Alexander "Alex" Smith


The funeral will be Tuesday for Alexander Brandon "Alex" Smith, 26, 2280 Seventh St. Extension, who died Saturday (Oct. 30, 1999) from injuries sustained in a motorcycle accident.

Born July 17, 1973, in San Diego, Calif., Mr. Smith was a son of Yolanda Orellana Garcia, Charlotte, and George Henry Smith of Salisbury. A graduate of North Rowan High School, he was employed as an electrician at the Freightliner Corp., Cleveland. He was a member of Spencer Moose Lodge 2019.

Survivors, in addition to his parents, include wife Heather Kluttz Smith, whom he married Feb. 14, 1994; daughters Kaitlyn Nicole and Ashlynn Bree Smith, both of the home; stepmother Marci H. Smith of Salisbury; brothers Eric Smith, Maine, and Patrick Smith and   George Smith Jr., both of Salisbury; and sisters Yolanda S. Knox, Salisbury, Lillian S. Spears,
Chicago, and Cynthia Johnson, New Mexico.

Services: 11 a.m. Tuesday, Summersett Funeral Home Chapel, conducted by Dr.
Rick Cockerham, pastor, Calvary Baptist Church.

Visitation: 7-8:30 tonight at the funeral home.

‘Jeanette’ McCoy Barbee

CHARLOTTE — Rachel “Jeannette” McCoy Barbee, 59, Charlotte, died Thursday (Nov. 11, 1999) at her home.

Born Aug. 25, 1940, in Mecklenburg County, Mrs. Barbee was a daughter of the late Rachel Whitley and Sambo McCoy. She retired as cafeteria manager from The Four C’s Food Service after 25 years.

Her husband, Ralph Martin Barbee, and a son, Ralph Martin Barbee Jr., preceded her in death.

Survivors include other sons Sammy Coleman, Salisbury, and Bruce and Robert Barbee, both of Charlotte; daughters Melanie Barbee, Charlotte, and Tamara Hedrick, Belmont; and six grandchildren.

Services: 1 p.m. Monday, Cavin-Cook Funeral Home Chapel, Huntersville, conducted by the Rev. Bill Prather. Burial, Mecklenburg Memorial Park, Huntersville.

Visitation: 7-9 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

Joyce Gentry Bohner

KANNAPOLIS — Joyce Elaine Gentry Bohner, 64, 222 Cliffside Drive, died Thursday (Nov. 11, 1999) at NorthEast Medical Center, Concord.

Born April 26, 1935, in Akron,Ohio, Mrs. Bohner was a son of the late Barry and Carmen Wix Gentry. She was a member of Rodgers Park Baptist Church and WMU.

A son, Donald Bohner Jr., preceded her in death.

Survivors include husband Donald Bohner; daughtersBrenda Williamson, China Grove, Carmen Bost, Kannapolis, Donna Cauble, Concord, and Pat Rary, Salisbury; sisters Carol Sue Zirkle, Broken Arrow, Okla., and Katherine Wells, Bradenton, Fla.; four grandchildren; and three step-grandchildren.

Services: 2 p.m. Sunday, Rodgers Park Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Tony Fox. Burial, West Lawn Memorial Park, China Grove.

Visitation: 7-9 p.m. Saturday, Whitley’s Funeral Home.

Margaret Ward Butler

CONCORD — Margaret Ward Butler, 80, 4756 Sapp Road, died Thursday (Nov. 11, 1999) at her home.

Born Dec. 23, 1918, in Mocksville, Mrs. Butler was a daughter of the late Bruce and Margaret “Maggie” Stonestreet Ward. A member of Kannapolis Church of Christ, she retired several years ago from Heilig Myers Furniture, Kannapolis.

Survivors include husband H.R. Butler; daughter Margo Kennerly, Kannapolis; sister Theolene Barnes, Dallas,Texas; four grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Services: 2 p.m. Sunday, Lady’s Funeral Home Chapel, Kannapolis, conducted by Kirk Sams. Burial,Jericho Church of Christ Cemetery, Mocksville.

Visitation: 7-9 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home. At other times the family will be at the home on Sapp Road.

Joe Eddie Davis

EAST SPENCER — Joe Eddie Davis, 57, 607 Pinetree Drive, died Friday (Nov. 12, 1999) at Rowan Regional Medical Center, Salisbury.

Noble and Kelsey Funeral Home, Salisbury, is in charge.

 

Vallie B. Dunn

KANNAPOLIS — Vallie B. Dunn, 88, Five Oaks Nursing Center, formerly of 602 Cadillac St., died Thursday (Nov. 11, 1999) at NorthEast Medical Center, Concord.

Whitley’s Funeral Home is in charge.

 

Virginia Bowen Gantt

ALBEMARLE — The funeral will be Saturday for Virginia Bowen Gantt, 82, 459 N.Tenth St., who died Wednesday (Nov. 10, 1999) at her home.

Born May 4, 1917, in New Bedford, Mass., Mrs. Gantt was a daughter of the late Earle Preston and Mary Elizabeth Wood Bowen. A veteran of the U.S. Army, she reached the rank of first lieutenant. She served in Hawaii during during World War II.

A registered nurse, she worked at the old Stanly General Hospital, StanlyCounty Hospital and Stanly Memorial Hospital. She was a volunteer with Christian Ministries, Stanly County Nutrition Center and the Red Cross. An avid bridge player, she was a member of a number of bridge clubs.

While serving in World War II, she met her husband, Harry Max Gantt, who died in 1991.

Survivors include son Harry Max Gantt Jr., Albemarle; daughters Martha Gantt Bond, Durham, Charlotte Gantt Peddicord, Chevy Chase, Md., and Deborah Gantt Collicutt, Chapel Hill; seven grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Services: 11 a.m. Saturday, Main Street United Methodist Church, conducted by the Rev. David M. Rorie. Burial, Fairview Memorial Park, Albemarle.

Visitation: 7-9 tonight, Hartsell Funeral Home. At other times the family will be at the home on NorthTenth Street.

Johnny Sam Hill

EAST SPENCER — Johnny Sam Hill, 53, 914 N. Long St., died Wednesday (Nov. 10, 1999) at his home.

Born April 28, 1946, in Rowan County, Mr. Hill was a son of the late Matthew J. and Mamie Saunders Hill. He was a graduate of Dunbar High School and a member of Mount Olive Full Gospel Church, Salisbury. He was employed by Universal Forest Products and the owner of Hill’s Upholstery.

Survivors include wife Patricia Sloan Hill; son Jonathan Hill, of the home; daughter Tiffany Boseman, of the home; stepdaughters Tonya and Stacy Hartman, both of Asheville; brothers Gene Hill, Salisbury, Luther Hill,Roosevelt, Long Island, N.Y., and Rufus Saunders, Estill, S.C.; and sisters Frances Sorocki, Salisbury, and Patricia Hill, Spencer.

Services: 2 p.m. Sunday, A.R. Kelsey Memorial Chapel, Noble and Kelsey Funeral Home, Salisbury, conducted by the Rev. Frank Smith. Burial, Rowan Memorial Park, Salisbury.

Visitation: 1 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

 

Eva Mary St. Jean LeClair

ROCKWELL — The funeral will be Saturday for Eva Mary St. Jean LeClair, 86, Meadows Retirement Center, who died Thursday (Nov. 11, 1999) at Rowan Regional Medical Center, Salisbury.

Born March 6, 1913, in Slaterville, R.I., Mrs. LeClair was a daughter of the late Oriel and Evalina Normundie St.Jean. Educated in the Massachusetts schools, she formerly worked on the assembly line of a jewelry manufacturer. She was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Salisbury.

Her husband, William Henry LeClair, preceded her in death.

Survivors include sons Donald L. LeClair, Rockwell, and William H. LeClair Jr., North Springfield, Vt.; daughter Marie LeClair Clanton, Salisbury; brother Clifford St. Jean, South Attleboro, Mass.; sister Viola Charon, Newark, Ohio; 13 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.

Services: Prayer service 6 p.m. Saturday, Powles Funeral Home Chapel, conducted by DeaconPatrick Vallandingham, Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Burial will be held at St. Stephens Catholic Church cemetery, Attleboro, Mass., at a later date.

Visitation: Saturday at the funeral home after the prayer service until 8 p.m. At other times the family will be at the home of daughter Marie LeClair Clanton, Salisbury.

Rosa Sellers Sutton

KANNAPOLIS — Rosa Sellers Sutton, 87, 400 E. 27th St., died Thursday (Nov. 11, 1999) at her home.

Lady’s Funeral Home is in charge.

 

Michael Dale Triplett

WEST PALM BEACH,Fla. — Michael Dale Triplett, 48, West Palm Beach, died Saturday (Nov. 6, 1999) atColumbia Medical Center after an extended illness.

Born Jan. 10, 1951, in Concord, N.C., Mr. Triplett was a son of William J. “Pete” and Ellen “Peggy”Triplett of Kannapolis, N.C. He worked for Palm Beach County as a heavy equipment operator for the past 14 years.

Survivors, in addition to his parents, include wife Vivian Triplett; son William Michael Triplett, Kannapolis, N.C.; and sister Della V. Landry, Lake Worth, Fla.

Services: 2 p.m. Saturday, Whitley’s Funeral Home, Kannapolis, N.C. Burial, Sunset Cemetery, Kannapolis, N.C.

Visitation: 7-9 tonight at the funeral home. At other times the family will be at the home of his parents, 806 Victoria Ave., Kannapolis, N.C.

J. Ashburn Williams

LEXINGTON — Jesse Ashburn Williams, 86, 3912 Giles Road, died Wednesday (Nov. 10, 1999) at Lexington Memorial Hospital.

Mr. Williams was born Nov. 26, 1912, to the late Henry Alexander and Mary Jane Owen Williams. He graduated high school in Tyro and was class valedictorian. In 1975, he retired as superintendent fromTriangle Construction. He was a member of Pine Primitive Baptist Church, where he was a trustee, deacon, treasurer, clerk and member of the cemetery committee.

Survivors include wife Evelyn Young Williams; daughters Mrs. Ronald (Betty Zane)Gobble and Mrs. Kent (Mary Ruth)Parks, both of Lexington; son Charles A. Williams, Clemmons; stepdaughter Mrs.Wayne (Diane)Sink, Lexington; stepsons Don Williams, Mooresville, and Phil Williams, Matthews; sister Beatrice Owens, Lexington; brother William Donald Williams, Lexington; five grandchildren; and five step-grandchildren.

Services: 2 p.m. Saturday, Pine Primitive Baptist Church, conducted by Elders John Draper, Kemp Walker and Eugene Bennett. The body will be placed in the church at 1:30. Burial, church cemetery.

Visitation: 6:30-8:30 tonight, Piedmont Funeral Home. At other times the family will be at the home on Giles Road.

Fannie Pegram Young

GRANITE QUARRY — Fannie Pegram Young, 90, 815 Dunns Mountain Road, died Wednesday (Nov. 10, 1999) at her home after several years of declining health.

Born Aug. 12, 1909, in Dinwiddie County, Va., Mrs. Young was a daughter of the late Cupid and Eva Riddley Pegram. Educated in the Dinwiddie County, Va., schools, she was a domestic worker.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, Major Washington Massenburg, and her second husband, Charlie Young.

Survivors include sons Major I. Massenburg, Long Island, N.Y., and Glover H. Massenburg, Petersburg, Va.; daughters Esther L. Morgan, Granite Quarry, and Mary V. Daniel, Richmond, Va.; sister Pauline Robertson, Richmond, Va.; seven grandchildren; and several great-grandchldren and great-great-grandchildren.

Mitchell &Fair Funeral Service, Salisbury, is in charge.
