Neely McManus, 52, 404 Lincolnton Road. died Wednesday (Oct. 6, 1999) at Rowan Regional
Medical Center after six months of declining health and two weeks of serious illness.
Born June 18, 1947, in Davidson County, she was
the daughter of James Roddy Neely, Salisbury, and the late Savannah Evan Neely. A graduate
of Dunbar High School, she earned an associate degree in early childhood education at
Rowan-Cabarrus Community College. She also attended Livingstone College and was a Rowan
County Head Start teacher. She was a member of Shady Grove Baptist Church, East Spencer.
Survivors include son Darren McManus, Salisbury;
brothers James R. Danand Richard Neely, both of Salisbury; sisters Mrs. John
Frank (Patricia) Stout and Mrs. Woodrow (Linda) Clark, both of Salisbury, Mrs. Robert
(Lola) Bittle, Fort Wayne, Ind., and Mrs. Joseph (Valerie) Ellison, Winston-Salem; and one
grandchild.
Services:4 p.m. Monday, Shady Grove Baptist
Church, East Spencer, conducted by the Rev. John Gaston, pastor. Burial, church cemetery.
Visitation: 3:30-4 p.m. Monday, at the church. The
remainder of the time, the family will be at the home of son Dan Neely, 208 N. Milford
Drive.

Hazel Marie Whitley Helms
OAKBORO - Hazel Marie Whitley Helms, 75, 12658
Highway 205, died Friday (Oct. 8, 1999) at Britthaven of the Piedmont in Albemarle.
Born Aug. 18, 1924, in Stanley County, Mrs. Helms
was a daughter of the late Amanda Dunn and Will Whitley. She was a nursing assistant at
Stanly Memorial Hospital. She was a member of First Baptist Church, Oakboro.
She was preceded in death by a son, Ronnie Fred
Helms.
Survivors include husband Fred Adam Helms,
Oakboro; sons Jeff Bingham Helms, Oakboro, and Ricky David Helms, Wilson; daughter Jill H.
Martin, New Salem; eight grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

William E. Charlie Hoover
William E. CharlieHoover, 73,
Salisbury, died Friday (Oct. 8, 1999) at Duke University Medical Center, Durham.
A graduate of Boyden High School, Mr. Hoover was
president of Carter Contemporary before his retirement in 1987. A member of St.
Johns Lutheran Church, he was active in the Mens Chorus.
Survivors include wife Mary Ann Hoover; sons Eddie
and Jack Hoover, both of Salisbury, Brent Barringer, Cary, and Gib Johnson, Jacksonville,
Fla.; brother Sterling Hoover, Marco Island, Fla.; sisters Beatrice Lemmond, Charlotte,
and Bertha Rice, Kenner, La.; nine grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Born June 28, 1961, in Iredell County, she was a
daughter of Bobby Smith and the late Frances Carrigan. She was a housewife.
Survivors include son Roger Lee McCarter,
Mooresville; brother Kevin Gene Smith, Moorseville; and grandmother Willie Carrigan,
Kannapolis.

Bessie Davis Trexler
FAITH - Bessie Davis Trexler, 73, 480 Rainy Road,
died Thursday (Oct. 7, 1999) at Presbyterian Hospital, Charlotte, after two months of
declining health.
Born July 27, 1926, in Vivian, La., Mrs. Trexler
was a daughter of the late Lola Pace and D.R. Davis She attended high school in Arkansas
and attended nursing school at Rowan-Cabarrus Community College.
A licensed practical nurse, she worked at Rowan
Regional Medical Center and the VA Medical Center in Salisbury and did private nursing.
Mrs. Trexler was president of Faith Legion Post
Auxiliary for 15 years. She was a member of Faith Baptist Church and public relations
director for the Fourth of July Celebration in Faith.
Survivors include husband Clifford C. Trexler,
whom she married 38 years ago; sons Odiest Beavers, Faith, John Beavers, Anchorage, Ala.,
and Kenneth Ray Clounch, Texas; daughters Ina Marie Beavers, Mocksville, and Margie
Clounch, Texas; brothers Jimmy Lee and Bobby Reece Wall, both of Texas, and Tony Wall,
South Dakota; sister Lessie D. Lanning, Rockwell; half sisters Avon Poole, Jackson, Miss.,
and Lenor Dell Wall, Texas; and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

was a daughter of the late Mamie Sanders and Chris Johnson. She was a member of Mount Zion
CME Church.

daughter Shirley Brown, Salisbury; sisters Loretta Black and Bessie Hughes, both of
Statesville; two grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
