Hazel Pope Beaver

Hazel Pope Beaver, 85, formerly of 106 S. Long St., East Spencer, died Thursday (Nov. 25, 1999) at Genesis ElderCare of Salisbury.

Born May 28, 1914, in Rowan County, Mrs. Beaver was a daughter of the late Effie Page and Flake Reid Pope. An inspector at Rickman’s Manufacturing, she had retired in 1976 after 24 years with the company. She was a member of Christ Lutheran Church, East Spencer, where she taught Sunday school, sang in the choir, served on the church council and was a member of WELCA.

Her husband, W.R. Beaver, died in March 1953.

Survivors include daughters Mrs. John (Ann) Hinson, Hickory, and Mrs. Gilbert (Joyce) Sprinkle Jr., Rockwell; brothers Ray Pope, Titusville, Fla., and Jim Pope, Knoxville, Tenn.; sisters Virginia Ludwick, Concord, Helen Medlin, Charlotte, and Betty Duiser, Roanoke, Va.; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Services:3 p.m. Sunday, Summersett Memorial Chapel, conducted by the Rev. Craig Sigmon, pastor, St. James Lutheran Church, Rockwell. Burial, Chestnut Hill Cemetery.

Visitation: 7-8:30 p.m. Saturday, at the funeral home.

Arthur Lee Hall

MACON, Ga. — Arthur Lee Hall, 66, of Macon, died Wednesday (Nov. 24, 1999) in a local hospital. He was a native of Salisbury, N.C.

Mr. Hall was the son of the late William Thomas and Floride Griffin Hall. Retired from Southern Railway, he was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War. He was a member of Wolihin Masonic Lodge 390.

Survivors include wife Margie Hall; children Lynn Hall Harmon, Valdosta, and Robin, Artie and Donna Hall, all of Macon; sisters Clarice Luther and Elsie Phillips, both of Salisbury, N.C., Alma Ellenburg, Spencer, N.C., Margie Crowell, Granite Quarry, N.C., and Jean Peeler, Rockwell, N.C.; brothers Larry Hall, Kannapolis, N.C., Ronald Hall, Selma, N.C., and George Hall, Massachusetts; and seven grandchildren.

Services:Graveside, 3 p.m. Macon Memorial Park Cemetery.

Visitation: 7-9 tonight, Macon Memorial Park Funeral Home.

She is survived by a sister, Lililis Ijames Penninger, Woodleaf.

Charles T. Leonard Jr.

Charles Thomas Leonard Jr., 78, of Seneca, S.C., died Wednesday (Nov. 24, 1999) at Oconee Memorial Hospital in Seneca after several years of declining health. He was a Rowan County native.

Born Dec. 12, 1920, Mr. Leonard was a son of the late Ora Bell Kennerly and Charles Thomas Leonard. He was a graduate of Boyden High School. A World War II veteran of the U.S. Army Air Corps, he received the Air Medal and the Distinguished Flying Cross.

Mr. Leonard was employed for 30 years with NASA Contractors and was supervisor of launch support at Kennedy Space Center, Fla., by the time he retired. He was a member of Stallings Memorial Baptist Church and Harold B. Jarrett American Legion Post 342.

Survivors include wife Dorothy Loflin Leonard, whom he married July 2, 1941; son Michael Leonard, Clemson, S.C.; brothers J. Edward Leonard, Spencer, and Jack W. Leonard, Salisbury; sister Mrs. Charles (Margaret) Summers, Salisbury; and three granddaughters.

Services:Graveside, 10 a.m. Saturday, Rowan Memorial Park, conducted by the Rev. Mark Anders, minister of Stallings Memorial Baptist Church.

Visitation: 7-8:30 tonight, Summersett Funeral Home.

Melva Sowers Lowman

Melva Sowers Lowman, 79, 206 Sills Drive, died Wednesday (Nov. 24, 1999) at Rowan Regional Medical Center.

Born Aug. 6, 1920, in Rowan County, Mrs. Lowman was a daughter of the late May Jane Pepper and Moses Sowers. A homemaker, she was educated in the Rowan County schools. She was a member of Oakland Heights Baptist Church, where she was a Sunday school teacher. She was a former president of the Golden Years Club.

Her husband, Howard James Lowman, died Sept. 30, 1998.

Survivors include daughter Carol L. Steelman, Salisbury; brother Earl Sowers, Salisbury; sister Ruth Walser, Salisbury; four grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Services:2 p.m. Saturday, Oakland Heights Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Edward Bitner, pastor of Oakland Heights Baptist Church, and the Rev. Sy Ponds, pastor of Providence Baptist Church, East Spencer. The body will be taken to the church at 1:30. Burial, Rowan Memorial Park.

Laura Willams Morgan

STANFIELD — Laura Williams Morgan, 72, 1807 Polk Ford Road, died Thursday (Nov. 25, 1999)at her residence.

Born April 16, 1927, in Stanly County, Mrs. Morgan was a daughter of the late Sidney and Rettie Barbee Williams. A retired seamstress, she was last employed with Comar in Locust. She was a founding member of Kinza Memorial Baptist Church.

Survivors include husband Homer Lane Morgan; sons Don and Ralph Morgan, both of Stanfield; daughters Brenda McLaurin, Oakboro, Kathryn Reames, Stanfield, and Jo Ann Morton, Albemarle; brothers Roy Williams and Joseph Williams, both of Mount Pleasant, and Charlie Williams, Locust; sister Aleta Furr, Stanfield; 19 grandchildren; and 22 great-grandchildren.

Services:2 p.m. Saturday, Kinza Memorial Baptist Church, Stanfield, conducted by the Rev. Bobby Mowery and the Rev. Sam Hopkins. Burial, church cemetery.

Visitation: 7-9 tonight, Hartsell Funeral Home of Midland. At other times the family will be at the residence.

Lenora Swann Rice

Lenora Torrence “Skin”Swann Rice, 80, 615 W. Fisher St., died Wednesday (Nov. 24, 1999) at Rowan Regional Medical Center after three days of illness.

Born Aug. 15, 1919, in Cabarrus County, Mrs. Rice was a daughter of the late Illa Howard and George Hoover Torrence. Educated in the Cabarrus County schools, she had retired from Marsh Furniture Store, High Point. She was a member of Macedonia Baptist Church in Concord.

Survivors include sisters Ernestine Hunter and Mildred Robbins, both of Salisbury, and Mary Lou Phillips and Naomi Lipscomb, both of Kannapolis.

Services: 2 p.m. Saturday, Macedonia Baptist Church, Concord, conducted by the Rev. John Leazer Jr., pastor. Burial, church cemetery.

Visitation:1:30 p.m. Saturday, at the church. At other times the family will be at the home of a sister at 717 Partee St.

Noble and Kelsey Funeral Home is in charge.

 

Doris File Ritchie

Doris File Ritchie, 72, of Salisbury, died Friday (Nov. 26, 1999) at the Salisbury Lutheran Home.

Lyerley Funeral Home is in charge.

 

William “Billy” A. Rock III

KANNAPOLIS — William “Billy” A. Rock III, 49, 1466 Oakwood Ave., died Wednesday (Nov. 24, 1999) at Presbyterian Hospital, Charlotte.

Born Sept. 2, 1950, in Lincoln County, Mr. Rock was a son of Dr. William A. Rock Jr. and Lenora Morse Rock of Kannapolis. Employed with Cabarrus Workshop Inc. for several years, he was a member of Bethpage United Methodist Church.

In addition to his parents, he is survived by a sister, Louise Rock Gardner, and a brother, Scott Gardner, both of Concord.

Services: 2 p.m. Saturday, Bethpage United Methodist Church, conducted by the Rev. Randy Foster. The body will be taken to the church at 1:30. Burial, Carolina Memorial Park.

Visitation: 7-8:30 tonight, Whitley’s Funeral Home. At other times the family will be at the residence.

Francis Bowden Seats

MOCKSVILLE — Francis Bowden Seats, 51, N.C. 158 East, died Monday (Nov. 22, 1999)at his residence.

Born April 24, 1948, in Davie County, Mr. Seats was a son of the late Adelaide Bowden and Clyde Franklin Seats. He had retired earlier this year after 22 years as an officer with the N.C. Department of Correction.

Survivors include sons Patrick Seats, Mocksville, and Matthew Seats, Tacoma, Wash.; brother Clyde Seats, Mocksville; and sisters Mrs. J.T. (Martha)Smith Jr. and Mrs. Wayne (Jean) James, both of Mocksville.

Services: Graveside, 2 p.m. Sunday, Oak Grove United Methodist Church cemetery, conducted by the Rev. Norman Frye and the Rev. Charles Stewart.

Visitation: 7-9 p.m. Saturday, Eaton Funeral Service, Mocksville.

Carlesie Peeler

Carlesie “Mother Dear” Barber Witherspoon Peeler, 93, died Tuesday (Nov. 23, 1999) at The Laurels of Salisbury.

Born March 15, 1906, in Rowan County, she was a daughter of the late Victoria Agnes Archie and Lovette Barber. She was educated in the Rowan County schools. A homemaker, she was a member of Southern City AME Zion Church.

Survivors include sons Carter Witherspoon and Harry Witherspoon, both of Philadelphia; eight grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and 13 great-great-grandchildren.

Services:11 a.m. Saturday, Southern City AME Zion Church, conducted by the Rev. Donald C. Holness, pastor. Burial, Oakwood Cemetery.

Visitation: 10:30-11 a.m. Saturday, at the church.

 

Thomas ‘Tom’Wooten

WELCOME —

Born Nov. 16, 1911, in Richmond County, Mr. Wooten was a son of the late James Jesse and Ina Morrison Wooten. He was a retired textile supervisor.

His wife, Carrie Mullinax Wooten, died in October 1995.

Survivors include sons Robert Wooten, Midway, John Wooten, Welcome, James Wooten, Clemmons, Wayne Wooten, Biscoe, and Jerry Wooten, Trinity; daughters Frances Horne, Tyro, Brenda Davis, Lexington, Thelma Norton, Massachusetts, and Alice Callicutt, Troy; 25 grandchildren; and 21 great-grandchildren.

Services:11 a.m. Saturday, Davidson Funeral Home, Hickory Tree Chapel, Lexington, conducted by the Rev. James T. Webb. Burial, Parklawn Memorials Gardens, Winston-Salem.

There will be no formal visitation. The body will remain at the funeral home, while the family will receive friends at their respective homes homes.
