Rufus Henry McNeely
Rufus Henry McNeely, 61, 310 W. Marlboro Drive,
Chandler, Ariz., a native of Rowan County, died Monday (Aug. 30, 1999) at Desert Samaritan
Hospital, Mesa, Ariz.
Born Dec. 7, 1937, he was a son of the late
Lucille McNeely Scott. A graduate of R. A. Clement High School, Cleveland, he was a
retired chief master sergeant with 30 years service in the U.S.Air Force. He was a member
of Alma School Church of Christ.
Survivors include wife Mamie Galloway McNeely; son
Rufus H. McNeely Jr., Alamogordo, N.M.; daughter Sheila McNeely, of the home; brothers
Billy McNeely, Granite Quarry, and Jerry McNeely, Rochester, N.Y.; sisters Yvonne Wonson,
Albany, N.Y., Sandra McNeely, New York, and Evelyn Faye Scott, Salisbury; and one
grandchild.
Services: The body will be brought to Salisbury
for funeral services and burial.

Theresa Wilhelm Moss
KANNAPOLIS The funeral will be Thursday for
Theresa Wilhelm Moss, 83, formerly of 104 Hemlock Ave., who died Monday (Aug. 30, 1999) at
NorthEast Medical Center. She had been in declining health four years and seriously ill
six months.
Born April 25, 1916, in Rowan County, she was a
daughter of the late Thomas Alexander and Willie Ila Ennis Wilhelm. A receptionist at
NorthEast Medical Center for 25 years, she retired in 1985. Earlier, she worked at Cannon
Mills Co. She was a member of Bethpage United Methodist Church.
Her husband, Edward Lewis Moss, died in 1970.
Survivors include daughters Phyllis M. Yost,
Concord, and Katherine M. Thompson, Lexington, Ky.; brothers Bill and John Wilhelm, both
of Kannapolis, and Marvin Wilhelm, Mount Gilead; sister Dorothy Helms, Kannapolis; two
grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

KANNAPOLIS The funeral will be today for
Cleo D. Martin, 81, formerly of 1303 W. C Street, who died Monday (Aug. 30, 1999) at
NorthEast Medical Center. She had been in declining health six months and seriously ill
two months.,
Born July 9, 1918, in Fannon County, Ga., she was
a daughter of the late George and Addie Hancock Dillard. Employed in No. 2 weave room of
Cannon Mills Plant 4 for 40 years, she retired in 1980.
Mrs. Martin is survived by a number of nieces and
nephews.

Buford Eugene Neal
The funeral will be Friday for Buford Eugene Neal,
47, 200 Grant St., Apt. 36, who died Monday at NorthEast Medical Center.
Born Jan. 31, 1952, in Cabarrus County, he was a
son of the late Walter and Mary Frances Smith Neal. Retired from Fieldcrest Cannon, he was
a member of St. Paul Mission of China Grove.
Survivors include wife Thelma Cooper Neal; son
Cabarrius B. Neal, Statesville; stepson Andre Douglas, Kannapolis; stepdaughters Millicent

Born Feb. 26, 1915, in Stanly County, Miss Crowell
was a daughter of the late Homer Clarence and Vera Mae Cagle Crowell. She worked as a
spinner at Wiscassett Mills, Albemarle, for 45 years. A member of New Mount Tabor United
Methodist Church, Richfield, she was active with the Methodist Women, the childrens
ministry and Friendly Neighbors Senior Citizen Club.

Theresa Whiteside Mama T Fields, 84,
527 N. Cedar St., died Saturday (Oct. 9, 1999) at Rowan Regional Medical Center after 4
1/2 years of declining health.
Born Jan. 1, 1915, in Rock Hill, S.C., Mrs. Fields
was a daughter of the late James and Blanche Sherer Whiteside. Educated in the Gastonia
schools, she was a retired domestic worker.
She was a member of First Calvary Baptist Church,
where she was a deaconess, past president and treasurer of the Missionary No. 1, charter
member and past president of Royal Ambassadors, a general missionary, past chairperson of
the kitchen committee, a member of Dorcas Sunday School Class and of BTU.
Mrs. Fields was crowned Ms. First Calvary. As a
representative of First Calvary, she received the NAACPMother of the Year award.
She was past president and treasurer of Brookview
Senior Citizens Club, a volunteer with Meals on Wheels and past president of Eastside
Community Club. Mrs. Fields was honored by Boy Scout Troop 449 for outstanding community
service.
Survivors include son Charles Fields Jr.,
Salisbury; daughter Rena F. Morgan, Salisbury; five grandchildren; and four
great-grandchildren.

Born March 6, 1919, in Stanly County, Mrs. Lanning
was a daughter of the late Lawson Madison and Molly Roxanne Starnes Odell. She was a
member of Stanly County DAR, a longtime member and past president of Albemarle
Womens Club, and a member and past president of the Stanly County Memorial Hospital
Auxiliary. She was a Sunday school teacher at Badin Baptist Church and Palmerville Baptist
Church, New London.

sustained in an automobile accident in Rockwell.

son of Patricia Thompson, Rockwell, and Walter Fred Smith, Wilmington. He attended
Salisbury High School and Buncombe Technical in Asheville. A plumber, he worked for Guy

William Earl Snipes
LANDIS William Earl Snipes, 86, 702 W. Rice
St., died Sunday (Oct. 10, 1999) at Genesis ElderCare of Mooresville.
Born April 19, 1913, in Kannapolis, Mr. Snipes was
a son of the late William Edgar and Anne Smith Snipes. A graduate of Landis High School,
he had been employed by Snipes Service Station, Fieldcrest Cannon Swink plant No. 6 and
Tads Hardware. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and was a member of
Freeze Seymore American Legion Post 105. He was also a member of Eureka Lodge 283, Woodmen
of the World and Mount Zion United Church of Christ, China Grove.
His wife, Pauline Polly Pethel Snipes,
died Aug. 7, 1983.
Survivors include daughter Mrs. Danny

for James Dean Osborne, 65, 2731 Ashwood, North Orange, Calif., formerly of China Grove,
who died Sunday (Aug. 29, 1999) in California.
Born July 11, 1934, in Rowan County, he was a son
of Margaret Cooper Osborne of Concord and the late James Tarlton Osborne. Educated in the
Landis schools, he was an electrician. He served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War.
