Pipe bombs destroy mailboxes

SALISBURY POST

R
owan County Sheriff’s deputies are investigating three mailbox explosions — two apparently involving pipe bombs — that occurred over the weekend.

Paul Isenberg, of Panther Point Road in Richfield, reported the first incident Saturday afternoon.

According to the report, sometime between Friday at 4 p.m. and Saturday at 4 p.m., someone put an explosive device in the mailbox, causing the inside to melt from the heat.

Lt. John Sifford said the device was some kind of firework. The estimated damage here was about $60.

The second incident, reported Sunday morning by George Bean, 1355 St. Luke’s Church Road, blew the doors off the two-door mailbox, throwing them close to 75 feet.

The report indicated pieces of copper tubing were found in the $60 mailbox, which was destroyed.

Later that morning, Eddie Honeycutt, of 3430 Organ Church Road, Rockwell, reported a similar incident.

Honeycutt heard the explosion that damaged his $40 mailbox around 4 a.m. Investigators found metal fragments and other explosive components inside the mailbox.

No one was injured in any of the incidents.

Anyone with tips can call the Rowan County Sheriff’s Department at 636-1011 or Crimestoppers at 638-5388.
