Clarence Basinger

ROCKWELL — Clarence “Speedy”Alexander Basinger, 59, of Rockwell, died Friday (Nov. 19, 1999) at Rowan Regional Medical Center.

Born Mar. 28, 1940, in Rowan County, Mr. Basinger was a son of the late Ether (Shuping) Basinger and James Ernest Basinger. A graduate of Granite Quarry High School’s class of 1959, he worked at Food Lion as a truck driver for 17 years. Mr. Basinger was a member of Rock Grove Methodist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Kaye B. Basinger, Rockwell; daughter Amy Basinger, Rockwell; son Marty Basinger, Rockwell; step-daughter Teresa Phipps, Rockwell; brother Ernest Ray Basinger, North Myrtle Beach, S.C.; two grandchildren; and three step-grandchildren.

Services:2 p.m. Sunday, Rock Grove United Methodist Church, conducted by the Rev. Jamie Hamrick, pastor. Burial, Brookhill Memorial Gardens.

Visitation:6-8 p.m. tonight, Powles Funeral Home. At other times, the family will be at the home of Mrs. Kaye Basinger.

 

Louise Beck

STATESVILLE — Martha Louise Osborne Beck, 77, 14785 Cool Springs Road, Cleveland, died Friday (Nov. 19, 1999) at Rowan Regional Medical Center after an illness of one month.

Born May 18, 1922, in Davie County, Mrs. Beck was a daughter of the late Nancy Etta Osborne. She attended Rowan County schools and retired from Monliegh Garment, where she was a seamstress. She was a member of Gay’s Chapel Baptist Church.

Survivors include her husband, Aubry Beck; son Roy Beck, Lenoir; granddaughters Judy Katz, Ashton, Md. and Lynne Anthony, Harmony; grandson James Beck, Cleveland; great-granddaughter Hannah Anthony, Harmony; and great-grandson Chad Anthony, Harmony.

Services: 2 p.m. Monday, South River United Methodist Church, conducted by the Revs. Brenda Newman and Jim Miles.

Visitation: 7-8:30 tonight, Nicholson Funeral Home. At other times the family will be at the residence.

Memorials: Cemetery Fund, South River United Methodist Church, care of Shelby Steele, 3875 South River Church Road, Cleveland, N.C. 27103.

 

Mildred Bridges

Mildred Lavada Mauney Bridges, 92, 1180 Flat Rock Road, China Grove, died Saturday (Nov. 20, 1999) at her home.

Born August 15, 1907 in Cleveland County, Mrs. Bridges was a daughter of the late Alice Mauney Roberts. She attended Western Union Academy in Rutherford County and was a retired employee for the U.S. Census Bureau.

Mrs. Bridges was a member of Historic Berean Baptist Church in Washington, D.C., where she was an active member of the various organizations of the church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, William N.Bridges.

Survivors include son Kenneth W. Norton, China Grove; brothers Howard Roberts Sr., Shelby, and Vaughn C. Roberts, Hampton, Va.; two grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Services: 11 a.m., Tuesday, Sandy Ridge AMEZion Church, Landis, conducted by the Rev. Bobby L. Smith. Burial, Lincoln Cemetery, Washington, D.C.

Visitation: 10 a.m. Tuesday, Sandy Ridge AMEZion Church, Landis.

 

Rowena Cristman

Rowena Gaddy Cristman, Salisbury, died Saturday (Nov. 20, 1999) at Autumn Care of Salisbury.

Summersett Funeral Home is in charge.

 

Chester Davenport Jr.

Chester Davenport Jr., 74, Rockwell, died Friday (Nov. 19, 1999) at Rowan Regional Medical Center after six months of declining health and two months of serious illness.

Born Jan. 23, 1925, in Pitt County, Mr. Davenport was the son of the late Lolie Whitfield Davenport and Chester Davenport Sr.

Mr. Davenport attended school in Bethel and retired in 1990 as a shop foreman for Martin Marietta. He attended First Baptist Church of Rockwell.

Two former wives, Dot and Helen Davenport, preceded him in death.

Survivors include his wife, Winfret Pauline Tutterrow Davenport; son Melvin Davenport, Newport News, Va.; stepson Clyde Edison Jr., Jacksonville, Fla.; daughters Shirley Luster, Coweta, Ok., and Gail Ritchie, Norfolk, Va.; stepdaughters Brenda Morrison, Salisbury, Carolyn Morrison, Rockwell, Theresa Cress, Granite Quarry, Terry Taylor, Faith, and Terina Barger, Salisbury; sister Odell Barnhill, Norfolk, Va.; 11 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Services: 2 p.m. Monday, Brookhill Memorial Gardens, conducted by the Rev. Benny Vickrey, pastor at First Baptist Church. Burial, Brookhill Memorial Gardens.

Visitation: 7-8:30 tonight, Lyerly Funeral Home. At other times, the family will be at the residence.

Edwin R. Fuller

Edwin R. Fuller died Saturday (Nov. 20, 1999) at Rowan Regional Medical Center.

William Alvin Hopkins

CHARLOTTE — William Alvin “Hop” Hopkins, 47, 9200 Glenwater Drive, died Saturday (Nov. 20, 1999) at Britthaven Nursing Home following several years of declining health.

Born March 31, 1952 in Rowan County, Mr. Hopkins was the son of the late Clara and James Hopkins Sr. He graduated from J.C. Price High School and was most recently employed at Hoechst Celanese Operations. He was a member of St. Luke Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Betty Robinson Hopkins, Columbia, S.C.; son Michael Antonio Hopkins, Salisbury; daughter Sonya Lakeeta Hopkins, Columbia; brother James Hopkins Jr., Charlotte; and step-mother Priscilla Hopkins, Salisbury.

Visitation: The family will be at 151 Hawkins Loop.

Noble and Kelsey Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

 

Jean Miller

KANNAPOLIS — Jean Albert Miller, 88, 2507 Florida Ave., died Saturday (Nov. 20, 1999) at his home following several years of declining health.

Born July 14, 1911 in Lynbrook, N.Y., Mr. Miller was a son of the late Albert Joseph and Marie Jeannae Miller.

After high school, he attended Bryant-Stratton Business Administration in Boston. In 1936, joined the Cannon Mills Company Band in Kannapolis. In 1943 he enlisted in the U.S. Army.

Mr. Miller was the commanding officer in the Army Music School at Ft. Lee, Va., during World War II and was later affiliated with the 108th Army Reserve band in Charlotte for many years.

In the late 1940s, Mr. Miller helped start the band program in Cabarrus County schools.

Mr. Miller was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Kannapolis, where he was the organist for more than 40 years. He also repaired band and church musical instruments.

Survivors include his wife, Elizabeth Burton Miller; son Joseph Thomas Miller, Charlotte; daughters Donna Marie Hinson, Gainesville, Fla. and Peggy Graham, Stanfield; three grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Services: 11 a.m. Monday, St. Joseph Catholic Church, conducted by the Rev. Karl Aschmann. Burial, Carolina Memorial Park.

Visitation: 7-8 tonight, Lady’s Funeral Home. At other times the family will be at the residence.

Doris Troutman

KANNAPOLIS — Doris Bowden Troutman, 79, 112 Springway Drive died Saturday (Nov. 20, 1999) at her home following two years of declining health and four weeks of serious illness.

Born Feb. 9, 1920 in Chesterfield County, S.C., Mrs. Troutman was a daughter of Dula Evans Bowden Jenkins of Pageland, S.C. and the late Willie Bowden.

She was a retired employee of Cannon Mills and member of First Assembly Worship Center of Concord.

Survivors include her mother; husband Buck Troutman; son Jerry Troutman, Concord; daughter Debbie Smith, Kannapolis; sisters Billie Gunter, Charlotte, and Joyce Perger, Virginia Beach, Va.; brother Frank Bowden, Kannapolis; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Services: 2 p.m. Monday, First Assembly Worship Center, Concord, conducted by the Rev. Tom Whidden. Burial, Carolina Memorial Park.

Visitation: 6-8 tonight, Lady’s Funeral Home. At other times the family will be at the residence.
