            Clarence T. Davis

KANNAPOLIS — Clarence T. Davis, 92, 1003 Lane St., died Tuesday (Aug. 31, 1999) at his home.

Whitley’s Funeral Home is in charge.

Rufus Henry McNeely

Rufus Henry McNeely, 61, 310 W. Marlboro Drive, Chandler, Ariz., a native of Rowan County, died Monday (Aug. 30, 1999) at Desert Samaritan Hospital, Mesa, Ariz.

Born Dec. 7, 1937, he was a son of the late Lucille McNeely Scott. A graduate of R. A. Clement High School, Cleveland, he was a retired chief master sergeant with 30 years service in the U.S.Air Force. He was a member of Alma School Church of Christ.

Survivors include wife Mamie Galloway McNeely; son Rufus H. McNeely Jr., Alamogordo, N.M.; daughter Sheila McNeely, of the home; brothers Billy McNeely, Granite Quarry, and Jerry McNeely, Rochester, N.Y.; sisters Yvonne Wonson, Albany, N.Y., Sandra McNeely, New York, and Evelyn Faye Scott, Salisbury; and one grandchild.

Services: The body will be brought to Salisbury for funeral services and burial.

Visitation: Friday, Sept, 3, Bueler Mortuary, Chandler, Ariz.

Mitchell & Fair Funeral Service is in charge of local arrangements.


Theresa Wilhelm Moss

KANNAPOLIS — The funeral will be Thursday for Theresa Wilhelm Moss, 83, formerly of 104 Hemlock Ave., who died Monday (Aug. 30, 1999) at NorthEast Medical Center. She had been in declining health four years and seriously ill six months.

Born April 25, 1916, in Rowan County, she was a daughter of the late Thomas Alexander and Willie Ila Ennis Wilhelm. A receptionist at NorthEast Medical Center for 25 years, she retired in 1985. Earlier, she worked at Cannon Mills Co. She was a member of Bethpage United Methodist Church.

Her husband, Edward Lewis Moss, died in 1970.

Survivors include daughters Phyllis M. Yost, Concord, and Katherine M. Thompson, Lexington, Ky.; brothers Bill and John Wilhelm, both of Kannapolis, and Marvin Wilhelm, Mount Gilead; sister Dorothy Helms, Kannapolis; two grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Services: 2 p.m. Thursday, Bethpage United Methodist Church, conducted by the Rev. Randy Foster. Burial, West Lawn Memorial Park, China Grove.

Visitation: 6-8 tonight, Whitley’s Funeral Home. At other times the family will be at the home of daughter Phyllis M. Yost, 5436 Barrier Road, Concord.

Cleo D. Martin

KANNAPOLIS — The funeral will be today for Cleo D. Martin, 81, formerly of 1303 W. C Street, who died Monday (Aug. 30, 1999) at NorthEast Medical Center. She had been in declining health six months and seriously ill two months.,

Born July 9, 1918, in Fannon County, Ga., she was a daughter of the late George and Addie Hancock Dillard. Employed in No. 2 weave room of Cannon Mills Plant 4 for 40 years, she retired in 1980.

Mrs. Martin is survived by a number of nieces and nephews.

Services: Graveside, 11 a.m. today, Carolina Memorial Park, conducted by the Rev. Gene Frady.

 

Buford Eugene Neal

The funeral will be Friday for Buford Eugene Neal, 47, 200 Grant St., Apt. 36, who died Monday at NorthEast Medical Center.

Born Jan. 31, 1952, in Cabarrus County, he was a son of the late Walter and Mary Frances Smith Neal. Retired from Fieldcrest Cannon, he was a member of St. Paul Mission of China Grove.

Survivors include wife Thelma Cooper Neal; son Cabarrius B. Neal, Statesville; stepson Andre Douglas, Kannapolis; stepdaughters Millicent Douglas and Nicole Washington, both of Salisbury; brother Randolph Neal, Kannapolis; sisters Peggy Drye, Concord, Ida Denise Haynie, Salisbury, and Linda Ann Neal, Kannapolis; and seven grandchildren.

Services: 3 p.m. Friday, Fire Baptist Holiness Church, conducted by the Rev. Lizzie Stroud, the Rev. Tyrone Washington and the Rev. Nancy Lowery. Burial, Rutherford Memorial Park.

Visitation: 7-8 p.m. Thursday, Clark Funeral Home. At other times the family will be at the home on Grant Street.

 

Mattie Bell Crowell

NEW LONDON — Mattie Bell Crowell, 84, 24670 Rogers Road, died Saturday (Oct. 9, 1999) at Stanly Memorial Hospital, Albemarle.

Born Feb. 26, 1915, in Stanly County, Miss Crowell was a daughter of the late Homer Clarence and Vera Mae Cagle Crowell. She worked as a spinner at Wiscassett Mills, Albemarle, for 45 years. A member of New Mount Tabor United Methodist Church, Richfield, she was active with the Methodist Women, the children’s ministry and Friendly Neighbors Senior Citizen Club.

Survivors include brother Clarence Allen Crowell, Albemarle; and sisters Vergie Barbee, Albemarle, and Onnie Chance, Richfield.

Services: 2 p.m. Tuesday, New Mount Tabor United Methodist Church, Richfield, conducted by the Rev. Michael D. Byrd. Burial, church cemetery.

Visitation: 6:30-8:30 tonight, Hartsell Funeral Home, Albemarle. At other times the family will be at the home on Roger Road.

Theresa Whiteside Fields

Theresa Whiteside “Mama T” Fields, 84, 527 N. Cedar St., died Saturday (Oct. 9, 1999) at Rowan Regional Medical Center after 4 1/2 years of declining health.

Born Jan. 1, 1915, in Rock Hill, S.C., Mrs. Fields was a daughter of the late James and Blanche Sherer Whiteside. Educated in the Gastonia schools, she was a retired domestic worker.

She was a member of First Calvary Baptist Church, where she was a deaconess, past president and treasurer of the Missionary No. 1, charter member and past president of Royal Ambassadors, a general missionary, past chairperson of the kitchen committee, a member of Dorcas Sunday School Class and of BTU.

Mrs. Fields was crowned Ms. First Calvary. As a representative of First Calvary, she received the NAACPMother of the Year award.

She was past president and treasurer of Brookview Senior Citizens Club, a volunteer with Meals on Wheels and past president of Eastside Community Club. Mrs. Fields was honored by Boy Scout Troop 449 for outstanding community service.

Survivors include son Charles Fields Jr., Salisbury; daughter Rena F. Morgan, Salisbury; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Noble and Kelsey Funeral Home is in charge. The family will be at the home of son Charles Fields Jr., 1009 Hawkinstown Road.

 

Eugene Gordon

Eugene Gordon, 79, Salisbury, died Sunday (Oct. 10, 1999) at Presbyterian Hospital, Charlotte.

Summersett Funeral Home is in charge.

 

Rachel Miller Gore

CALABASH — Rachel Miller Gore, 74, Calabash, mother of Beth Adams of Salisbury, died Saturday (Oct. 9, 1999) at New Hanover Regional Medical Center.

Services: 11 a.m. Tuesday, Seaside United Methodist Church. Burial, Bethel Church cemetery.

Visitation: 6-8 tonight, Brunswick Funeral Service, Shallotte.

 

Mary Anderson Hartley

Mary Emma Anderson Hartley, 76, Salisbury, died Saturday (Oct. 9, 1999) at Genesis ElderCare.

Born July 21, 1923, in Buncombe County, Mrs. Hartley was the daughter of the late Lot and Essie McKinney Anderson. Educated in the Buncombe County schools, she was a homemaker.

Her husband, J.C. Hartley, died Oct. 1, 1996.

Survivors include son Arnold Hartley, Oxford; daughter Lois H. Austin,Lexington; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Services: None. The body will be cremated.

Visitation: None.

Ethel Clodfelter Kepley

Ethel Clodfelter Kepley, 92, 3 Dogwood Knoll, Asheville, formerly of Salisbury, died Saturday (Oct. 9, 1999) at her home.

Her husband, Henry Burton Kepley, died Oct. 31, 1988, and her son, Henry Burton Kepley Jr., died Nov. 25, 1997.

Services: Graveside, 11 a.m. Wednesday, Rowan Memorial Park, conducted by the Rev. Thomas L.Griffis, senior pastor, First United Methodist Church.

Visitation: None.

Summersett Funeral Home is in charge.

-- Mary C. Small and Metta C. Allmon, both of Salisbury, were omitted from the list of survivors in Monday’s obituary for their sister Ethel Clodfelter Kepley.


Helen Lanning

BADIN — Helen Lanning, 80, 21 Tallassee, died Sunday (Oct. 10, 1999) at her home.

Born March 6, 1919, in Stanly County, Mrs. Lanning was a daughter of the late Lawson Madison and Molly Roxanne Starnes Odell. She was a member of Stanly County DAR, a longtime member and past president of Albemarle Women’s Club, and a member and past president of the Stanly County Memorial Hospital Auxiliary. She was a Sunday school teacher at Badin Baptist Church and Palmerville Baptist Church, New London.

She was survived by a number of nieces and nephews.

Services: 11 a.m. Tuesday, Hartsell Funeral Home Chapel, Albemarle, conducted by the Rev. Claud Dick. Burial, Fairview Memorial Park,Albemarle.

Visitation: 6-8 tonight at the funeral home.

Jeffrey Wayne Smith

ROCKWELL — The funeral will be Tuesday for Jeffrey Wayne Smith, 29, Rockwell, who died Saturday (Oct. 9, 1999) from injuries sustained in an automobile accident in Rockwell.

Born May 24, 1970, in Salisbury, Mr. Smith was a son of Patricia Thompson, Rockwell, and Walter Fred Smith, Wilmington. He attended Salisbury High School and Buncombe Technical in Asheville. A plumber, he worked for Guy Turner Engineering inGreensboro. He was a member of Shiloh United Church of Christ, Faith.

Survivors, in addition to his parents, include half brother Chad Smith, Kannapolis; half sister Gina Smith, Wilmington; and grandmother Pansie Bame, Salisbury.

Services: Memorial, 11 a.m. Tuesday, Shiloh United Church of Christ, conducted by the Rev. James Cress.

Visitation: None.

William Earl Snipes

LANDIS — William Earl Snipes, 86, 702 W. Rice St., died Sunday (Oct. 10, 1999) at Genesis ElderCare of Mooresville.

Born April 19, 1913, in Kannapolis, Mr. Snipes was a son of the late William Edgar and Anne Smith Snipes. A graduate of Landis High School, he had been employed by Snipes Service Station, Fieldcrest Cannon Swink plant No. 6 and Tad’s Hardware. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and was a member of Freeze Seymore American Legion Post 105. He was also a member of Eureka Lodge 283, Woodmen of the World and Mount Zion United Church of Christ, China Grove.

His wife, Pauline “Polly” Pethel Snipes, died Aug. 7, 1983.

Survivors include daughter Mrs. Danny (Carol)McCombs, Landis; sister Ikey Snipes Swain, Landis; one grandchild; and two great-grandchildren.

Services: 4 p.m. Tuesday, Mount Zion United Church of Christ, China Grove, conducted by the Rev. William Campbell. Burial, Greenlawn Cemetery.

Visitation: 7-8:30 tonight, Lin-Honeycutt Funeral Home,Colonial Chapel, Landis.

James Dean Osborne

CHINA GROVE — The funeral will be Thursday for James Dean Osborne, 65, 2731 Ashwood, North Orange, Calif., formerly of China Grove, who died Sunday (Aug. 29, 1999) in California.

Born July 11, 1934, in Rowan County, he was a son of Margaret Cooper Osborne of Concord and the late James Tarlton Osborne. Educated in the Landis schools, he was an electrician. He served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War.

Survivors, in addition to his mother, include sons David Osborne, Palm Springs, Calif., and Dennis Osborne, Burbank, Calif.; daughter Dena Christensen, Sanford, Maine; brother Anthony M. Osborne, Cincinnati, Ohio; sisters Jolene Griffin, Charlotte, Peggy Austin and Carol Scarboro, both of Kannapolis, and Annette McWaters, Eden; and one grandchild.

Services: Graveside, 1 p.m. Thursday, Greenlawn Cemetery, China Grove, conducted by the Rev. Billy Honeycutt, pastor, Landis Baptist Church.

Visitation: 12-12:45 p.m. Thursday, Linn-Honeycutt Funeral Home.
