Island Road, Terrell, died Saturday (Oct. 9, 1999) at Genesis ElderCare.
Born May 20, 1911 in Rowan County, Mr.Atwell was a
son of the late Will T. and Daisy London Atwell. Educated in Rowan County schools, he was
a retired farmer and carpenter and a member of Unity United Methodist Church.
His wife, Viola Mae Atwell, died in October 1998.
Survivors include son Richard Atwell, Terrell;
brother Frank Atwell, Enochville; and sister Katherine Goines, Mooresville.

J.J. Blair, 25, 272 Tumblewood Drive, died Friday (Oct. 8, 1999) in
Summersville Memorial Hospital as the result of an automobile accident.
Born July 30, 1974 in Clarion County, Penn., Mr.
Blair was a son of Carl Blair of Clarion, Penn., and Mrs. Leroy (Chiqueitta) Rupert
Fleming, China Grove. He worked for F.T. Williams Construction, Charlotte.
His son, Richard Blair, died in 1997.
Survivors, in addition to his parents, include his
wife, Tammy Anthony Blair; daughters Ashley Blair and Kayla Blair; son James Blair;
sisters Conneitta Bennett of Salisbury, Carla Chitty of Kannapolis and J.C. Athena Blair
of China Grove; brother Christopher Blair of Erie, Penn.; stepbrothers David Fleming of
China Grove and Lee Aaron Fleming of Lexington; stepsisters Denea Fleming of Clarion,
Penn. and Diane Whitehead of Salisbury; and grandfather Richard Rupert of St. Petersburg,
Penn.

Ethel Johnson Carroll
NORWOOD Ethel Johnson Carroll, 73, of 416
Island Cove Road died Saturday (Oct. 9, 1999) at Stanly Memorial Hospital.
Born June 9, 1926, in Lancaster, S.C., Mrs.
Carroll was a daughter of the late Johnny and Ellen Lambert Johnson. A homemaker, she was
an active church worker all her life. Her husband, the Rev. C. Eugene Carroll, was former
pastor of Kendalls Baptist Church, New London; Kerr Memorial Baptist Church, Concord;
University Baptist Church, Lancaster, S.C. and is present pastor of Richfield Baptist
Church, Richfield.
In addition to her husband, survivors include
daughter Jeanie C. Nugent of Norwood, one grandson and two great-grandsons.
Services: 2 p.m. Monday, Richfield Baptist Church.
Conducted by the Revs. Claud Dick, Jason Lee and Kenneth Lambert. Burial, Kendalls Baptist
Church Cemetery, New London.

Chester William Combs
MOORESVILLE Chester William Combs, 80, of
470 Ervin Farm Road died Saturday (Oct. 9, 1999) at the V. A. Hospital in Salisbury.
Born March 6, 1919 in Ashe County, Mr. Combs was a
son of the the late Vance and Pearl Turner Combs. An area resident since 1936, he worked
at Cannon Mills Co. Plant No. 1 in the bleachery department for 42 years until retiring in
1978. He was also a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.
His wife, Grace Beaver Combs, died Oct. 20, 1996.
Survivors include brother Ray Combs and sister
Bobbie Goodnight, both of Kannapolis.

Talmadge Dewitt Rape
CHINAGROVE Talmadge Dewitt Rape, 89, died
Saturday (Oct. 9, 1999) at Autumn Care of Salisbury.
Born Dec. 24, 1909 in Iredell County, Mr. Rape was
the son of the late Harley Barnett and Hattie Caldwell Rape. Educated in Iredell and Rowan
County schools, he retired from Cannon Mills as an overseer. He was a botanist, beekeeper
and gentleman farmer. A U.S. Army veteran of World War II, he was a member of Mt. Moriah
Lutheran Church, past member of the church council, past president of the Adult Sunday
School, former youth Sunday school teacher and served on various other committees at the
church.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Ollie Lipe
Rape, and sons Ned C. Rape and Jerry W. Rape.
Survivors include two grandchildren one
step-grandchild and one great-grandchild.
Services: Private services will be held.

James Sonny Junior Sides
GRANITE QUARRY James Sonny
Junior Sides, 73, died Saturday (Oct. 9, 1999) at his residence after being seriously ill
for six weeks.
Born March 21, 1926 in Rowan County, Mr. Sides was
a son of the late James Alexander and Valda Estell Elliott Sides Jr. Educated in Rowan
County schools, he served in the U.S. Navy and the U.S. Army and retired after 20 years of
service, including service in the Korean War.
After working 18 years for Hoechst-Celanese, he
retired in 1985 and was a former member of Calvary Baptist Church in Spencer.
He is survived by his wife, Maria Beer Sides, whom
he married April 18, 1958. Other survivors include brothers Frank A. Sides, BennyC. Sides
and Jack A. Sides, all of Salisbury; and sister Mary S. Snider of Salisbury.
Services: 3 p.m. Monday, Lyerlys Funeral
Homes James C. Lyerly Chapel, conducted by the Rev. Bobby Seagroves. Burial, Rowan
Memorial Park with military graveside rites by the Rowan County Veterans Council.
