Spurgeon Allen

MOCKSVILLE — Spurgeon Allen, 87, Mocksville, died Wednesday (Oct. 13, 1999) at Meadowbrook Manor of Clemmons.

Born Nov. 2, 1911, in Davie County, Mr. Allen was a son of the late Cana and Delia McDaniel Allen. A carpenter, Mr. Allen was a Methodist.

Survivors include daughters Nancy Dale, Mocksville, and Ethel Faulkner, Lexington; sister Mertie Allen Fishel, Winston-Salem; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Services: Graveside, 11 a.m. Friday, Cornatzer United Methodist Church cemetery, conducted by Dr. S.B. Warren and the Rev. Glenda Bennett.

Visitation: In the church fellowship hall immediately after the service.

Keith Vanburen Ballard

MOORESVILLE — Keith Vanburen Ballard, 76, 463 Langtree Road, died Tuesday (Oct. 12, 1999) at his home.

Born Dec. 29, 1922, in Iredell County, Mr. Ballard was a son of the late Curtis W. andMary Bostian Ballard. He was a carpenter.

Survivors include brothers Glenn Ballard, Mooresville, and Edward Ballard, Oakboro.

Services: Graveside, 11 a.m. Friday, Willow Valley Cemetery, conducted by the Rev.David Christy.

Visitation: None.

Robert C. Biggerstaff

COLUMBUS, Ga. — Robert C. Biggerstaff, 73, 2417 Bond Ave., died Friday (Oct. 8, 1999) at Martin Army Hospital.

Born Jan. 12, 1926, in Cramerton, Mr. Biggerstaff was the son of the late Alford A. and Ella Smith Biggerstaff. Educated in Rowan County schools, he graduated while serving in the U.S. Army. During World War II, he served in Japan and Germany, receiving many medals of honor. He also served in the Korean War. He received the Armed Forces Expeditor Medal for Korean service. He retired from the military after 22 years.

He later worked with civil services at Fort Benning, Ga., for 23 years. He was a member of Southside Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Elfrieda Liebacker Biggerstaff; son Capt. Thomas W. Biggerstaff, Fort Sill, Okla.; daughters Charlotte Tragesar, Karlstein, Germany, and Norma Hathcock, Smith Station, Ala.; brothers Guy D. Biggerstaff, Rapid City, S.D., and Cleveland C. Biggerstaff, Baltimore, Md.; sisters Mary Wyetzner, New York, and Mabel Tarlton, Kathleen Zakis and Rosa Black, all of Rockwell; and six grandchildren.

Graveside services with military honors were held Tuesday, Oct. 12, at the National Cemetery at Fort Mitchell in Alabama, conducted by the Rev. John Whaley, pastor of Southside Baptist Church.

McMullen Funeral Home was in charge.

 

Guy L. Brooks

KANNAPOLIS — The funeral will be Friday for Guy Loraine Brooks, 64, Kannapolis, who died Wednesday (Oct. 13, 1999) at his home after two months of serious illness.

Born Feb. 24, 1935, in Cabarrus County, Mr. Brooks was a son of the late Olin C. and Gladys Hobbs Brooks. Retired from Adams International Trucks in Charlotte, he previously worked for 19 years as a supervisor at Cannon Mills. He was a member of Parkwood Baptist Church and a veteran of the U.S. Army.

Survivors include his wife, Marlene Griffin Brooks; daughters Angie Brooks Ross, Harrisburg, and Tanya Brooks Childress, Concord; brothers J.L. Brooks, Concord, and Eugene “Gene” Colin Brooks, Kannapolis; and three grandchildren.

Services: 2 p.m. Friday, Lady’s Funeral Home Chapel, conducted by the Rev. Darrell Coble. Burial, Carolina Memorial Park.

Visitation: 6:30-8 tonight at the funeral home. At other times the family will be at the home.

Memorials: Rowan Regional Home Health and Hospice, 825-A W. Henderson St., Salisbury, N.C. 28144.

 

Beauford ‘B.A.’ Chester

LEXINGTON — Beauford “B.A.” Avean Chester, 69, 505 Beckner St., died Tuesday (Oct. 12, 1999) at Moses Cone Hospital, Greensboro.

Born Feb. 14, 1930 in Davidson County, Mr. Chester was the son of the late Julius Leroy and Nora Virginia Tesh Chester. He retired from the Greensboro Police Department in 1976. He later worked as a driver for Thomas Produce, Keystone and UPS. He was a licensed auctioneer.

A veteran of the Marines and U.S. Navy, he served during the Korean War. He was a member of Glenwood United Methodist Church, Greensboro. He moved from Greensboro back to Lexington in 1998.

His first wife, Elise Mae Stubblefield Chester, died June 14, 1970.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Lewis Chester; daughter Rosemary Chester Freeman, Lexington; sons Richard S. Chester, Cedar Grove, and son Larry D. Chester, Stokesdale; sisters Peggy Chester, Greensboro, and Shelby Brock, Lexington; brothers Dermont Chester, Graham, James L. Chester, Greensboro, and JimmyChester, Kalamizoo, Mich.; and four grandchildren.

Services: 10 a.m. Friday, Timberlake Chapel, Piedmont Funeral Home, conducted by the Rev. J. Burton Williams.

Visitation: 6:30-8:30 tonight at the funeral home. At other times the family will be at the home on Beckner Street.

Toby Lee Huffman

Toby Lee Huffman, 22, Grants Creek Road, died Wednesday (Oct. 13, 1999) from injuries sustained in an automobile accident.

KANNAPOLIS — Foy Leander Icard, 89, formerly of 102 Cedar Ave., died Thursday (Oct. 14, 1999) at Transitional Health Services.

Dorothy Eagle Whisnant Major, 88, formerly of Hollywood Drive, died Wednesday (Oct. 13, 1999) at Salisbury Lutheran Nursing Home.

Cleveland Phillips

SHERRILLS FORD — Cleveland Phillips, 74, 7903 Winalda Ave., died Monday (Oct. 11, 1999) at Brian Center Viewmont from a lingering illness.

Born April 13, 1925, in Rock Hill, S.C., Mr. Phillips was a son of the late Melvin and Katie Douglas Phillips. He retired from Hickory Springs Manufacturing Co. He was a member of Prospect Baptist Church and its choir.

Survivors include daughter Mrs. Preston (Katie P.) Graham, Kannapolis, Mrs. Curtis (Vivian L.) Springs, Catawba, the Rev. Gloria Jean Ramseur, Newton, Queen Esther Hunsucker, of the home, Mrs. Robert (Diana Lynn)Lackey Jr., Hickory, Constance E. Phillips, Sherrills Ford, and Mrs. Lindsay (Rita Melinda)Parson, Taylorsville; sons Willie Cleveland Phillips Jr., of the home, the Rev. Danny Ray Phillips, Newton, the Rev. James Mitchell Phillips, Claremont, and David Glenn Phillips, Conover; brother James Phillips, Kannapolis; sisters Peachnetta Bryant, Salisbury, Daisy Miller and Beatrice Gibbs, both of Catawba; 30 grandchildren; and 33 great-grandchildren.

Services: 4 p.m. Friday, New Prospect Baptist Church, conducted by a son, the Rev. Danny Ray Phillips, and the Rev. Jarvis Saner. Burial, church cemetery.

Visitation: 7-8:30 tonight, Allen Mitchell Funeral Home, Newton.

 

Zenith Elizabeth Sloop

CHINA GROVE — Zenith Elizabeth Sloop, 86, of Salisbury Lutheran Nursing Home, died Wednesday (Oct. 13, 1999) at Rowan Regional Medical Center, Salisbury, after a short period of declining health.

Helen McCombs Stirewalt

FAITH — Helen McCombs Stirewalt, 87, Faith, died Wednesday (Oct. 13, 1999) at her home.

Sean L. Tucker

KANNAPOLIS — The funeral will be Friday for Sean Lee Tucker, 1860 Anson Ave.

The infant was born July 22, 1999, in Cabarrus County to Crystal L. Tucker.

Survivors, in addition to his mother, include grandparents Shelby and Andy Peyton, Salisbury, and Donald Tucker, Kannapolis; great-grandparents Butch and Linda Peyton and Louise Fink, Kannapolis, and Edith Whisnant, Salisbury; and great-great-grandmother Nora Mae Tucker, Kannapolis.

Services: Graveside, 11 a.m. Friday, Carolina Memorial Park, conducted by the Revs. Perry Lemmons and Tom Tucker.

Visitation: 9-10:45 a.m. Friday, Lady’s Funeral Home.
