Obituaries

            Norma Coley Brewer

ALBEMARLE - Norma Coley Brewer, 68, 16354 Recap Road, died Friday (Oct. 1, 1999) at Carolinas Medical Center, Charlotte.

Born July 1, 1931, in Stanly County, Mrs. Brewer was a daughter of the late Daisy Ophelia Burris and Joe Lee Coley. She had retired from Stanly Knitting Mills, where she was an inspector. She was a member of Trinity Baptist Church.

Her first husband, Flay T. Efird, preceded her in death.

Survivors include husband Glenn William Brewer, Albemarle; daughters Stacy Lynn Brewer, Charlotte, and Tammy Shackelford, Stanfield; sisters Joann Harward, Charlotte, and Renda Huneycutt, Albemarle; brother James Russell, Peachland; and four grandchildren.

Services: Graveside, 4 p.m. Sunday, Silver Springs Baptist Church cemetery, Norwood, conducted by the Rev. Furman Wilhoit.

Visitation: 6-8 p.m. tonight, Hartsell Funeral Home, Albemarle.

 

Kenneth H. Dunlop

Kenneth H. Dunlop, 82, of Green Valley, Ariz., formerly of Salisbury, died Saturday (Sept. 25, 1999).

Born June 6, 1917, in Schuylkill Haven, Pa. Mr.Dunlop taught at Crossnore School near Asheville after his graduation from Catawba College. He operated Salisbury Business College from 1945 until 1959, when he moved to Philadelphia.

He was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church during the time the family resided in Salisbury. Mr. Dunlop was a member of the Masonic Order Grand Lodge of Pennsylvania and the Green Valley Lodge of the BPO Elks.

During World War II he served in the Army Air Corps in the China-Burma-India theater. From 1962 until his retirement in 1987 he was administrative assistant to William S. Fishman, founder and chairman of the board of ARAServices, now known as Aramark Inc.

He moved to Green Valley in 1994.

Survivors include sister Georgine Ehly Miller, Lancaster, Pa.; sons George Dunlop, Arlington, Va. and Tom Dunlop, Reno, Nev.; and two grandchildren.

Private memorial services will be held in Salisbury.

 

Betty Joyce Vorhees Farrar

Betty Joyce Vorhees Farrar, 70, 165 Forest Meadow Lane, died Friday (Oct. 1, 1999) at Rowan Regional Medical Center.

Born June 19, 1929, in Detroit, Mich. , Mrs. Farrar was a daughter of the late Edith M. Ormsbee and Clyde F. Vorhees. A graduate of the Detroit public schools, Mrs. Farrar was a licensed real estate agent.

Survivors include husband Richard G. Farrar; son Richard G. Farrar, Son, Mooresville; daughters Carol S. Deime, Columbus, Ohio, and Patricia Farrar, Tempe, Ariz.; and sister Patricia Benson, Bradenton, Fla.

Services:There will be no services. The body will be cremated.

Rowan Funeral Services is in charge.

 

Jacquelyn Smith Graham

Jacquelyn Smith Graham, 63, of Salisbury, died Friday (Oct. 1, 1999) at her residence after a period of declining health.

Born Dec. 9, 1936, in Elberton, Ga., Mrs. Graham was a daughter of the late Sybil Evelyn Tiller and Howard Jackson Smith. Educated at Elberton, Ga. schools she was a homemaker and member of St. Matthew’s Episcopal Church.

Her husband, Joseph Columbus Graham Sr., preceded her in death with a daughter, Doris Graham Brown.

Survivors include sons Paul Douglas Graham, Joseph Columbus Graham Jr., James Richard Graham, and Donald Scott Graham, all of Salisbury; daughters Jacquelyn G. Harris, Black Stock, S.C., Joyce E. Hoover, Patsy L. Gallimore, and Linda M. Jaramillo, all of Salisbury; brothers Harry Smith, Elberton, Ga., Wayne Smith, Atlanta, Ga., and Bill Smith, Pa.; sister Janelle Waters, Elberton, Ga.; 23 grandchildren; and 12 great grandchildren.

Services:2 p.m. Sunday, St. Matthew’s Episcopal Church, Salisbury, conducted by the Rev. Wendell Phillips, pastor. Burial, family plot in the church cemetery.

Visitation:7-8:30 p.m. tonight, Lyerly Funeral Home, 515 S. Main St.

Robert Coyted Kinder Jr.

HAMPTONVILLE - Robert Coyted Kinder Jr., 81, 895 Troy Mill Road, died Thursday (Sept. 30, 1999) at Iredell Memorial Hospital, Statesville, after an extended illness.

Survivors include daughter Roberta Sue K. Gobble, Mocksville.

Services:2 p.m. Sunday, Harmony United Methodist Church, conducted by the Rev. Donnie Durham and the Rev. Edward Mitchum. Burial, church cemetery.

CHARLOTTE - Jeffery Franklin “Jeff”Melchor, 312 Clover Hitch Drive, died Friday (Oct. 1, 1999) at his residenc.

Mary Elizabeth Morris

ALBEMARLE - Mary Elizabeth Andrews Morris, 73, 503 Graham Street, died Thursday (Sept. 30, 1999) at Stanly Memorial Hospital.

Born Jan. 29, 1926, in Stanly County, Ms. Morris was a daughter of the late Minnie Alice Eury and Thomas Rufus Andrews. Retired from American and Efird she was a spinner.

She was preceded in death by a son, William Wayne Morris.

Survivors include brothers Charles and Willie Andrews, both of Albemarle; sisters Helen Louise Furr and Ruby A. Smith, both of Albemarle, and Mildred Varner, Troy; three grandchildren; and Edward Lee Springer, her companion for 34 years, Albemarle.

Annie Bringle Poteat Cornatzer, 91, Salisbury, died Friday (Oct. 1, 1999) at Brian Center Health & Rehabilitation Center.

Jacquelyn Smith Graham

Jacquelyn Smith Graham, 62, Salisbury, died Friday (Oct. 1, 1999) at her residence after a period of declining health.

Born Dec. 9, 1936, in Elberton, Ga., Mrs. Graham was the daughter of the late Howard Jackson and Sybil Evelyn Tiller Smith. Educated in the Elberton, Ga., schools, she was a homemaker and a member of St. Matthew’s Episcopal Church.

Mildred Gibbons Wilson

Mildred Lucille Gibbons Wilson, 76, Salisbury, died Friday (Oct. 1, 1999) at Rowan Regional Medical Center after a period of declining health.

Born Oct. 4, 1922, in Rowan County, Mrs. Wilson was the daughter of the late Anderson Cicero and Bessie Walton Gibbons. A graduate of Woodleaf High School, she had retired from Erwin Mills in Cooleemee.

Mrs. Wilson was a Red Cross volunteer at Rowan Regional Medical Center, the Hefner VA Medical Center and the bloodmobile. She was a member of Gay’s Chapel United Methodist Church and a former member of Salisbury Chapter 117, Order of the Eastern Star.

Her husband, William Paul Wilson, preceded her in death.

Survivors include son Sherman Roe Wilson, Salisbury; sisters Rebecca G. Albert, Kernersville, Patsy G. Ellis, Winston-Salem, and Joyce Ann G. DiRienzo, Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; and one grandchild.

Services: Graveside, 3 p.m. Sunday, Rowan Memorial Park, conducted by the Rev. Don Newman, pastor of Gay’s Chapel United Methodist Church.

Visitation: 7-8:30 tonight, Lyerly Funeral Home.

Robert Duard Reavis

MOCKSVILLE - Robert Duard Reavis, 81, of Duard Reavis Road, died Thursday (Sept. 30, 1999) at Forsyth Medical Center, Winston-Salem, after a short illness.

Born Jan. 22, 1918, in Davie County, Mr. Reavis was a son of the late William Dudley and Lula Mae Harkey Reavis. Retired from the Lily Co., he had previously been with Heritage Furniture Co. for 28 years. He had also served the Davie County Sheriff’s Department as a special deputy for 35 years.

A Mason for 52 years, he was a 32nd-degree member of Mocksville Lodge 134. He was a charter member of the North Davie Ruritan and a member and past governor of the Moose Lodge. He was also a member of the Davie County Rescue Squad, the Board of Trustees of the Davie County Hospital and Liberty Baptist Church, where he had sung with the church choir and quartet and was a member of the Men’s Bible Class.

Survivors include his wife of 63 years, Dessie Weatherman Reavis; sons Carl Richard Reavis, and Duard Lowell Reavis, both of Mocksville, and Lonnie Ray Reavis, Drexel; daughter Sandra Kay Ward, Savannah, Ga.; twin brother Donald Reavis, Mocksville; sister Jessie Whitaker Howell, Mocksville; 12 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.

Services:2 p.m. Sunday, Liberty Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Marvin Blackburn. Burial, with Masonic Rites, church cemetery.

Visitation: 6-8 tonight, Eaton Funeral Home. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes prior to the service.

Billie Lemicks Russell

MOCKSVILLE - Billie Lemicks Russell, 62, Creason Road, died Thursday (Sept. 30, 1999) at his home.

Born April 11, 1937, in Randolph County, Mr. Russell was a son of the late Loretta Aldred and Edward Glenn Russell. He was employed with Norandel-Salisbury.

He attended Cooleemee Church of God and was a member of the American Legion and VFW Post 1119. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1954 to 1959.

Survivors include wife of 40 years, Berilene O’Neal Russell; sons Terry and Darrel Russell, both of Cooleemee; daughters Billie R. Weathers, Salisbury, and Teresa R. Rusher, Cooleemee; brothers James Russell, Virginia, Kenneth Russell, China Grove, Donald Russell, Sophia, Millard Russell, Charlotte, and Johnny Russell, Lewisville; sisters Janice Collins and Mary Smith, both of Salisbury; eight grandchildren; and five great grandchildren.

Services:2 p.m. Sunday, Cooleemee Church of God, Cooleemee, conducted by the Rev. Dale Breidinger, the Rev. Jimmy Lancaster, and the Rev. Bobby Shinault, officiating. Burial, Legion Memorial Park, Cooleemee.

Visitation: 7-9 p.m. tonight, Davie Funeral Home.

 

Mildred O. Wood

Mildred O. Wood, 80, 1916 Ganell Ave., died Friday (Oct. 1, 1999) at Rowan Regional Medical Center.

Summersett Funeral Home is in charge.
