KANNAPOLIS - Margaret B. Allen, 85, 1102 Mable
Ave., died Saturday (Nov. 6, 1999) at NorthEast Medical Center, Concord, after two months
of declining health.
Born Sept. 8, 1914, in York, S.C., Mrs. Allen was
the daughter of the late Docia Olivia Davidson and James Noah Benfield. She had retired
from the sheet department of Cannon Mills, Plant 1.
Her husband, Bruce Watson Allen, died in December
1967.
Survivors include sons Floyd W. Allen, Pacolet,
S.C., Jerry W. Allen, Colorado Springs, Colo., and Phillip S., Michael T. and Herman G.
Allen, all of Kannapolis; daughters Glenola A. Peoples, Fayetteville, Patricia Johnson,
Geismar, La., Norma Gail Duganne, Salisbury, and Janice A. LaMarche, Vincennes, Ind.;
sisters Louise B. Stewart, Clover, S.C., and Irene B. Starnes and Margaret M. Shepherd,
both of Kannapolis; 31 grandchildren; 54 great-grandchildren; and one
great-great-grandchild.

Born Feb. 19, 1922, in Silver City, Utah, Mrs.
Bernard worked as a bookkeeper for the state of California. A Mormon, she was a former
national officer of Clipped Wing of United Airline Stewardesses.
Survivors include daughter Judy Evelyn Cornatzar,
Norwood; five grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Darrell N. Smith
MOCKSVILLE Darrell N. Smith, 69, Sheffield
Road, died Saturday (Nov. 6, 1999) at Davis Medical Center, Statesville.
Born March 25, 1930, in IredellCounty, Mr. Smith
was a son of the late James N. and Ada L. Tomlin Smith. He had retired in 1991 from the
Hall of Justice in Winston-Salem.
A veteran of the U.S. Army, he served during World
War II. He was a member of Edgewood Baptist Church, Cooleemee, and the Born Again Singers.
Survivors include wife Linda A. Smith; sons Jimmy
Smith, Statesville, and Michael Smith, Taylorsville; daughter KimDavis, Winston-Salem;
stepson Jason Rock, Winston-Salem; stepdaughter Ruth Shores, Winston-Salem; and seven
grandchildren.
Services: 2 p.m. today, Edgewood Baptist Church,
Cooleemee, conducted by the Rev. Danny Shores. The body will be placed in the church at
1:30. Burial, New Union United Church Cemetery.

Eva Hauser Gantt
Funeral services were held Sunday for Eva Hauser
Gantt, 94, 820 Klumac Road, formerly of Mitchell Avenue, who died Thursday (Nov. 4, 1999)
atSalisbury Lutheran Nursing Home.
Born Sept. 20, 1905, in Salisbury, Mrs. Gantt was
a daughter of the late Theodore Eugene and Annie Melvina Plummer Hauser.
Educated in the Salisbury schools, she worked for
Fuller Furniture Co. in Hickory until she retired. Mrs. Gantt was a member of Haven
Lutheran Church and the Eastern Star in Hickory.
Her husband Edgbert Ed Gantt, died
Aug. 25, 1990.
Survivors include several nieces and nephews.
Graveside services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday at
Chestnut Hill Cemetery. The Rev. Ronald Fink, pastor of Haven Lutheran Church, officiated.
The family received friends at the church after
the service and at the home of a niece, Phyllis Carson of 428 W. Horah St.

Worlena Thomas McDuffie
The funeral will be Tuesday for Worlena Thomas
McDuffie, 76, 115 Mae Road, who died Saturday (Nov. 6, 1999) at Rowan Regional Medical
Center.
Born Aug. 11, 1923, in Rowan County, Mrs. McDuffie
was a daughter of the late Virgil and Mary Stroupe Thomas. Educated in the Rowan County
schools, she had retired from Linn-Corriher Mills. She was a member of Old Country Baptist
Church.
Her husband, Earl McDuffie, preceded her in death.
Survivors include sons John and David Bost, both
of Salisbury, and Mack Bost, York, S.C.; daughter Che Che Burton, Salisbury; brothers Buck
Thomas, Landis, Clay Thomas, Concord, and Roy Thomas, China Grove; sisters Ruth Beinge and
Hazel Thomas, both of Hickory, Peggy Stubb, China Grove, and Rachael Holshouser, Rockwell;
seven grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Services: 2 p.m. Tuesday, Old Country Baptist
Church, conducted by the Rev. Tom Lomax. The body will be placed in the church at 1:30.
Burial, West Lawn Memorial Park, China Grove.
Visitation: 7-8:30 tonight at the funeral home. At
other times the family will be at the home on Mae Road.

Sandra Hudson Prather, 33, Salisbury, formerly of
Andrews, died Friday (Nov. 5, 1999) at her residence.
Born Nov. 20, 1965, in Slidell, La., she was the
daughter of Sally and Jerry Hudson, Andrews. She was a 1983 graduate of Andrews High
School and attended Western Carolina University. A Catholic, she was a customer service
representative with Manpower Temporary Agency.
Survivors include companion Chad Anthony,
Salisbury; son Chad Anthony Prather, Salisbury; brother Dan Hudson, Robbinsville; sisters
Julia Norcross, Stecoh Simpson and Linda Simpson, Andrews; and maternal grandmother Erma

Survivors include brother William Watson, of the
home; sister Elizabeth Watson, of the home; and her maternal and paternal grandparents.
