Spurgeon Allen, 87, Mocksville, died Wednesday (Oct. 13, 1999) at Meadowbrook Manor of
Clemmons.
Born Nov. 2, 1911, in Davie County, Mr. Allen was
a son of the late Cana and Delia McDaniel Allen. A carpenter, Mr. Allen was a Methodist.
Survivors include daughters Nancy Dale,
Mocksville, and Ethel Faulkner, Lexington; sister Mertie Allen Fishel, Winston-Salem;
three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

United Methodist Church cemetery, conducted by Dr. S.B. Warren and the Rev. Glenda

Langtree Road, died Tuesday (Oct. 12, 1999) at his home.
Born Dec. 29, 1922, in Iredell County, Mr. Ballard
was a son of the late Curtis W. andMary Bostian Ballard. He was a carpenter.
Survivors include brothers Glenn Ballard,
Mooresville, and Edward Ballard, Oakboro.

Robert C. Biggerstaff
COLUMBUS, Ga. Robert C. Biggerstaff, 73,
2417 Bond Ave., died Friday (Oct. 8, 1999) at Martin Army Hospital.
Born Jan. 12, 1926, in Cramerton, Mr. Biggerstaff
was the son of the late Alford A. and Ella Smith Biggerstaff. Educated in Rowan County
schools, he graduated while serving in the U.S. Army. During World War II, he served in
Japan and Germany, receiving many medals of honor. He also served in the Korean War. He
received the Armed Forces Expeditor Medal for Korean service. He retired from the military
after 22 years.
He later worked with civil services at Fort
Benning, Ga., for 23 years. He was a member of Southside Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Elfrieda Liebacker
Biggerstaff; son Capt. Thomas W. Biggerstaff, Fort Sill, Okla.; daughters Charlotte
Tragesar, Karlstein, Germany, and Norma Hathcock, Smith Station, Ala.; brothers Guy D.
Biggerstaff, Rapid City, S.D., and Cleveland C. Biggerstaff, Baltimore, Md.; sisters Mary
Wyetzner, New York, and Mabel Tarlton, Kathleen Zakis and Rosa Black, all of Rockwell; and
six grandchildren.
Graveside services with military honors were held
Tuesday, Oct. 12, at the National Cemetery at Fort Mitchell in Alabama, conducted by the
Rev. John Whaley, pastor of Southside Baptist Church.

KANNAPOLIS The funeral will be Friday for
Guy Loraine Brooks, 64, Kannapolis, who died Wednesday (Oct. 13, 1999) at his home after
two months of serious illness.
Born Feb. 24, 1935, in Cabarrus County, Mr. Brooks
was a son of the late Olin C. and Gladys Hobbs Brooks. Retired from Adams International
Trucks in Charlotte, he previously worked for 19 years as a supervisor at Cannon Mills. He
was a member of Parkwood Baptist Church and a veteran of the U.S. Army.
Survivors include his wife, Marlene Griffin
Brooks; daughters Angie Brooks Ross, Harrisburg, and Tanya Brooks Childress, Concord;
brothers J.L. Brooks, Concord, and Eugene Gene Colin Brooks, Kannapolis; and
three grandchildren.

LEXINGTON Beauford B.A. Avean
Chester, 69, 505 Beckner St., died Tuesday (Oct. 12, 1999) at Moses Cone Hospital,
Greensboro.
Born Feb. 14, 1930 in Davidson County, Mr. Chester
was the son of the late Julius Leroy and Nora Virginia Tesh Chester. He retired from the
Greensboro Police Department in 1976. He later worked as a driver for Thomas Produce,
Keystone and UPS. He was a licensed auctioneer.
A veteran of the Marines and U.S. Navy, he served
during the Korean War. He was a member of Glenwood United Methodist Church, Greensboro. He
moved from Greensboro back to Lexington in 1998.
His first wife, Elise Mae Stubblefield Chester,
died June 14, 1970.
Survivors include his wife, Mary Lewis Chester;
daughter Rosemary Chester Freeman, Lexington; sons Richard S. Chester, Cedar Grove, and
son Larry D. Chester, Stokesdale; sisters Peggy Chester, Greensboro, and Shelby Brock,
Lexington; brothers Dermont Chester, Graham, James L. Chester, Greensboro, and
JimmyChester, Kalamizoo, Mich.; and four grandchildren.
Services: 10 a.m. Friday, Timberlake Chapel,
