Sharon Taylor

CONCORD — Sharon Newton Hicks Taylor, 51, 2046 Barr Road, died Monday (Nov. 8, 1999) at NorthEast Medical Center after a year of declining health and two weeks of serious illness.

Born Aug. 6, 1948, in Cabarrus County, Mrs. Taylor was a daughter of the late D.W. and Odessa Fullem Newton. She had retired due to ill health after 15 years with Newton Properties. She was a member of Roberta Church of God, where she was a soloist.

Survivors include husband Lester B.Taylor; daughters Crystal Hicks, of the home, and Melissa Blevins,China Grove; brother Don Newton, Concord; sister Sandra Brown, Concord; and one granddaughter.

Services: 3:30 p.m. Wednesday, Whitley’s Funeral Home Chapel, Kannapolis, conducted by the Rev. Jack Smith. Burial, Oakwood Cemetery,Concord.

Visitation: 7-9 tonight at the funeral home. At other times the family will be at the home of son Don Newton, 512 Kansas St., Kannapolis.

Samuel Lee Davis

Samuel Lee Davis, 68, Salisbury, died Monday (Nov. 8, 1999) at Rowan Regional Medical Center.

Lyerly Funeral Home is in charge.

 

Felix M. Drye

BADIN — Felix M. Drye, 82, 60 Cedar St., died Sunday (Nov. 7, 1999) at his home.

Born June 14, 1917, in Rowan County, Mr. Drye was a son of the late Arthur David and Maude Ella Earnhardt Drye.

He had retired from Alcoa, where he had been a member of the 25 Year Club. He was also a member of Badin United Methodist Church.

Survivors include wife Crealmer Arey Drye; son Felix “Phil” Drye Jr.,Sanford; daughters Mrs. Terry (Barbara) Moore, Badin, and Mrs. Rick (Miriam)Huneycutt, Harrisburg; brother Arthur D. Drye, Albemarle; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Services: 2 p.m. Wednesday, Hartsell Funeral Home Memorial Chapel, Albemarle, conducted by the Rev. Judith Bolen Drye and the Rev. Wes Judy. Entombment, Fairview Memorial Park, Albemarle.

Visitation: 7-9 tonight at the funeral home. At other times the family will be at the home on Cedar Street.

Sandra Hudson Prather

The funeral will be today for Sandra Hudson Prather, 33, Salisbury, formerly of Andrews, who died Friday (Nov. 5, 1999) at her home.

Born Nov. 20, 1965, in Slidell,Va., Ms. Prather was a daughter of Jerry and Sally Hudson of Andrews.

She was a 1983 graduate of Andrews High School and attended Western Carolina University. A Catholic, she was a customer service representative with Manpower Temporary Agency.

Survivors, in addition to her parents, include companion Chuck LaCourse, Salisbury; son Chad Anthony Prather, Salisbury; brother Dan Hudson, Robbinsville; sisters Julie Norcross, Stecoh, and Linda Simpson, Andrews; and maternal grandmother Erma Bohrer, Laramie, Wyo.

Services: Funeral mass, 3 p.m. today, Holy Redeemer Catholic Church, Andrews, conducted by the Rev. Bob Bond. Burial, Valleytown Cemetery, Andrews.

Ivie Funeral Home, Andrews, is in charge. Summersett Funeral Home is handling local arrangements.

Virginia Tucker Russell

NEW LONDON — Virginia Tucker Russell, 84, a resident of New London for 40 years, died Sunday (Nov. 7, 1999) at Wesley Nursing Center, Charlotte.

Born Dec. 27, 1914, in Gainesville, Ga., Mrs. Russell was a daughter of the late Harry Richardson and Frances Aurelia Tucker. A graduate of Brenau College, she taught in the Georgia schools for seven years.

A homemaker, she did volunteeer work with both Cub Scouts and Girl Scouts. She was a member of New London United Methodist Church, where she was a Sunday school teacher and president of the United Methodist Women.

Survivors include her husband of more than 50 years, the Rev. Dr. Bernard C. Russell; daughters Rosa Linda Russell Talbert, Shelby, and Adele Russell Fitzgerald, Kannapolis; sons EdwinLewis Russell, Shelby, Ala., and Dr. Samuel Stephen Russell, Huntsville, Ala.; sister Sue Blackstock, Thomaston, Ga.; and four grandchildren.

Services: 3 p.m. Wednesday, New London United Methodist Church, conducted by the Rev. Pat Jenkins and the Rev. Gervase Hitch.

Visitation: The family will receive friends in the church fellowship hall after the service.

Robert Lee Saunders

Robert Lee Saunders, 46, 5 Pine Tree Road, died Monday (Nov. 8, 1999)at his home.

Born May 20, 1953, in Salisbury, Mr. Saunders was the son of Spencer W. and Annie Maie Chandler Saunders of Salisbury. He was a 1971 graduate of Boyden High School and a 1975 graduate of Wake Forest University, where he was a member of Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity.

Mr. Saunders graduated cum laude in 1978 from Wake Forest School of Law, where he was a member of the Law Review staff. He has practiced law in Salisbury since 1978.

A member of St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, he was a Sunday school teacher, a lay Eucharist minister and a delegate to the Episcopal diocesan convention.

Mr. Saunders was chairman of the Republican Party and a member of the founding board of Hospice of Rowan County and the board of directors of Waterworks Visual Art Center. A community adviser to Total Care Health Services, he served on the board of Carolina Legal Services and was a founding member and past chairman of the Rowan Lutheran Education Association of Salisbury Academy. He was also a member of the Rowan County Planning Board, the Salisbury Parks and Recreation board and the Greenway Committee.

He was a member of the N.C. Bar Association, the American Bar Association, the American Trial Lawyers Association, the N.C. Academy of Trial Lawyers, the N.C. Savings and Loan League, the N.C. Association of Long Term Care Facilities and the Fidelity Bank board (formerly First Citizens Bank and Trust). He also served on the state bar’s Positive Action for Lawyers committee and the steering committee for the Lawyers Assistance Program.

Survivors, in addition to his parents, include wife Kimberly Weller Detty Saunders; sons Samuel Aaron and Stephen Holman Saunders, both of the home; daughter Charlotte Chandler Saunders, of the home; and brother Spencer William Saunders Jr., Richmond, Va.

Services: 2 p.m. Wednesday, St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, conducted by the Rev. John Southern, interim pastor, and the Rev. C. Roger Butler, Episcopal chaplain. Burial, City Memorial Park.

Visitation: 6-8 tonight, Summersett Funeral Home.

Charles Boyd Seaford

KANNAPOLIS — The funeral will be Wednesday for Charles Boyd Seaford, 87, 1327 Arlington Ave., who died Monday (Nov. 8, 1999) at Transitional Health Services after several years of declining health.

Born May 29, 1912, in Cabarrus County, Mr. Seaford was a son of the late Edward Gibson and Mary Honeycutt Seaford. He had retired in 1977 after 39 years of owning and operating Towel City Blind Co. He had earlier worked at Cannon Mills, Plant 1, No. 7 slasher room.

A charter member of Calvary Presbyterian Church, in earlier years he was a member of Gilwood Presbyterian Church, Concord, where he served as elder and deacon.

Survivors include wifeMarie Honeycutt Seaford; sons Charles G. and William A. “Bill” Seaford, both of Kannapolis; brothers Fred Seaford, Lincolnton, and Lane Seaford, Charlotte; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Services: 2 p.m. Wednesday, Whitley’s Funeral Home Chapel, conducted by the Rev. Gene Frady. Burial, Carolina Memorial Park.

Visitation: 7-9 tonight at the funeral home. At other times the family will be at the home on Arlington Avenue.

Fred Cecil Wall

MOCKSVILLE — Fred Cecil Wall of Mocksville died Monday (Nov. 8, 1999) at Autumn Care of Mocksville.

Eaton Funeral Service is in charge.

 

Emma Jane Watson

Emma Jane Watson, infant daughter of Marlene Barrett and Edward Watson, 128 S. Milford Drive, died at birth Saturday (Nov. 6, 1999) at Rowan Regional Medical Center.

Survivors, in addition to her parents, include brother William Watson, of the home; sister Elizabeth Watson, of the home; and maternal and paternal grandparents.

The body will be cremated. No services will be held.

Summersett Funeral Home is in charge.

 

Gene F. Gobble Jr.

HIGH POINT — Gene Franklin Gobble Jr., 38, Madison Avenue, died Sunday (Nov. 7, 1999) at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center, Winston-Salem, of injuries sustained in an industrial accident in Stuart, Va.

Born Feb. 7, 1961, in Davidson County, Mr. Gobble was a son of Gene Franklin and Reba Thomason Gobble of Lexington. He was a foreman with Guy M. Turner of Greensboro.

In addition to his parents, he is survived by sons Matthew Gobble, Farmington, and Chad Gobble, Clemmons; brother Tim Gobble, Walkertown; sisters Tonya Perrell, Lexington, and Michelle Jones, Davidson; maternal grandparents Hollis and Ethel Thomason, Lexington; and paternal grandfather Baxter Gobble, Salisbury.

Services: 2 p.m. Wednesday, Reedy Creek Baptist Church, Lexington, conducted by the Rev. Egbert Craven. Burial, church cemetery.

Visitation: 6:30-8:30 tonight, Davidson Funeral Home, Lexington. The rest of the time, the family will be at the home of his parents on Gobble Road in Lexington.

 

Lewis Mills Keeton

ADVANCE — Lewis Mills Keeton, 86, Dellwood Lane, died Sunday (Nov. 7, 1999) at Forsyth Memorial Hospital, Winston-Salem.

Born June 28, 1913, in Guilford County, Mr. Keeton was a son of the late Emma Evans and Martin Luther Keeton.

He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. A member of Davie Baptist Church, he had retired from JeffCo.

His wife, Mary Elsie Osborne Keeton, died in 1992.

Survivors include sons Lynn and Glen Keeton, both of Mocksville, Cleo, Martin E. and John Keeton, all of Advance, and Louis W. Keeton, Greensboro; daughters Ruby Jean Boger, Waverly, Va., and JoAnn Crotts, Mocksville; brother Troy Keeton, Supply; sisters Mary Keeton, Lewisville, and Rosa Bell Byerly, Winston-Salem; 24 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren.

Services: 2 p.m. Wednesday, Davie Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Aaron Carter. Burial, church cemetery.

Visitation: 7-9 tonight, Eaton Funeral Home, Mocksville.

 

Maude Mae Marlowe

CLEVELAND — Maude Mae Marlowe, 94, 4530 Amity Hill Road, died Monday (Nov. 8, 1999) at Brian Center of Statesville.

Born Jan. 16, 1905, in Iredell County, she was a daughter of the late Lodema Souther and Joseph Edward Marlowe. She was a retired textile worker and a member of Knox Chapel United Methodist Church.

Survivors include daughter Ruby M. Beaver, of the home, four grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and six great-great-grandchildren.

Services: 3 p.m. Wednesday, Westmoreland Chapel of Bunch-Johnson Funeral Home, Statesville, conducted by the Rev. Paul Burke. Burial, Oakwood Cemetery.

Visitation: 2-3 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home in Statesville.
