Violet Smith Armsworthy

MOCKSVILLE — Violet Irene Smith Armsworthy, 90, Mocksville, died Sunday (Nov. 28, 1999) at Forsyth Medical Center, Winston-Salem.

Born April 1, 1909, in Davie County, Mrs. Armsworthy was a daughter of the late Floyd and Josephine Tucker Smith. A homemaker, she was a lifelong member of Bethlehem United Methodist Church.

Her husband, Boss Rensy Armsworthy, died in 1978.

Survivors include sons Ricky G. and Barry R. Armsworthy, both of Advance; Maxine A. Spillman and Sherry A. Franco, both of Advance; sisters Ruby S. McKnight, Grey S. Robertson and Jessie Hodson, all of Advance; two grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

Services: Graveside, 11 a.m. Wednesday, Bethlehem United Methodist Church cemetery, conducted by the Rev. Mark Weekley.

Visitation: 7-8:30 tonight, Davie Funeral Service.

Memorials: Bethlehem United Methodist Church, Building Fund, 321 Redland Road, Advance, N.C. 27006.

 

Claude John Burgess

OAKBORO — Claude John Burgess, 84, 10041-B Highway 138, died Monday (Nov. 29, 1999) at his home.

Born Dec. 5, 1914, in Stanly County, Mr. Burgess was a son of the late William Mitchell and Sarah Louellen Cagle Burgess. He was a farmer.

Survivors include wife Margaret Lucile Allen Burgess; sons Darrell and John Burgess, both of Oakboro; daughters Carolyn Carpenter, Norwood, Judy Hinson, Marshville, and Jean Little, Oakboro; twin sister Maude Barbee, Oakboro; another sister, Emma Tucker, Albemarle; 12 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Services: 2 p.m. Wednesday, Hartsell Funeral Home, Albemarle, conducted by the Rev. Aaron Brooks. Burial, Smiths Grove Primitive Baptist Church cemetery.

Visitation: 6-8 tonight at the funeral home. At other times the family will be at the home on N.C. 138.

Bessie Lee Barbee Helms

OAKBORO — Bessie Lee Barbee Helms, 85, 9529 Highway 138, died Sunday (Nov. 28, 1999) at Stanly Memorial Hospital, Albemarle.

Born Jan. 6, 1914, in Stanly County, Mrs. Helms was a daughter of the late Titus Franklin and Nealie Ann Whitley Barbee. She was former owner of Bessie’s Florist Shop.

Her husband, John Roy Helms, died in 1973.

Survivors include son Roy Helms, Oakboro; brother Luther Barbee, Albemarle; sisters Florence Chaney, Albemarle, and Edna Hartsell,New London; three grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Services: 4 p.m. today, Liberty Hill Primitive Baptist Church, conducted by Elder Rom Kerley and Dr. Terrell Watts. At other times the family will be at the home of son Roy Helms, 9519 Highway 138.

Hartsell Funeral Home, Albemarle, is in charge.

 

Charles Max Hill Jr.

WAYNESBORO — Charles Max Hill Jr., 41, 160 S. Charlotte Ave., died Saturday (Nov. 27, 1999) in Waynesboro.

Born Sept. 19, 1958, in Concord, Mr. Hill was the son of the late Frances L. Shue Hill and Charles M. Hill, Salisbury. He was employed in the shipping and receiving department of Burris RefrigeratedServices, Lyndhurst.

Survivors, in addition to his father and stepmother, include wife Cynthia Bragg Hill; daughter Ashley Nicole Hill; stepmother Judy Hill, Salisbury; and sister Betty Donahue, Salisbury.

Services: 11 a.m. Wednesday, Reynolds Funeral Service, conducted by the Rev. Bill Davis. Burial, Greenfield Pentecostal Church cemetery.

Visitation: 7-8 tonight at the funeral home. At other times the family will be at the home on South Charlotte Avenue.

 

Gladys Fitzgerald Jarratt

LINWOOD — Gladys Fitzgerald Jarratt, 96, 2593 Swicegood Road, died Sunday (Nov. 28, 1999) at Rowan Regional Medical Center, Salisbury.

Born April 19, 1903, in Davidson County, Mrs. Jarratt was a daughter of the late Charles Francis and Mary Elizabeth “Molly” Meacham Fitzgerald. She was a member of Center Hill Baptist Church, where she was active in Young’s Bible Class. She taught Sunday school for many years.

Her husband, James Wade Jarratt, whom she married Jan. 15, 1927, died Sept. 14, 1979. A son, James Alton Jarratt, also preceded her in death.

Survivors include daughter Mrs. K. Wayne (Alma)Grubb, Churchland; son Edward Lynn Jarratt, of the home; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Services: Graveside, 2 p.m. Wednesday, Center Hill Baptist Church cemetery, conducted by the Rev. Lamar Moore.

Visitation: The family will be at the home of daughter Alma Grubb, 4094 Sowers Road, Churchland community.

Memorials: Center Hill Baptist Church, 3759 Highway 8, Lexington, N.C. 27292; or donor’s choice.

Robert ‘Rob’ Krider Jr.

EAST SPENCER — The funeral will be Thursday for Robert Lewis “Rob” Krider Jr., 46, 99 Weant St., who died Saturday (Nov. 27, 1999) at Rowan Regional Medical Center, Salisbury, after a week of serious illness.

Services: 2 p.m. Thursday, Noble and Kelsey Funeral Home’s R.A. Kelsey Memorial Chapel, Salisbury, conducted by the Rev. Willie Aldrich. Burial, Oakwood Cemetery, Salisbury.

Visitation: 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

 

Nova Lee B. McDonald

CHINA GROVE — Nova Lee Brotherton McDonald, 93, formerly of Shue Road, died Monday (Nov. 29, 1999)at Big Elm Nursing Home, Kannapolis.

Born Sept. 16, 1906, in Lincoln County, Mrs. McDonald was a daughter of the late Sidney Allen and Nannie Lou Cashion Brotherton. Educated in the Lincoln County schools, she had retired from Linn Mills, Landis. She was a member of Webb’s ChapelMethodist Church in Lincoln County.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Percy L. McDonald, a son, Arnold “Bo” McDonald, and a daughter, Christine Mack.

Survivors include daughters Maxine Strickland, Salisbury, and Colleen Upright, Kannapolis; six grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

Services: 7 p.m. Wednesday, Northcrest Chapel, Linn-Honeycutt Funeral Home, China Grove, conducted by the Rev. James Faggart. Burial, 11 a.m. Thursday, Webb’s Chapel Methodist Church, Lincoln County.

Visitation: 6-7 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. At other times the family will be at the home of daughter Colleen Upright, 6434 Miller Road, Kannapolis.

 

Hannah Whitten Morris

KANNAPOLIS — The funeral will beWednesday for Hannah Sanford Whitten Morris, 74, formerly of Pine Street, who died Monday (Nov. 29, 1999) at Brian Center Health and Retirement, Mooresville, after 11 months of declining health and three months of serious illness.

Born June 15, 1925, in Lumpkin County, Ga., Mrs. Morris was a daughter of the late Julia M. Sanford. A homemaker, she had formerly worked at Cannon Mills, Plant 1, No. 7 weave room.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, Vie Cletus Whitten, and her second husband, George Morris.

Survivors include daughters Hannah Janet Hilton, Kannapolis, Judy Montgomery, Rising Sun, Md., and Eyvonne Penley, Statesville; son Vie Junior Whitten, Kannapolis; 11 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

Survivors: 3:30 p.m. Wednesday, Lady’s Funeral Home Chapel, conducted by the Rev. Marler Starnes. Burial,Carolina Memorial Park.

Visitation: 7-8:30 tonight at the funeral home. At other times the family will be at their respective homes.

 

John K. Nall

John Kade Nall, 51, 110 Mink Drive, died Monday (Nov. 29, 1999) at Rowan Regional Medical Center.

Lady’s Funeral Home, Kannapolis, is in charge.

 

Flake ‘Bus’ Pope

CHINA GROVE — Flake Alexander “Bus”Pope, 84, 1270 Partee Lane, died Monday (Nov. 29, 1999) at Brian Center Health and Rehabilitation, Salisbury, after two months of serious illness.

Born Aug. 30, 1915, in Rowan County, Mr. Pope was a son of the late Frank and Ida Holt Pope. Educated in the Rowan County schools, he had retired as a nursing assistant at the Salisbury VAMedical Center.

He was a member of Sandy Ridge AMEZion Church, Landis, where he was on the trustee board and the life members council. A U.S. Navy veteran, he served during World War II. He was also a member of J.C. Price American Legion Post 107.

Survivors include wife Inez Morrison Pope; daughter Carolyn P. Hinton, ChinaGrove; sisters Audrey Simmons, Flat Rock, Elnora Ramseur, Landis, and Doretha Hall, Statesville; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Services: 12:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sandy Ridge AME Zion Church, Landis, conducted by the Rev. Bobby L. Smith. Burial, National Cemetery,Salisbury. Military rites by Rowan Veterans Council.

Visitation: Noon Wednesday at the church. At other times the family will be at the home of daughter Carolyn P. Hinton, 1275 Partee Lane.

Noble and Kelsey Funeral Home, Salisbury, is in charge.
