Clarence “Speedy” Alexander Basinger

ROCKWELL — Clarence “Speedy”Alexander Basinger, 59, of Rockwell, died Friday (Nov. 19, 1999) at Rowan Regional Medical Center.

Born Mar. 28, 1940, in Rowan County, Mr. Basinger was a son of the late Ether (Shuping) Basinger and James Ernest Basinger. A graduate of Granite Quarry High School’s class of 1959, he worked at Food Lion as a truck driver for 17 years. Mr. Basinger was a member of Rock Grove Methodist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Kaye B. Basinger, Rockwell; daughter Amy Basinger, Rockwell; step-daughter Teresa Phipps, Rockwell; brother Ernest Ray Basinger, North Myrtle Beach, S.C.; two grandchildren; and three step-grandchildren.

Services:2 p.m. Sunday, Rock Grove United Methodist Church, conducted by the Rev. Jamie Hamrick, pastor. Burial, Brookhill Memorial Gardens.

Visitation:6-8 p.m. tonight, Powles Funeral Home. At other times, the family will be at the home of Mrs. Kaye Basinger.

 

Mildred Money Bridges

CHINA GROVE — Mildred Money Bridges, 92, 1180 Flat Rock Road, died today (Nov. 20, 1999) at her residence.

Noble &Kelsey Funeral Home is in charge.

 

Clarence Junior Byerly

CHURCHLAND — Clarence Junior Byerly, 60, 202 Snider Road, died Thursday (Nov. 18, 1999) at Rowan Regional Medical Center, Salisbury.

Born Feb. 17, 1939, in Davidson County, Mr. Byerly was a son of Edith Hanes Byerly of Churchland and the late Clarence Jackson Byerly. He was a member of the Reeds American Legion and a former member of the Cattleman Association. Mr. Byerly was a retired fireman after 20 years with Churchland Fire Department. He had served with the U.S. Army.

Survivors, in addition to his mother, include wife Bonnie B. Byerly, of the home, and one granddaughter.

Services:3 p.m. Sunday, Smith Grove Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Greg Barefoot and the Rev. Mark Craddock. Burial, Churchland Baptist Church Cemetery. Military graveside rites performed by Randolph County Honor Guard.

Visitation:6:30-8:30 tonight, Piedmont Funeral Home, and other times at the residence.

Chester Davenport Jr.

Chester Davenport Jr., 74, of Rockwell, died Friday (Nov. 19, 1999) at Rowan Regional Medical Center, Salisbury.

Lyerly Funeral Home is in charge.

 

Dallie Jane Harwood

ALBEMARLE — Dallie Jane Hatley Harwood, 90, 20386 Old Concord Road, died Friday (Nov. 19, 1999)at Concord Nursing and Rehab Center.

Born Nov. 1, 1909, in Stanly County, Mrs. Harwood was the daughter of the late Melinda Huneycutt and Issac Hatley. She was a homemaker.

Her husband, Emsly Britton Harwood, preceded her in death in 1993.

Survivors include sons Hal and Jay Harwood, both of Albemarle, and Spence Harwood, Mt. Pleasant; daughters Betty Hurlocker, Mt. Pleasant, and Pat Thompson, Stanfield; sisters Ann Blackwelder, Albemarle, Hilda Crayton, Locust, Minnie Hatley and Dorie Tucker, both of Mt.Pleasant, and Emma Huneycutt, Concord; 11 grandchildren; and ten great grandchildren.

Services:2 p.m. Sunday, Running Creek Primitive Baptist Church, Stanfield, conducted by Elder Ted Morton. Burial, church cemetery.

Visitation: 7-9 tonight, Hartsell Funeral Home, Albemarle. At other times the family will be at the home of a daughter Mrs. Doug (Pat)Thompson, 24907 Ridgecrest Road, Stanfield.

 

Arthur Lewis Joyce

Arthur Lewis Joyce, 78, of Salisbury, died Thursday (Nov. 18, 1999) at his residence after a period of declining health.

Born Sept. 17, 1921, in Swift County, Minn., Mr. Joyce was a son of the late George and Anita Reimers Ellis. Educated in the Miland, Minn. schools, he was a retired U.S. Postal Service employee and was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving in the Pacific theatre during World War II. He was a member of Lebanon Lutheran Church, Cleveland.

Survivors include his wife, Josephine Marie Wintermote Joyce, whom he married April 13, 1946; daughters Darline Hoyt, Kalispell, Mont., Patricia Ditton, Salt Lake City, Utah, Deborah Medalen, Tacoma, Wash.; brothers Lamar Joyce, Anoka, Minn., Kenneth Joyce, Circle Pines, Minn., and Ronald Joyce, Big Lake, Minn.; sisters Luella Flitfelt, Minneapolis, Minn., Leatrice Melde, Glenwood, Minn., Edith Sadergaski, Appleton, Minn., and Bernice Lawson, Danvers, Minn.; nine grandchildren; and six great- grandchildren.

Services and visitation will be announced. The body will be cremated.

Bertie Louise Kelly

ALBEMARLE — Bertie Louise Robinson Kelly, 87, 2133 Woodcroft Lane, died Thursday (Nov. 18, 1999) at Stanly Memorial Hospital.

Born Jan. 2, 1912, in Ridgecrest, Buncombe County, Mrs. Kelly was a daughter of the late Esther Morrow and Issac Luther Robinson. She was a salesperson at Old Fort Drug Store.

Her husband, Locke William Kelly Sr., died in 1942.

Survivors include daughters Patricia Eudy, Albemarle, and Peggy Joyce Howell, Lithia, Fla.; sons Jerry Kelly, La Grange, Calif., Richard Kelly, Paradise Valley, Calif., Locke W. Kelly Jr., Hampton, Va.; sisters Geneva Hogan, Asheville, Marie Parker, Old Fort, Elizabeth Sneed, Boiling Springs; ten grandchildren; and 12 great grandchildren.

Services:4 p.m. Sunday, Hartsell Funeral Home-Lefler Memorial Chapel, conducted by the Rev. Ronald Honeycutt. Burial, Canton Baptist Church Cemetery, Albemarle.

Visitation: 6-8 tonight, Hartsell Funeral Home, Albemarle. At other times the family will be at the home of Patricia Eudy, 2133 Woodcroft Lane, Albemarle.

 

Roger Glenn Plaster

Roger Glenn Plaster, 92, of Jacksonville, Fla., died Tuesday (Nov. 16, 1999) in Jacksonville, Fla.

Born Nov. 27, 1906, in Rowan County, Mr. Plaster was a native of the Enochville community. He moved to Florida in 1946. He was a son of the late Virginia Bennett Plaster and James Newton Plaster. Educated in Rowan County, Mr. Plaster was a retired meteorologist with Jacksonville Weather Service. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church, Jacksonville.

He was preceded in death by a his wife, Arbie Propst Plaster, Jan. 19, 1994 and a son, Ronald Plaster, in 1991.

Survivors include daughter Gail Hilliker, Jacksonville, Fla.; four grandchildren; one great-grandchild.

Services:3 p.m. Sunday, Northcrest Chapel, Linn-Honeycutt, China Grove, conducted by the Rev. John Mark Beam, pastor of St. Enoch Lutheran Church. Burial, St. Enoch Lutheran Church.

Visitation:12:30-2:30 p.m. Sunday, Linn-Honeycutt Funeral Home, China Grove.

 

Louise DeBoe Steele

Louise DeBoe Steele, 85, 4265 Stokes Ferry Road, died Friday (Nov. 19, 1999) at her residence, after a period of declining health.

Born Nov. 27, 1913, in Pittsylvania County, Va., Mrs. Steele was a daughter of the late Nannie Owen DeBoe and Albert J. DeBoe. A graduate of Gretna High School in Gretna, Va., she also completed nursing school in Lynchburg, Va. She was a member of Central United Methodist Church, Spencer, where she was a life member of the Gertrude Bobbitt Guild.

Her husband, Ernest William Steele, preceded her in death, Aug. 30, 1979.

Survivors include son Mike Steele, Myrtle Beach, S.C.; daughter Betty Morgan, Salisbury; five granddaughters; two great grandchildren; and three step-grandchildren.

Services:11 a.m. Monday, Summersett Memorial Chapel, conducted by the Rev. Jim Pyatt, minister of Denver United Methodist Church. Burial, Rowan Memorial Park.

Visitation: 4-5:30 p.m. Sunday, Summersett Funeral Home.

James O. Thompson

ALBEMARLE — James O. Thompson, 66, 2002 Snuggs Park Road, died Thursday (Nov. 18, 1999) at Stanly Memorial Hospital, Albemarle.

Born Jan. 1, 1933, in Stanly County, Mr. Thompson was a son of the late James Arlie and Frances Sinclair Thompson. A retired employed of E.J. Snyder Inc., Mr. Thompson was a member of South Albemarle Baptist Church.

Survivors include wife Mickie Morton Thompson, of the home; and son Randy James Thompson, Albemarle.

Services:2 p.m. Sunday, Stanly Memorial Chapel, conducted by the Rev. Jon Hoey and the Rev. Furman Wilhoit. Burial, Fairview Memorial Park.
