Robert White ConnorRobert
White Connor, 70, Salisbury, died Monday (Nov. 22, 1999) at Presbyterian Hospital,
Charlotte, after a brief illness.
Born Feb. 3, 1929, in Rowan
County, Mr. Connor was a son of the late Samuel Henry and Carrie Walter Connor. Educated
in Rowan County schools, he retired as a foreman from Southern Railway. A veteran, he
served in the U.S. Marine Corps during the Korean War. He was a member of Calvary Baptist
Church, where he was an active deacon and member of the Adult Mens Sunday School
Class.
Survivors include his wife, Nancy
Butner Connor, whom he married Nov. 27, 1955; son David Connor, Spencer; daughters Mrs.
Michael (Dale)Koontz and Mrs. Steve (Robin)Roach, both of Spencer; brother Walter Connor,
Salisbury; sisters Peggy Wilson and Vera Brown, both of Spencer, Jean Goodson, Salisbury,
and Judy Winder, Fayetteville; others reared in the home Dean Bartlett, Stowe, Ohio, and
David Bartlett and Dawn Bartlett, both of Salisbury; seven grandchildren; and two
great-grandchildren.
Services: 11 a.m. Wednesday,
Calvary Baptist Church, conducted by Dr. Rick Cockerham. The body will be placed in the
church at 10:30 and the deacons will be seated as a group. Burial, Rowan Memorial Park.
Visitation: 7-8:30 tonight, Lyerly

Iredell Ave., Spencer.

Lloyd Justin Gaskey
The funeral will be Wednesday for
Lloyd Justin Gaskey, 74, Peach Orchard Road, who died Sunday (Nov. 21, 1999) at Hefner
VAMedical Center after six months of serious illness.
Born Feb. 2, 1925, in Rowan
County, Mr. Gaskey was a son of the late John J. Gaskey and Ada Rufty Gaskey Leazer.
Educated in Rowan County schools, he served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He
retired in 1987 after 30 years with Cone Mills Salisbury plant. He was a member of
St. Pauls Lutheran Church.
His wife, Ruby Foster Gaskey, died
March 13, 1997, and a daughter, Lorene Gaskey, died in 1953.
Survivors include daughters Vickie
Bean, Salisbury, and Darlene Eller, China Grove; brothers Nevin and Guston Gaskey, both of
Salisbury; sisters Edna Watson and Faye Ousley, both of Salisbury; and four grandchildren.

Hellard, 76, Turrentine Church Road, died Monday (Nov. 22, 1999)at her home.
Born Oct. 9, 1923, in Iredell
County, Mrs. Hellard was a daughter of the late James and Lucretia Harris Peacock. Retired
from Sara Lee Corp., she had also worked at Baker Furniture. She attended Turrentine
Baptist Church.
Survivors include husband of 57
years Ruben Hellard; sons Johnny Hellard, Mocksville, and Joe Hellard, of the home;
daughters Margie Hellard and Mrs. Patrick (Kathy) Rogers, both of Mocksville; brother
Vance Peacock, Statesville; sister Eva Mae Nichols, Cooleemee; five grandchildren; eight
great-grandchildren; and two step-grandchildren.

Kenneth Byron Huffman
WILMINGTON Kenneth Byron
Huffman, Wilmington, died Saturday (Nov. 20, 1999) at M.D. Anderson Cancer Center,
Houston, Texas.
Born Oct. 18, 1952, in Rowan
County, Mr. Huffman was a son of the late William and Letha Huffman. A 1974 graduate of
the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, he has since worked for the North
Carolina Department of Correction as chief probation officer. He is a member of First
Baptist Church of Wilmington and numerous civic organizations. He has been involved with
coaching athletic teams for many years.
Survivors include wife Sharon
Jackson Huffman; children Ashley and Mason, of the home; brother Don Huffman, Raleigh; and
sisters Mrs. Dale (Judy)Lefler, Rockwell, and Mrs. Randy (Linda)Brown, Granite Quarry.

Baptist Medical Center, Winston-Salem.
Born Oct. 26, 1955, in Cumberland,
Mr. Kornegay was a son of AlyceRoberts and the stepson of John Roberts of Rose Hill. A
truck driver, he retired from Food Lion.

Scott Kornegay; daughter Andrea Jill Kornegay, Sampson County; son Justin Lanier, Sampson
County; and stepsons Mark Anthony Scott and Charles Wayne Dobson, both of Salisbury.

James Evans Lomax

will be Wednesday for James Evans Lomax, 83, formerly of 509 Patterson St., who died
Monday (Nov. 22, 1999) at Brian Center Health and Rehabilitation, Salisbury.
Born Aug. 14, 1916, in Rowan
County, Mr. Lomax was a son of the late James Harvey and Nellie Lefler Lomax. Educated in
the Rowan County schools, he retired in 1981 after 49 years at China Grove Cotton Mill. He
was a life member of First Baptist Church and a former member of Piedmont Variety Pigeon
Club, Charlotte, and Eastern Carolina Pigeon Club.

Born Jan. 9, 1912, in Anson
County, Mr. Maner was a son of the late George W. and Amanda Poplin Maner. A retired
textile worker, he was a member of Prospect Baptist Church and the Woodmen of the World.
His first wife, Louise Maner, died
Oct. 3, 1981, and his second wife, Beatrice S. Maner, died Sept. 27, 1995.

County, Mr. Smith was a son of the late Joseph Henry and Susan Eugenia Poteat Smith.
Educated at Farm Life School, he retired in 1980 as a construction foreman with Cannon
Mills. He was a member of Thyatira Presbyterian Church, where he was a deacon and elder, a
member of Caldwell Sunday School Class and elder emeritus.
Mr. Smith was a member of Eureka
Masonic Lodge 283, China Grove, and Millbridge Senior Citizens Group.
His wife, Cora Belle Ervin Smith,
died Aug. 23, 1999.

be Wednesday for Eddie Lee Lewis Woodward, 90, formerly of 1331 Washington Lane, who died
Monday (Nov. 22, 1999) at Avante of Concord Nursing Center after several years of
declining health and two weeks of serious illness.
Born Oct. 29, 1909, in Anson
County, Mrs. Woodward was a daughter of the late Robert and Ida Hannah Lewis. She was a
homemaker.
Her husband, Lonnie N. Woodward,
died in 1947. A son, Walter Glenn Woodward, also preceded her in death.
Survivors include daughters Mrs.
Larry (Frances)Duvall and Mrs. Beman (Mavis) Graham, both of Kannapolis, and Minnie Lee
Woodward, Cheraw, S.C.; sons Herman and James Woodward, both of Kannapolis; 12
