Vicky Diane Buchanan

Vicky Diane Buchanan, 43, of Salisbury died Tuesday (Oct. 5, 1999) at Rowan Regional Medical Center. The body will remain at Lyerly Funeral Home pending completion of funeral arrangements.

 

George Franklin Burgess

OAKBORO — George Franklin Burgess, 75, 16089 Silver Road, died Tuesday (Oct. 5, 1999) at Stanly Memorial Hospital, Albemarle.

Born Sept. 8, 1924, in Chesterfield, S.C., Mr. Burgess was a son of the late Caleb Joshua and Rhonda Burgess Burgess. He was a self-employed pulpwood cutter.

Survivors include wife Kathrine Parnell Burgess, Albemarle; sons Gene Burgess, Oakboro, and Jim Burgess, Stanfield; daughters Della Rae, Stanfield, and Peggy Eury and Dorothy Thomas, both of Oakboro; stepdaughters Joyce Huston, Salisbury, and Betty Starnes, Concord; sister Dorothy Mitchel, China Grove; 19 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

Services: None.

Visitation: 7-9 tonight, Hartsell Funeral Home. At other times the family will be at the home on Silver Road.

 

Edith Lytle Caldwell

MOORESVILLE — Edith Lytle Caldwell, 88, 256 Templeton Road, died Monday (Oct. 4, 1999) in Clemmons.

Born Oct. 18, 1910, in Iredell County, Mrs. Caldwell was a daughter of the late Walter and Alice Cloninger Lytle. She was a homemaker.

Her husband, Charles Moore Caldwell, died in 1969.

Survivors include son Larry Caldwell, Mooresville; brother Rupert Lytle, Mooresville; two grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Services: 11 a.m. Thursday, Fair View United Methodist Church, conducted by the Rev. David Christy. Burial, church cemetery.

Visitation: 7:30-8:30 tonight, Neill Funeral Home.

Jesse Bruce Campbell

KANNAPOLIS — Jesse Bruce Campbell, 53, 608 Hillside Street, died Tuesday (Oct. 5, 1999) at NorthEast Medical Center.

Born Sept. 25, 2946, in Wilkes County, Mr. Campbell was a son of the late Vander Campbell and Faye Davis Campbell. He was the owner of Campbell’s Automotive in Kannapolis and he attended Near the Cross Church, Kannapolis.

Survivors include his wife Ernestine (Tina) Ross Campbell; sons Jesse Wayne Campbell, China Grove, and Curtis Lee Campbell, Kannapolis; brothers Jerry Campbell, Kannapolis, Jay Campbell, Rockwell, and Johnny Campbell, Concord; sister Judy C. Blake, Kannapolis; and two grandchildren.

Services: 11 a.m. Friday, Whitley’s Funeral Home Chapel, Kannapolis, conducted by the Rev.Raymond Davis. Burial, Carolina Memorial Park, Kannapolis.

Ralph ‘R.C.’ Carr

CHARLOTTE — Ralph “R.C.” Carr, 66, 6121 Amberly Lane, died Sunday in Huntersville Oaks, Huntersville, after several weeks of illness.

Born April 3, 1933, in Mount Ulla, Mr. Carr was a son of Hettie Carr Wilkerson of Salisbury and the late Everett Rhinehart. He attended Rowan County schools and retired from PYA/Monarch in Charlotte.

He was a member of Union Missionary Baptist Church, where he was vice president and a past president of the usher board, second vice president of the Laymen’s League, a member of the trustee board and church bus driver.

He was also a member of Central Mecklenburg Association of Ushers and a Mason.

In addition to his mother, he is survived by sons Ralph, Schyler and Kyle Carr, all of Salisbury, and Fred Sifford, Granite Quarry; stepsons Allen and Corey Johnson, both of Charlotte; daughters Valire Carr Copeland, Pittsburgh, Pa., and Marcella Denise Carr, Salisbury; stepdaughter, Tamara Johnson, Charlotte; brother Nathaniel Reddick, Salisbury; sisters Mary E. Miller, Cleveland, Anne McNeal, Cheraw, S.C., Barbara R. Allison, Brooklyn, N.Y., and Patricia Johnson, High Point; 16 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and a companion, Sarah R. Teeter of the home.

Services: 2 p.m. Friday, Shady Grove Baptist Church, Bear Poplar, conducted by the Rev. C.W. Pratt and the Rev. Roger Williamson. Burial, church cemetery.

Howard Russell Fincher

Howard Russell Fincher, 94, of Salisbury, died Tuesday (Oct. 5, 1999) at Northeast Medical Center, Concord, after a period of declining health.

He was born Dec. 11, 1905 in Union County, the son of the late Nellis Richardson Fincher and the late Lloyd L. Fincher.

Mr. Fincher was educated in the Union County schools and retired after working 44 years with Cannon Mills. He was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church.

His first wife, Eulalie Neal Fincher preceded him in death, as did his second wife, Lena S. Fincher.

Survivors include:sons James Reid Fincher of Kannapolis, Billy Ray Fincher of Charlotte; step son Jimmy Thomas of Jacksonville, Fla., and stepdaughter Sara Faulkner of Thomasville. He is also survived by one grandchild, four step-grandchildren and one great-grand stepchild.

Services: 3 p.m. Thursday, in James C. Lyerly Chapel of Lyerly Funeral Home, the Rev. Mary Peters, associate pastor, St. John’s Lutheran Church officiating. Burial will be in Rowan Memorial Park.

J. Keith Hilliard

LEXINGTON — James Keith Hilliard, 48, Brown Street, died Monday (Oct. 4, 1999) in Morganton from injuries sustained in an automobile accident.

Born Aug. 21, 1951, in Siler City, Mr. Hilliard was a son of William Dalton Hilliard, Wilmington, and the late Virginia Mae Ridenhour Hilliard. Employed by Pro Cycle in Morganton, he earlier worked at PPGIndustries in Lexington. He was a volunteer with South Lexington Fire Department and a Baptist.

Survivors , in addition to his father, include wife Wanda Barnhart Hilliard; sons Brian Hilliard, Lexington, and Michael Wayne Snider, of the home; daughter Erica Lynn Hilliard, of the home; brothers Garry and Ricky Hilliard, both of Lexington; sisters Mrs. Greg (Fern)Warner, Lexington, and Mrs. Bob (Deborah)Citrano, Wilmington; and three grandchildren.

Services: 2 p.m. Thursday, Davidson Funeral Home Chapel, conducted by the Rev. Charles Poole. Burial, Forest Hill Memorial Park.

Visitation: 6:30-8:30 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. At other times the family will be at the home on Brown Street.

 

Clark Brown Holt

DAVIDSON — The funeral will be Friday for Clark Brown Holt, 59, 5241 Albrook Drive, who died Tuesday (Oct. 5, 1999) at his home after three months of illness.

Born Feb. 14, 1940, in Rowan County, Mr. Holt was a son of Helen Cannon Holt, Kannapolis, and the late James Carl Holt. He worked seven years as a comptroller for J and J MachineryTransport and was a member of Mooresville Church of God.

Survivors, in addition to his mother, include his wife Lynda K. Orren Holt; daughter Cindy Hicks, Weddington; son Jon C. Holt, Atlanta, Ga.; stepdaughter Sandra Gerren, Davidson; brothers Andrew Holt, David Holt, and J.C. Holt all of Kannapolis, Sam Holt, Lancaster, S.C.; sister Mattie Henry, Kannapolis, and five grandchildren.

Services: 2 p.m. Friday, Mooresville Church of God, with the Re. Ken Looney, the Rev. Ted Burke and Dr. Bill Sheeks presiding. Burial, Carolina Memorial Park Plaza Mausoleum.

William Hampton Jowers

LEXINGTON — William Hampton Jowers of 5 Victor St. died Tuesday (Oct. 5, 1999) at Lexington Memorial Hospital.

Born May 12, 1947, in Angelus Community, Jefferson, S.C., he was the son of the late Geneva Raley and Luther Jowers. He was educated in the public schools of South Carolina.

Jowers had retired after 25 years as an inspector with Sealy, Inc.

He was a member of Shadyside Presbyterian Church.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Greer-Jowers of the home; son Harold Presnell; five brothers, Louis Jetterson, James Sanford of New York, George Jowers of Kershaw, S.C., and Daniel and Johnny Jowers of Lexington; three sisters, Susie Jowers of New York, Mattie Jowers of Harrisburg and Saraha Jowers Jones of Salisbury; and two grandchildren.

Services: 11 a.m. Thursday, Shadyside Presbyterian Church, Lexington, by the Rev. James E. Gaskins. Burial, Mt. Elon United Methodist Church Cemetery.

Visitation: 10-11 a.m. Thursday, at the church.

 

Lillie Mae Russell Lisenby

ALBEMARLE — Lillie Mae Russell Lisenby, 90, 17265-A St. Martin Road, died Monday (Oct. 4, 1999) at Stanly Memorial Hospital.

Born Feb. 23, 1909, in StanlyCounty, Mrs. Lisenby was a daughter of the late Millard T. and Ida Howell Russell. A graduate of Brevard College and Catawba College, she taught school in the Stanly County school for 43 years. She was a member of the Retired Teachers Association, the AARP and was an active member of Pine Grove United Methodist Church and the Eastern Star.

Her husband, Thomas H. Lisenby, died in 1984.

Survivors include sister Frances Henderson, Albemarle.

Services: 1 p.m. Friday, Pine Grove United Methodist Church, conducted by the Rev.Curran Welch and the Rev. Martha Welch. The body will be placed in the church at 12:30. Burial, church cemetery.

Visitation: 6-8 p.m. Thursday, Stanly Funeral Home.

Melton Vealey Lomax

THOMASVILLE — Melton Vealey Lomax, 79, 807 Liberty Drive, died Monday (Oct. 4, 1999).

Born Dec. 4, 1919, in Davidson County, Mr. Lomax was a son of the late WilliamCarl and Sula Morris Lomax. A veteran of the U.S. Army, he served in the European Theater during World War II. He served as the DavidsonCounty Register of Deeds from 1946 to 1958. He owned and operated Lomax Cafe and Grocery Store.

He was a member of Davidson County DAV and a representative for District 8 DAVVolunteer Services. He was also a member of the VFW, Woodmen of the World and was affiliated with Habitat for Humanity. A member of Southside Baptist Church, he attended Refuge Baptist Church.

His first wife, Hattie Corriher Lomax, preceded him in death.

Survivors include wife Mittie Frances McDowell; daughters Mrs. Lindsey (Ramonia Lomax) Harris, Myrtle Beach, S.C., Mrs. Darrell (Sharon Lomax) Ridge, Sophia, Mrs. William (Patty Batten) Anderson, Lexington, and Mrs. George (Faye Batten)Kluttz, of Salisbury; sister Frances Rose, Thomasville; brother Harold Lomax, Thomasville; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Services: 2 p.m. Thursday, J.C. Green &Sons Funeral Home Chapel, conducted by the Rev. Heath Kennedy. Burial,Holly Hill Memorial Park.

Visitation: 7-9 tonight at the funeral home. At other times the family will be at the home on Liberty Drive.

Hazel Viola Loflin Lyerly

EAST SPENCER — Hazel Viola Loflin Lyerly, 84, of Deland, Fla., formerly of East Spencer, died Monday (Oct. 4, 1999) at Alliance Nursing Center in Deland after a brief illness. She moved to Florida in January 1997.

Mrs. Lyerly was born March 18, 1915, in Rowan County, the daughter of the late Annie Goodman Loflin and the late Fred Alexander Loflin.

She was educated in Rowan County Schools and was a homemaker and a piano teacher.

Mrs. Lyerly was a member of Christ Lutheran Church in East Spencer, where she served as organist and pianist for 65 years. She was a member of the Women of the E.L.C.A. and the church Bible class.

Her husband, Grover L. Lyerly, preceded her in death Sept. 5, 1977.

Mrs. Lyerly is survived by daughters Barbara Lyerly Goins of Leesburg, Fla., and Judith Lynn Kahl of Hunt Valley, Md.; sister Cora Lee Shuping of Salisbury; three grandchildren, two step grandchildren and four step great-grandchildren.

Services: 11 a.m. Friday, Lyerly Funeral Home’s James C. Lyerly Chapel, the Rev. Darrell Norris, pastor of United Lutheran Church officiating. Burial, Rowan Memorial Park.

Grady Ribelin

CLEVELAND — Grady Ribelin, 83, of Cleveland, died Wednesday (Oct. 6, 1999) at Autumn Care of Salisbury.

Powles Funeral Home, Rockwell, is in charge.

 

Doyle William Roberson

ALBEMARLE — Doyle William Roberson, 79, 28691 Canton Road, died Monday (Oct. 4, 1999) at Stanly Memorial Hospital.

Born April 18, 1920, in Maryville, Tenn., Mr. Roberson was a son of the late Robert Lincoln and Minnie Roberson. A retired taxi driver, he was last employed by C and M Taxi.

Survivors include wife Lillian Faye Roberson, New London; daughters Vivian Diane Hartsell, Richfield, and Linda Mae Slusher, Hendersonville; sons Benny Roberson, New London, Dennis Roberson, Richfield, and Lawrence W. Roberson, Albemarle; sisters Maxine Curlee and Marie Misenheimer, both of Richfield, and Helen Frick, Albemarle; brothers Ernest, Glenn, Herbert, Reid and Sam Roberson, all of Albemarle; 10 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Services: Memorial, 10 a.m. today, Seventh Day Adventist Church, conducted by the Rev. Timothy Sheridan.

Visitation: None.

Hartsell Funeral Home is in charge.

 

Rose Saleeby

Rose Saleeby of Statesville Blvd. , widow of longtime Salisbury businessman Elias Alexander Saleeby and community benefacator, died of a massive stroke this morning at 10:05 at Rowan Regional Medical Center.

Arrangements are incomplete.

 

Robert Faires ‘Bob’ Stone

Robert Faires “Bob” Stone, 73, 217 Statesville Blvd., died Monday (Oct. 4, 1999) at his home.

Born July 10, 1926, in Charlotte, Mr. Stone was a son of the late Esther Faires and Joseph James Stone. Educated in Asheville schools, he graduated from N.C. State University in Raleigh with a degree in architecture.

He was a U.S. Army veteran, serving during World War II in the South Pacific.

Formerly associated with John Ramsay &Associates, he was still active with Robert R. Stone AIA, which he had operated for 40 years. He designed buildings and additions for the Rowan-Salisbury schools, including North Rowan, Knollwood and China Grove elementary schools and China Grove Middle School.

He also designed the Salisbury Post press room, First Union Bank on West Innes Street, Farmers & Merchants Bank in Granite Quarry and on Jake Alexander Boulevard and Rufty-Holmes Senior Center. He did design work for the Davie County schools, Livingstone and Rowan-Cabarrus Community colleges and the Rowan County ABCBoard.

He was a life member of the Rowan County Vocational Workshop board of directors, serving as president in 1976-77, and a member of the Salisbury Planning Board for nine years and vice chairman for six years.

He was also a member of St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, Salisbury Kiwanis Club and the American Institute of Architects.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Helen Fortinberry Stone on May 21, 1987, and a son, Robert Faires Stone Jr., on Feb. 21, 1978.

Survivors include daughter Rosemary Stone Humphries, Niceville, Fla., and three grandsons.

Services: 11 a.m. Thursday, St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, conducted by the Rev. Robert E. Blackburn Jr., interim rector. Burial, City Memorial Park.

Visitation: 6-8 tonight, Summersett Funeral Home.

Ia Xiong

ALBEMARLE — Ia Xiong, 58, 1231 Springhaven Circle, died Tuesday (Oct. 5, 1999) at Stanly Memorial Hospital.

Born Dec. 3, 1940, in Sayaboury, Laos, Mrs. Xiong was a daughter of the late Va Leng and Chue Xiong. She was a homemaker.

Survivors include husband Choua Tong Xiong; daughters Bao Xiong, Hickory, Blia Xiong, Fresno, Calif., Ger Xiong, Sacramento, Calif., and Yee Xiong, Charlotte; sons Chai Xiong, Stockton, Calif., Chong Bee, Khou, Lee and Richard Xiong, all of Albemarle; and 32 grandchildren.

Services: 2 p.m. Sunday, Hartsell Funeral Home. Burial, Norview Gardens, Norwood.

Visitation: 24 hours Friday and Saturday and until 2 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. The family will be at the home on Springhaven Drive.
