Jennie Harwood Burge

ALBEMARLE — Jennie Lucille Harwood Burge, 78, 904 Honeysuckle Lane, died Wednesday (Nov. 17, 1999) at Stanly Memorial Hospital.

Born April 4, 1921, in Stanly County, Mrs. Burge was a daughter of the late P.A. and Gertrude Eudy Harwood. A U.S. Army veteran of World War II, she later worked at the Pentagon in Washington, D.C.

A retired medical secretary, she had worked for Dr. F. W. Green. She was a member of Tabernacle United Methodist Church.

Survivors include son Roy K. Burge and brother Joe B. Harwood, both of Albemarle.

Services: 11 a.m. Saturday, Hartsell Funeral Home’s Lefler Memorial Chapel, conducted by the Rev. Dan Lyons. Burial, Salem United Methodist Church cemetery.

Visitation: 6-8 tonight at the funeral home. At other times the family will be at the home on Honeysuckle Lane.

Luther Franklin Faggart

KANNAPOLIS — Luther Franklin Faggart, 88, 400 Airport Road, died Thursday (Nov. 18, 1999) at Rowan Regional Medical Center, Salisbury.

Born June 23, 1911, in Cabarrus County, Mr. Faggart was a son of the late Charles Caldwell and Anna Krimminger Faggart. He retired from Cannon Mills, where he had worked in the No. 6 and No. 1 weave rooms. He was a member of Mount Moriah Lutheran Church, China Grove.

A son, Max M. Faggart, preceded him in death.

Survivors include other son Richard F. Faggart, Salisbury; daughters Linda F. Bostian, Salisbury, and Peggy Troutman, China Grove; brothers Lonnie and Clyde Faggart, both of Rockwell; sisters Eula Goodnight, Kannapolis, and Mable Schenck, Rockwell; 11 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

Services: 11 a.m. Saturday, Mount Moriah Lutheran Church, China Grove, conducted by the Rev. Gene Peeler. Burial, West Lawn Memorial Park, China Grove.

Visitation: 7-9 tonight, Whitley’s Funeral Home.

Phyllis Lomax Fincher

KANNAPOLIS — The funeral will be Saturday for Phyllis Lomax Fincher, 63, 2136 S. Main St., who died Thursday (Nov. 18, 1999) at NorthEast Medical Center, Concord, after a brief illness.

Born Feb. 14, 1936, in Rowan County, Mrs. Fincher was a daughter of the late Robert L. and Pauline Cress Lomax. Previously employed at Barnhardt and Walker Advertising Agency, Concord, she was a member of Second Presbyterian Church. She was also past president of Kannapolis Credit Women’s Club and Junior Women’s Club and a charter member of PSA.

Survivors include her husband, Reid Fincher; son George L. Smith; and sisters Nancye Lomax Summers, Charlotte, and Linda Lomax McKnight, Kannapolis.

Services: 11 a.m. Saturday, Whitley’s Funeral Home Chapel, conducted by the Rev.Robert Hare. Burial, Carolina Memorial Park.

Lorene S. Foster

LANDIS — The funeral will be Saturday for Lorene S. Foster, 70, 319 N. Kimmons St., who died Wednesday (Nov. 17, 1999) at NorthEast Medical Center, Concord.

Born Nov. 30, 1928, in Rowan County, Mrs. Foster was a daughter of the late Willie A. and Pearl Elizabeth Weaver Sheets. She retired from Fieldcrest Cannon’s winder room and was a member of Friendship Freewill Baptist Church, Kannapolis.

Her husband, Charlie Foster, preceded her in death and a son, Donnie Ray Foster, died April 16, 1999.

Survivors include sisters Frances Barnhardt and Pauline Nichols, both of Kannapolis, and Katherine Smith, Concord; two grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Services: 2 p.m. Saturday, Friendship Freewill Baptist Church, Kannapolis, conducted by the Rev. Marler Starnes. Burial, Carolina Memorial Park, Kannapolis.

Clyde Edward Furr

Private services were held Tuesday for Clyde Edward Furr 69, of Rockwell, who died Sunday (Nov. 14, 1999) at the W.G. Hefner Salisbury VA Medical Center. Burial was in the Salisbury National Cemetery.

Born Feb. 28, 1930 in Cabarrus County, he was a son of the late Homer Clyde and Viola Smith Furr. A supervisor at Fieldcrest-Cannon, Plant 6, he was a member of the Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church of Concord, and was a U. S. Army veteran.

Survivors include his wife, Janice Corzine Furr, whom he married Sept. 23, 1951; sons Stephen Douglas Furr, Midland, Clyde Edward Furr Jr., Mt. Pleasant, and William Randolph “Randy” Furr, Rockwell; daughters Kathy Wilson, Concord, Deborah Sides, Loris, S.C., Annis Jeannette Phelps, Mebane, Janice Annette Copeland, Dahlgren, Va. and Jacque Lanette Barrow, Salisbury; brother Robert Furr, Mt. Pleasant; sisters Peggy Helms and Mildred Lowder, both of Concord; 13 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Arthur Lewis Joyce, 78, died Thursday (Nov. 18, 1999) at his home.

Roland Durwood Moose

KANNAPOLIS — The funeral will be Saturday for Roland Durwood Moose, 75, 516 Evelyn Ave., who died Wednesday (Nov. 17, 1999) at NorthEast Medical Center, Concord.

Born April 29, 1924, in Catawba County, Mr. Moose was a son of the late Colen and Sally Hedrick Moose. Retired from Bi-Lo Inc., he served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was a member of Jackson Park Baptist Church, where he was a former deacon and Sunday school teacher.

Survivors include his wife, Dorothy “Dot” Campbell Moose; son Roland Durwood Moose Jr., Oakboro; daughter Debbie Davis, China Grove; brothers Homard and Joe Moose, both of Maiden; sister Dot Fulwood, Myrtle Beach, S.C.; five grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Services: 3:30 p.m. Saturday, Jackson Park Baptist Church, conducted by the Revs. Sandy Yow and Ned Duncan. Burial, Carolina Memorial Park.

Irene Miller Parks

The funeral will be Saturday for Irene Miller Parks, 97, Salisbury, who died Thursday (Nov. 18, 1999) at Edwards Family Care after a period of declining health.

Born May 9, 1902, in Rowan County, Mrs. Parks was a daughter of the late Abram Phillip and Laura Jane Morgan Miller. A homemaker, she was educated in the Rowan County schools. She was a member of Bethel United Methodist Church but attended Trading Ford Baptist Church when her health permitted.

Her husband, Lattie Edward Parks, preceded her in death.

She is survived by nieces and nephews.

Services: 3 p.m. Saturday, Lyerly Funeral Home’s James C. Lyerly Chapel, conducted by the Rev. Tommy Conder, pastor, Bethel United Methodist Church, and the Rev. Mike Motley, pastor of Trading Ford Baptist Church. Burial, Rowan Memorial Park.

Visitation: 7-8:30 tonight at the funeral home. At other times the family will be at the home of a niece, Mary Long, Salisbury.

Mabel R. Phifer

KANNAPOLIS — Mabel Ragan Phifer, 75, 7601 Bringle Ferry Road, Salisbury, died Wednesday (Nov. 17, 1999) at her home after three weeks of illness.

Born May 1, 1924, in Spartanburg, S.C., she was a daughter of the late James Wesley and Faye Fowler Ragan. She was a homemaker.

Her husband, Carol Phifer, died in January 1965.

Survivors include daughters Linda R. Lowman, Salisbury, Janice Phifer Garriss, Portland, Va., and Judy Phifer Furr, Charlotte; brother J. W. Ragan , Kannapolis; 10 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.

Services: Graveside, 2 p.m. Saturday, Greenlawn Cemetery, China Grove, conducted by the Rev. Jerry W. Townsend.

Visitation: 7-8 tonight, Lady’s Funeral Home Chapel. At other times the family will be at the home on Bringle Ferry Road.

Evelyn Hawkins Sharples

The funeral will be Sunday for Evelyn Hawkins Sharples, 77, 615 Elm St., who died Thursday (Nov. 18, 1999) at Rowan Regional Medical Center after an illness of several days.

Born Dec. 8, 1922, in Iredell County, she was a daughter of the late James Hunter and Pauline Eckles Hawkins. A retired employee of New York City, she was a member of Lily’s Chapel Church of God, where she was assistant minister and a member of the missionary department and various other organizations.

Survivors include her husband, George W. Sharples Sr.; sons George W. Sharples Jr. and Brian Sharples, both of Brooklyn, N.Y., and Dallas and Wayne Sharples, both of Guyana; daughter Maxine Sadler, Brooklyn, N.Y.; brothers Charles and Wilbert Hawkins, both of Salisbury, and Lester Hawkins, Detroit, Mich.; sisters Geraldine Sloan, Salisbury, and Ruby Vaughters, Lexington; and a number of grandchildren.

Services: 2 p.m Sunday, Lily’s Chapel Church of God, conducted by Elder Thomas Clawson. Burial, Oakwood Cemetery.

Visitation: 1:30 p.m. Sunday at the church.

Harold L. Stirewalt

KANNAPOLIS — Harold Lynn Stirewalt, 39, of 6621 Charlie Walker Road, died Thursday at NorthEast Medical Center.

Born Sept. 13, 1960, in Cabarrus County, he was a son of Betty Jenkins Stirewalt of Kannapolis and the late Guy Henry Stirewalt Sr. He owned and operated Stirewalt Home Improvements and was a member of Independence Square Freewill Baptist Church and the Kannapolis Moose Lodge. A lifetime resident of the area, he attended Northwest Cabarrus High School and was an avid fan of Shane Brafford Racing Team.

Survivors, in addition to his mother, include his wife, Jill Rape Stirewalt; son Zachary L. Stirewalt of the home; daughters Kandas N. Stirewalt and Jessica M. Stirewalt, both of the home; stepdaughter Christy N. Rollings, Kannapolis; brothers Guy H. “Mike” Stirewalt, Kannapolis and David L. Stirewalt, Spartanburg, S. C.; sisters Wanda Starnes and Angela Measimer, both of Kannapolis.

Services: 3:30 p.m. Sunday, Whitley’s Funeral Home Chapel, conducted by the Rev. Ronnie Cooper. Burial, West Lawn Memorial Park, China Grove.
