursday (Oct. 14, 1999) at Rowan Regional Medical Center.

Born March 14, 1924, in Salisbury, Mr. Plyler was a son of the late William E. and Lena Misenheimer Plyler. He was educated in the Rowan County schools and was a 1942 graduate of Boyden High School. During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army with the 208th Engineers Combat Battalion. He received the Eamet Ribbon and four BronzeStars. He retired from Chevron USA. He was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church, a life member of Elks Lodge 699, Harold B. Jarrett American Legion Post 342 and Hudson-Miller-Tatum VFW.

His wife, Oneda Sloop Plyler, died June 5, 1998.

Survivors include brothers Claude and Bob Plyler, both of Miami, Fla.; and sister Dorothy Mauney, Salisbury.

Services: 4 p.m. Saturday, Chapel of St. John’s Lutheran Church, conducted by the Rev. Mary Peters, associate pastor. Entombment, Rowan Memorial Park Mausoleum.

Visitation: 3 p.m. Saturday in the church library.

Zenith Elizabeth Sloop

The funeral is today for Zenith Elizabeth Sloop, 86, Salisbury Lutheran Nursing Home, who died Wednesday (Oct. 13, 1999) at Rowan Regional Medical Center.

Born Sept. 5, 1913, in Rowan County, Mrs. Sloop was a daughter of the late Charles Whittson and Mack Bertha Sechler Sloop. She retired after 52 years from Canon Mills Plant 1 and Plant 8. She was a member of St. Mark’s Lutheran Church, China Grove, and a member of LCW Women’s Group and the Senior Citizens Group.

Survivors include son Lowell Ray Jones, China Grove; sisters Cletus Shuffler and Doris Guffy, both of Salisbury, and Louise Warner and Bernice Kennerly, both of China Grove; brother David Sloop, California; four grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Services: 3 today, Whitley’s Funeral Home, Kannapolis, conducted by the Rev. David Swygert. Burial, West Lawn Memorial Park, China Grove.

Visitation: 2-3 today at the funeral home.

Mary Frances Smith

EAST SPENCER — Mary Frances Honeycutt Smith, 72, 403 Torbush St., died Thursday (Oct. 14, 1999)atRowan Regional Medical Center, Salisbury.

Born March 28, 1927, in Rowan County, Mrs. Smith was a daughter of the late Walter and Minnie Yates Honeycutt. Educated in the Rowan County schools, she retired from Cartex Mills. She was a member of Main Street United Methodist Church.

Her husband, George Lee Smith, died June 25, 1996.

Survivors include daughters Dianne Smith, Landis, and Barbara Smith,Lexington; brother Walter Lee Honeycutt Jr., Salisbury; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Helen McCombs Stirewalt

FAITH — The funeral will be Saturday for Helen McCombs Stirewalt, 87, Faith, who died Wednesday (Oct. 13, 1999) at her home.

Born Jan. 31, 1912, in Rowan County, Mrs. Stirewalt was a daughter of the late Lawson C. McCombs and Agnes Peeler McCombs Williams. She retired from Cannon Mills after 40 years. A lifelong member of Shiloh United Church of Christ, she was in the Morning Circle, Women’s Guild and Ladies Bible Class.

Her husband, Weldon “Ennie” Stirewalt, died March 3, 1997, and a daughter, Sherry S. Peeler, died Oct. 13, 1991.

Survivors include son Joe Stirewalt, Salisbury; daughter Gay Stirewalt Sanderson, Concord; sister Ruth Williams Upright, China Grove; 10 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

Services: 11 a.m. Saturday, Shiloh United Church of Christ, conducted by the Rev. Charles Sigler and the Rev. Keith Copeland. Burial, church cemetery.

Irene Woods Williams

CLEVELAND — Irene Woods “Tiny” Williams, 94, 360 Mount Hall Road, died Tuesday (Oct. 12, 1999) at Washington General Hospital, Washington, D.C.

Born Sept. 28, 1905, in Rowan County, Mrs. Williams was a daughter of the late Robert and Ellen Avery Woods. Educated in the Rowan County schools, she was a retired domestic worker. She was a member of Knox Grove Baptist Church, Cleveland.

Survivors include daughter Christine Annie June Crumb, Washington; sister Viola Woods, Cleveland; two grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Noble and Kelsey Funeral Home, Salisbury, is in charge.

The family will be at the home of a niece Marjorie Goodwine, 250 Mount Hall Road, Cleveland.
