James E. Abernathy

EAST SPENCER — The funeral will be Thursday for the Rev. James E. Abernathy, 82, 936 S. Long St., who died Saturday (Nov. 13, 1999) at his home after several years of declining health.

Born Dec. 23, 1916, in Hartford, Conn., Mr. Abernathy was the son of Ethel Abernathy Barnes. He was a graduate of Dunbar High School and Hood Theological Seminary. He had worked for Southern Railway for 30 years and for Fieldcrest Cannon for 15 years before retiring.

He had also retired as an ordained elder in the AME ZionChurch. He had served as pastor at Providence and Ardis Chapel, both in Rowan County; St. John, Thomasville; New Zion and Longleaf, both in Robbins; and churches in Rockingham, S.C.

He last served as pastor of Cedar Hill, Ansonville. He was an assistant pastor at Southern City Tabernacle AMEZion Church, where he was a lifelong member, president of the ABCClub, a Sunday school teacher, a Senior Usher Board member and a member of the Spiritual Chorus.

An alderman for the town of East Spencer for 20 years, he was a volunteer fireman for 50 years and a member of the Dunbar High School Reunion Committee He received the Martin Luther King Humanitarian Award in 1988.

Survivors include his wife of 59 years, Carrie Boler Abernathy; son James M. Abernathy, Salisbury; sisters Ruth A. Bush, Salisbury, and Otha A. Butler, Leesburg, Va.; and one grandchild.

Services: 1 p.m.Thursday, Southern City Tabernacle AME Zion Church, conducted by Dr. Donald C. Holness. Burial, Oakwood Cemetery, Salisbury.

Visitation: Noon Thursday at the church. At other times the family will be at the home on South Long Street.

Tammy Renee Atkinson

ALBEMARLE — TammyRenee Atkinson, 37, died Sunday (Nov. 14, 1999) at Stanly Manor.

Born March 12, 1962, in Stanly County, Miss Atkinson was a daughter of Marshall Edward and Maggie Ann Hathcock Atkinson, Albemarle. She had been a printing machine operator with B&D Print.

Survivors, in addition to her parents, include brother Eddie “Ed” James Atkinson, Albemarle; and sister Marcia Annette Tucker, Albemarle.

Services: None.

Edna Willis Carrier

KANNAPOLIS — The funeral will be Wednesday for Edna Willis Carrier, 83, 803 W. A St., who died Sunday (Nov. 14, 1999) at her home after a period of declining health.

Born March 15, 1916, in Wise County, Va., Mrs. Carrier was a daughter of the late George and Laura Fins Willis. Retired from the Daily Independent newspaper, she had earlier worked at CannonMills, Plant 1, sheet department.

She was a member of North Kannapolis Baptist Church, where she was active in the Sunday school.

Her husband,William H. “Bill” Carrier, died in 1982.

Survivors include son Bill Carrier,Kannapolis; daughter Charlotte Lovette, Raeford; sisters Alleen Pence, Kannapolis, Elizabeth Ann Bates, Kingsport, Tenn., and Irene Willis, Webber City, Va.; brothers the Rev. George Willis, Charles Ray Willis, Roy Lee Willis and John Willis, all of Webber City, Va., Howard Willis, New London, and Ralph Willis, Martinsville, Ind.; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Services: 11 a.m. Wednesday, Whitley’s Funeral Home Chapel, conducted by the Rev. Leon Hawks and the Rev. George Willis. Burial, Carolina Memorial Park.

Visitation: 7-9 tonight at the funeral home. At other times the family will be at the home of sister Alleen Pence, 4646 Rainbow Drive.

George Howard Clontz

MOORESVILLE — George Howard Clontz, 73, 1777 Perth Road, died Monday (Nov. 15, 1999) at Iredell Memorial Hospital, Statesville.

Born March 9, 1926, in Iredell County, Mr. Clontz was a son of Antha Wilkerson Clontz, Mooresville, and the late George Franklin Clontz. He had retired as a grade foreman after 26 years with Superior Paving. He was a member of Campbell Lodge 374, Troutman, and Rocky Mount United Methodist Church.

Survivors, in addition to his mother, include wife Doris Alley Clontz; sons Wayne Clontz, Mooresville, and Joe Clontz, Troutman; daughter Mrs. Henry (Mary Ann) Brantley, Mooresville; brother Steve Clontz, Mooresville; sister Doris Howard, Mooresville; eight grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Services: 2 p.m. Wednesday, Rocky Mount United Methodist Church, conducted by the Rev. Cecil Donahue and the Rev. Dale Holcombe. Burial,church cemetery. Masonic rites by Campbell Lodge 374 of Troutman.

Arline Harman Crawford

Arline Harman Crawford, 89, Atlanta, formerly of Dogwood Road, Salisbury, died Sunday (Nov. 14, 1999).

Born June 28, 1910, in Lynchburg, Va., Mrs. Crawford graduated in 1932 from Goucher College with a degree in chemistry.

She was an active member of St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, where she was president of the Episcopal Church Women for two years and active with the state organization. An active supporter of Thompson Children’s Home, Charlotte, she moved to Atlanta in 1994.

Her husband, W. Chapman Crawford, preceded her in death.

Survivors include son W. Chapman Crawford Jr., Atlanta; and two grandchildren.

Services: The body will be cremated. Private graveside service, 11 a.m. Dec. 4, Chestnut Hill Cemetery.

‘Jo’ Scarboro Crowe

KANNAPOLIS — Bertha Leigh “Jo” Scarboro Crowe, 84, formerly of Barr Road, died Monday (Nov. 15, 1999) at Big Elm Nursing Center after two years of declining health and two months of serious illness.

Born May 2, 1915, in Madison County, Ga., Mrs. Crowe was a daughter of the late Noah Webster and Lessie Jane Campbell Scarboro. Retired from Cannon Mills, Plant 1, sewing room, she was an active member of Kirkwood Presbyterian Church.

Her husband, Pat Graham Crowe, died in 1977.

Survivors include sons Don Edward Crowe,Concord, and Thomas Wayne Crowe, Lenoir; sisters Jane Cromer, Kannapolis, Gertrude Cromer, Concord, and Sally Nelms, Royston, Ga.; brother N.W. “Pete” Scarboro, Kannapolis; and three grandchildren.

Services: 11 a.m. Thursday, Kirkwood Presbyterian Church, conducted by the Rev. Robert Hare. Burial, Carolina Memorial Park.

EAST SPENCER — Willie Leroy Garrison, 63, 503 S. Long St., died Monday (Nov. 15, 1999) at Rowan Regional Medical Center, Salisbury.

Ruby Melton Hathcock

LEXINGTON — Ruby Lee Melton Hathcock, 86, 200 Brian Lane, formerly of Albemarle, died Sunday (Nov. 14, 1999) at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center, Winston-Salem.

Born July 11, 1913, in Chestersfield, S.C., Mrs. Hathcock was a daughter of the late Robert Ernest and Frances Annie Boone Melton. She had retired as a spinner at Wiscassett Mills, Albemarle.

Her husband, Richard Martin Hathcock, and a daughter, Margaret Lois Whitley, preceded her in death.

Survivors include daughter Gladys Ledford, Lexington; eight grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and 13 great-great-grandchildren.

Services: 11 a.m. Wednesday, Hartsell Funeral Home, Albemarle, conducted by the Rev. David Robinson and the Rev. Otis Goins. Burial, Norwood Cemetery, Norwood.

Gertrude Hinson

KANNAPOLIS — The funeral will be Wednesday for Gertrude McDonald Hinson, 83, 1004 Heather Drive, who died Sunday (Nov. 14, 1999) at NorthEast Medical Center, Concord, after two years of declining health and a day of serious illness.

Born April 28, 1916, in Scotland County, Mrs. Hinson was a daughter of the late Joseph Walker and Kaola Baker McDonald. She had retired in 1982 after 30 years as owner/operator of the Modern Record Shop,

Her husband, Foy Taylor Hinson, died in 1970.

Survivors include sisters Ann Lynn Abbott, Laguna Hills, Calif., and June Clelia Robinette, Houston, Texas; and brother Neal Alexander McDonald, Harrisburg.

William “Marshall” Isenhour, 34, 219 Pleasant Green Road, Hillsborough, formerly of Salisbury, died Sunday (Nov. 14, 1999) in Buford, Ga., of injuries sustained in an automobile accident.

Bobby Lee Kluttz

GRANITE QUARRY — The funeral will be Wednesday for Bobby Lee Kluttz, 58, Granite Quarry, who died Sunday (Nov. 14, 1999) at Rowan Regional Medical Center, Salisbury.

Born April 16, 1941, in Rowan County, Mr. Kluttz was a son of Velma Harwood Kluttz, Salisbury, and the late Harry Lee Kluttz. A graduate of Granite Quarry High School, he was semi-retired as a carpenter in mobile home construction. He attended Antioch Baptist Church, Richfield.

Survivors, in addition to his mother, include son Michael S. Kluttz, Salisbury; brothers H.L. Kluttz Jr., Granite Quarry, and Kenneth B. Kluttz, Salisbury; sister Sue Choat, Rockwell; and two grandchildren.

Services: 11 a.m. Wednesday, Powles Funeral Home, Rockwell, conducted by the Rev. Gene Sides, pastor, Antioch Baptist Church, Richfield. Burial, Brookhill Memorial Gardens, Rockwell.

Fay Mull Mason

KANNAPOLIS — The funeral will be Wednesday for Fay Mull Mason, 77, 815 E. Bryan St., Sapulpa, Okla., formerly of Wright Avenue, who died Friday (Nov. 12, 1999) at St. Francis Hospital, Oklahoma City, Okla.

Born April 13, 1922, in Eatonton,Ga., Mrs. Mason was a daughter of the late Horace M. and Lastie Farrell Mulls. She was a private duty nurse’s aide and a former employee of Cannon Mills Co. A member of Landis Baptist Church, she had moved to Oklahoma in 1995.

Her husband, Lonnie L. Mason, died Nov. 18, 1983.

Survivors include daughter Alice Fay McCreary, Allen, Texas; sister Houlcie Menius, China Grove; four grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

Services: 10 a.m. Wednesday, Lady’s Funeral Home Chapel, conducted by the Rev. BillyHoneycutt. Burial,Carolina Memorial Park.

Visitation: 6-8 tonight at the funeral home. At other times the family will be at the home of niece Rosa Wensil, 430 Menius Road, China Grove.

 

Jane Rozzano

BLOWING ROCK — Jane Bohrer Rozzano, 85, a former Salisbury resident, died Saturday (Oct. 30, 1999) at the home of daughter June Razzano, Summit, N.J.

She was a member of St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, Salisbury.

Her husband, the late Dr. Carman Razzano, was a former surgeon at the Salisbury VAMedical Center and maintained a practice at Blowing Rock Hospital and Medical Center for many years.

Survivors, in addition to her daughter, include a son, Dean Razzano.

A memorial service will be held in Summit, N.J., at a later date.

 

Barbara Jenney Stickels

Barbara Jenny Stickels, 83, Davidson, formerly of Salisbury, died Sunday (Nov. 14, 1999) at her home.

Born Feb. 12, 1916, in Gill, Mass., Mrs. Stickels was a daughter of the late Frank Irvin and Grace Adams Jenney. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, the American Contract Bridge League, Alpha Xi Delta Sorority and St. Luke’s Episcopal Church.

She attended Monmouth College, Monmouth, Ill., and graduated from High Point College. She taught fifth grade in Kingston, Mass., and Torrington, Conn., prior to her retirement.

Her husband, Dudley Jordan Stickels, preceded her in death.

Survivors include son Wade J. Stickels, Huntersville; daughter Pamela S. Kjellerstedt, Duxbury, Mass.; sister Nancy Jenney, New York City; and three grandchildren.

Services: Memorial, 2 p.m. Thursday, Lingle Chapel,Davidson College Presbyterian Church, Huntersville, conducted by the Rev. Gary Steber.

Visitation: On Thursday at the chapel, immediately following the service.

Myrtle Morgan Upright

KANNAPOLIS — The funeral will be Wednesday for Myrtle Mae Morgan Upright, 63, 503 N. Enochville Ave., who died Sunday (Nov. 14, 1999) at her home after three years of declining health and two months of serious illness.

Born Dec. 22, 1935, in Rowan County, Mrs. Upright was a daughter of the late Jake and Nellie Ludwick Morgan. She had retired due to disability from Cannon Mills, Plant 1, No. 2 spinning room. She attended Earle Street Church of God.

Survivors include husband Robert E. Upright; son Michael L. Upright, Enochville: daughters Barbara Jordan, China Grove, Loretta Galloway, Enochville, and Carol Proctor, Landis; brother William Junior Morgan, Salisbury; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Services: 1 p.m. Wednesday, Whitley’s Funeral Home Chapel, conducted by the Rev.David Shoemake. Burial, West Lawn Memorial Park, China Grove.
