The golf notebook ...

Crescent, Corbin Hills and McCanless golf clubs all held big fall tournaments last weekend as the 1999 season winds down at local courses.

At Crescent, Michael Kee and Dennis Andrade took an exciting victory on Saturday in the second annual Halloween Two-Man. They had a 5-under-par score of 103 for 54 holes and won a sudden-death playoff on the first extra hole over Gus Andrews and Steve Vail.

Kee and Andrade won it with a birdie 3 on No. 9, where they hit their approach shot to within a foot of the cup. The playoff format was alternate shot.

Corey Basinger and Jerry Smith, champions in 1998, were three strokes out of the lead going into the final nine holes and shot 1-under in the alternate shot format to finish one stroke back at 104.

The first flight had a four-way tie for the lead going into the final nine holes. Ron Snow and Willie Cannon shot an even-par 108 and won by three strokes. Russ Priddy and Bob Clewell were second at 111, followed by David May and Terry Smith at 112.

The second flight was the division with the biggest movers. Bruce Rogers and Mike Apone overcame a one-stroke deficit going into the final nine holes and won with a 117. Darrell Sipe and Jim Oden took second at 118. Dave Bates and Riley Morgan struggled in the best ball format, but rallied from last place to finish third at 119.

Corbin Hills held its member-member tourney Saturday and Sunday, and Bruce Hawkins and Rex Davis triumphed in the first flight with a 137 total. George Roberson-Winfred Kluttz and Terry Mulkey-Eric Mulkey each shot a 138.

The second flight was won by Andy Winders and Mike Jordan with a 143. The teams of Perry Von Canon-Lee Von Canon, Ronnie Eidson-Tim Gardner and Steve Clark-Bill Yost tied at 147.

Ronnie Roberson and Eddie Trexler paced the third flight with a 146, while Jon Allen-Garrett Gardner, Ken Carter-Ray Eanes and Brian Tuck-Richard Dwiggins each shot a 150.

At McCanless, Nick Sabol and Henry Morgan won the Carlton Jackson Sr. Memorial Tournament with a 2 and 1 victory over Charlie Gillispie and Jim Sechler in Sunday’s finals.

Thad Sprinkle and Jason Lowder won the first flight with a 4 and 3 triumph over Joey Boley and Gene Mothershead.

Chris Schackleford and Chris Ledbetter teamed to take the second flight, topping Charlie Hawkins and Larry Frost 2 and 1.

Don Smith and Charles Roberts paced the third flight, beating Charles Long and Robert Ward 5 and 4.

Gary and Ritchie Fesperman topped Jim and Robin Bradshaw 3 and 2 for the fourth flight title.

Preston Jones Sr. and Jr. teamed up for a 2 and 1 win over Greg Wagoner and Chris Mako in the fifth flight.

RASH OF ACES: When 69-year-old Sonny Epting of Salisbury scored a hole in one at Kannapolis Country Club last week, it not only was his sixth ace, but it was the course’s seventh ace in October.

Epting, who is back playing golf after being sidelined with a stroke in 1997, got his ace with a 7-iron from the white tees on the par-3, 113-yard No. 2 hole, where playing partners Jay Duke, Jim West and Gene Auten hit shots into the water from the gold tees.

Epting had five witnesses, including Don McDaniel and Jerry Spry, who were playing behind the foursome.

Other October aces on No. 2 were made by Bill Morgan with a 5-wood from the white tees at 125 yards while playing with Ellison Neal, Jim Miller and Mike Lowder, and by pro Dirk Schultz with an 8-iron from 163 yards in the recent PGA Qualifying Tournament.

The par-3 11th hole yielded four aces during the month, including three from the gold tees (147 yards) by Guy Christy and Joe Price with 9-irons and J.R. Harward with a 7-iron. Christy’s ace was witnessed by JimPerkins, Bill Hare and Al Sirois and Price’s by Craig Argo. Bob Boswell, JohnnyLewis and Rocky Durham were playing with Harward. Tom Wilson aced the same hole from the white tees (140 yards) with an 8-iron while playing with Basil Untz, Earl Woodall and Larry Cobb.

At the Warrior Golf Club, there have been two recent aces on the par-3 12th hole. Carlton Chambers got his hole in one with a 4-iron from the white tees (177 yards) while playing with Charlie Jacobs, Nick Duncan and Kurt Helms. Joe Frazier aced the same hole from the black tees (222 yards) with a 3-iron while playing with Ricardo Bailey.
