Maggie Arlean Hartsell, 90, Richfield, formerly of Oakboro, died Monday (Nov. 22, 1999) at
Stanly Manor.
Born Jan. 2, 1909, in Stanly County, she was a
daughter of the late Joel and Cora Alice Hatley Hartsell. She was formerly employed as a
winder for Oakboro Cotton Mill.
Surviving are sisters Vassie Cranford, Richfield,
and Lola Fling, Fremont, Ohio.
Services: 3 p.m. Sunday, Lefler Memorial Chapel of
Hartsell Funeral Home, conducted by the Rev. Fred Mitschke. Burial in Hatley Grove
Primitive Church cemetery, Oakboro.
Visitation: 2-3 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
Samuel Edward Duncan III
The funeral will be Friday for Samuel Edward
Duncan III, 58, 606 Lamont St., Johnson City, Tenn., a former Salisbury resident, who died
Wednesday (Nov. 17, 1999) at his home.
Born Dec. 5, 1940, in Reidsville,Mr. Duncan was
the son of the late Dr. Samuel L. Duncan Jr. and Ida Hauser Duncan. He was a graduate of
Booker T. Washington High School, Reidsville, and received a degree in sociology from
Livingstone College. He did further studies at North Carolina State University, Raleigh,
and received an employment counseling certificate.
Mr. Duncan was last employed at the VAMedical
Center Domiciliary in Mountain Home, Tenn. A veteran, he served in the U.S. Air Force
during the Vietnam Era. He was a member of St. Paul AME Zion Church, Johnson City, Tenn.,
and a former member of Soldiers Memorial AME Zion Church.
Survivors include sons Mark E. Duncan and Jamel D.
Jackson, both of Charlotte; daughter Melanee D. Duncan, Charlotte; brother William Parham,
Greensboro; sister Mrs. Raymond (Peggy Duncan) Williams, Lumberton; and two grandchildren.

COOLEEMEE Dewey Thomas Nicholson, 75,
Cooleemee, formerly of Hiddenite, died Monday (Nov. 22, 1999) at Davie County Hospital.
Born Nov. 13, 1924, in Iredell County, Mr.
Nicholson was a son of the late Willie and Edna Jarvis Nicholson. A retired textile
worker, he was of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include wife Eva Fisher Nicholson; son
Kenneth Nicholson, Statesville; brother Junior Vance Nicholson, Hiddenite; and sisters
Faye Kahl and Estelle Nicholson, Union Grove, and Maryee Bongino, Baltimore, Md.
Services: 11 a.m. Thursday, Grassy Knob Baptist
Church, conducted by the Rev. Joey Campbell and the Rev. Jeff Pennington. The body will be
placed in the church at 10:30. Burial, church cemetery.

Winnie Lee Raines
ROCKWELL Winnie Lee Raines, 82, Rockwell,
died Monday (Nov. 22, 1999) at Tara Plantation, Carthage.
Born Dec. 3, 1916, in Pageland, S.C., Mrs. Raines
was a daughter of the late William Thomas and Pearlie McLemore Groomes. A homemaker, she
was a member ofNew Haven Baptist Church, China Grove.
On Jan. 6, 1934, she married George Rand Raines,
who died Aug. 3, 1991. A son, Charles Raines, died in April 1993.
Survivors include sons Ronnie D. Raines,
Pinehurst, and Roger G. Raines, Cleveland; sisters Marie Bradshaw, Kannapolis, and
Elizabeth Martin, Mooresville; brother J.W. Jake Groomes, Madison; nine
grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

LINWOOD - Joyce Frances McBride Owens, 53, died
Monday (Nov. 22, 1999) at her home.
Born Dec. 14, 1945, in Rowan County, she was the
daughter of Mary Leazer McBride of Salisbury and the late Gilmer France McBride. A
homemaker, she was a graduate of North Rowan High School. She was a member of Yadkin
Baptist Church.
Survivors, in addition to her mother, include
husband Thomas Gene Owens, whom she married April 19, 1982; sons Ronald Scott Miller,
Lexington, and Terry Clay Owens Jr. of the home; daughter Crystal Davis, Cleveland;
stepson Terry Clay Owens Sr., Lexington; stepdaughter Ronda Michelle McNutt, McCata, Ala.;
sisters Ruth Simmons, Spencer, and Sylvia Barber, Lexington; one grandchild; and six
step-grandchildren.
