James E. AbernathyEAST SPENCER
The funeral will be Thursday for the Rev. James E. Abernathy, 82, 936 S. Long St.,
who died Saturday (Nov. 13, 1999) at his home after several years of declining health.
Born Dec. 23, 1916, in Hartford, Conn., Mr.
Abernathy was the son of Ethel Abernathy Barnes. He was a graduate of Dunbar High School
and Hood Theological Seminary. He had worked for Southern Railway for 30 years and for
Fieldcrest Cannon for 15 years before retiring.
He had also retired as an ordained elder in the
AME ZionChurch. He had served as pastor at Providence and Ardis Chapel, both in Rowan
County; St. John, Thomasville; New Zion and Longleaf, both in Robbins; and churches in
Rockingham, S.C.
He last served as pastor of Cedar Hill,
Ansonville. He was an assistant pastor at Southern City Tabernacle AMEZion Church, where
he was a lifelong member, president of the ABCClub, a Sunday school teacher, a Senior
Usher Board member and a member of the Spiritual Chorus.
An alderman for the town of East Spencer for 20
years, he was a volunteer fireman for 50 years and a member of the Dunbar High School
Reunion Committee He received the Martin Luther King Humanitarian Award in 1988.
Survivors include his wife of 59 years, Carrie
Boler Abernathy; son James M. Abernathy, Salisbury; sisters Ruth A. Bush, Salisbury, and
Otha A. Butler, Leesburg, Va.; and one grandchild.

Edna Willis Carrier
KANNAPOLIS The funeral will be Wednesday
for Edna Willis Carrier, 83, 803 W. A St., who died Sunday (Nov. 14, 1999) at her home
after a period of declining health.
Born March 15, 1916, in Wise County, Va., Mrs.
Carrier was a daughter of the late George and Laura Fins Willis. Retired from the Daily
Independent newspaper, she had earlier worked at CannonMills, Plant 1, sheet department.
She was a member of North Kannapolis Baptist
Church, where she was active in the Sunday school.
Her husband,William H. Bill Carrier,
died in 1982.
Survivors include son Bill Carrier,Kannapolis;
daughter Charlotte Lovette, Raeford; sisters Alleen Pence, Kannapolis, Elizabeth Ann
Bates, Kingsport, Tenn., and Irene Willis, Webber City, Va.; brothers the Rev. George

Perth Road, died Monday (Nov. 15, 1999) at Iredell Memorial Hospital, Statesville.
Born March 9, 1926, in Iredell County, Mr. Clontz
was a son of Antha Wilkerson Clontz, Mooresville, and the late George Franklin Clontz. He
had retired as a grade foreman after 26 years with Superior Paving. He was a member of
Campbell Lodge 374, Troutman, and Rocky Mount United Methodist Church.
Survivors, in addition to his mother, include wife

Arline Harman Crawford
Arline Harman Crawford, 89, Atlanta, formerly of
Dogwood Road, Salisbury, died Sunday (Nov. 14, 1999).
Born June 28, 1910, in Lynchburg, Va., Mrs.
Crawford graduated in 1932 from Goucher College with a degree in chemistry.
She was an active member of St. Lukes
Episcopal Church, where she was president of the Episcopal Church Women for two years and
active with the state organization. An active supporter of Thompson Childrens Home,
Charlotte, she moved to Atlanta in 1994.
Her husband, W. Chapman Crawford, preceded her in
death.
Survivors include son W. Chapman Crawford Jr.,
Atlanta; and two grandchildren.
Services: The body will be cremated. Private
graveside service, 11 a.m. Dec. 4, Chestnut Hill Cemetery.

Scarboro Crowe, 84, formerly of Barr Road, died Monday (Nov. 15, 1999) at Big Elm Nursing
Center after two years of declining health and two months of serious illness.
Born May 2, 1915, in Madison County, Ga., Mrs.
Crowe was a daughter of the late Noah Webster and Lessie Jane Campbell Scarboro. Retired
from Cannon Mills, Plant 1, sewing room, she was an active member of Kirkwood Presbyterian
Church.
Her husband, Pat Graham Crowe, died in 1977.

Hinson was a daughter of the late Joseph Walker and Kaola Baker McDonald. She had retired

Born April 13, 1922, in Eatonton,Ga., Mrs. Mason
was a daughter of the late Horace M. and Lastie Farrell Mulls. She was a private duty
nurses aide and a former employee of Cannon Mills Co. A member of Landis Baptist
Church, she had moved to Oklahoma in 1995.
Her husband, Lonnie L. Mason, died Nov. 18, 1983.

BLOWING ROCK Jane Bohrer Rozzano, 85, a
former Salisbury resident, died Saturday (Oct. 30, 1999) at the home of daughter June
Razzano, Summit, N.J.
She was a member of St. Lukes Episcopal
Church, Salisbury.
Her husband, the late Dr. Carman Razzano, was a
former surgeon at the Salisbury VAMedical Center and maintained a practice at Blowing Rock
Hospital and Medical Center for many years.
Survivors, in addition to her daughter, include a
son, Dean Razzano.
A memorial service will be held in Summit, N.J.,
at a later date.
Barbara Jenney Stickels
Barbara Jenny Stickels, 83, Davidson, formerly of
Salisbury, died Sunday (Nov. 14, 1999) at her home.
Born Feb. 12, 1916, in Gill, Mass., Mrs. Stickels
was a daughter of the late Frank Irvin and Grace Adams Jenney. She was a member of the
Order of the Eastern Star, the American Contract Bridge League, Alpha Xi Delta Sorority
and St. Lukes Episcopal Church.
She attended Monmouth College, Monmouth, Ill., and
graduated from High Point College. She taught fifth grade in Kingston, Mass., and
Torrington, Conn., prior to her retirement.
Her husband, Dudley Jordan Stickels, preceded her
in death.
Survivors include son Wade J. Stickels,
Huntersville; daughter Pamela S. Kjellerstedt, Duxbury, Mass.; sister Nancy Jenney, New
York City; and three grandchildren.
