Pole presents a problem for pickup

BY MARK WINEKA
SALISBURY POST

A pickup truck’s impact with a utility pole snapped the pole and led to two other accidents this morning north of Spencer on U.S. 29.

The 1987 Nissan pickup’s driver, Nicholas B. Fink, 21, of Lexington, was in surgery this morning at Rowan Regional Medical Center to repair serious cuts he received when his northbound truck hit the pole.

The snapped pole fell across both the northbound and southbound lanes, placing dangerous live wires on the road.

A southbound vehicle ran into the wires, but the driver was not injured, the highway patrol said. A Spencer woman was not as lucky.

Her northbound Aerostar van ran into the utility lines, causing her van to overturn and skid on its passenger side.

Kimberly Pauline Newton, 33, benefited from wearing her seatbelt, according to reports. The investigating trooper said she was treated and released for her injuries at Rowan Regional Medical Center.

The morning accident happened about 5:30.

The highway patrol said charges were pending against Fink, who had been drinking.

The pole was 11 feet off the road when Fink hit it.
