Sheriffs deputies are investigating three mailbox explosions two apparently
involving pipe bombs that occurred over the weekend.Paul Isenberg, of Panther Point Road in Richfield, reported
the first incident Saturday afternoon.
According to the report, sometime between Friday
at 4 p.m. and Saturday at 4 p.m., someone put an explosive device in the mailbox, causing
the inside to melt from the heat.
Lt. John Sifford said the device was some kind of
firework. The estimated damage here was about $60.
The second incident, reported Sunday morning by
George Bean, 1355 St. Lukes Church Road, blew the doors off the two-door mailbox,
throwing them close to 75 feet.
The report indicated pieces of copper tubing were
found in the $60 mailbox, which was destroyed.
Later that morning, Eddie Honeycutt, of 3430 Organ
Church Road, Rockwell, reported a similar incident.
Honeycutt heard the explosion that damaged his $40
mailbox around 4 a.m. Investigators found metal fragments and other explosive components
inside the mailbox.
No one was injured in any of the incidents.
