The golf notebook ... Crescent, Corbin
Hills and McCanless golf clubs all held big fall tournaments last weekend as the 1999
season winds down at local courses.
At Crescent, Michael Kee and Dennis Andrade took
an exciting victory on Saturday in the second annual Halloween Two-Man. They had a
5-under-par score of 103 for 54 holes and won a sudden-death playoff on the first extra
hole over Gus Andrews and Steve Vail.
Kee and Andrade won it with a birdie 3 on No. 9,
where they hit their approach shot to within a foot of the cup. The playoff format was
alternate shot.
Corey Basinger and Jerry Smith, champions in 1998,
were three strokes out of the lead going into the final nine holes and shot 1-under in the
alternate shot format to finish one stroke back at 104.
The first flight had a four-way tie for the lead
going into the final nine holes. Ron Snow and Willie Cannon shot an even-par 108 and won
by three strokes. Russ Priddy and Bob Clewell were second at 111, followed by David May
and Terry Smith at 112.
The second flight was the division with the
biggest movers. Bruce Rogers and Mike Apone overcame a one-stroke deficit going into the
final nine holes and won with a 117. Darrell Sipe and Jim Oden took second at 118. Dave
Bates and Riley Morgan struggled in the best ball format, but rallied from last place to
finish third at 119.
Corbin Hills held its member-member tourney
Saturday and Sunday, and Bruce Hawkins and Rex Davis triumphed in the first flight with a
137 total. George Roberson-Winfred Kluttz and Terry Mulkey-Eric Mulkey each shot a 138.
The second flight was won by Andy Winders and Mike
Jordan with a 143. The teams of Perry Von Canon-Lee Von Canon, Ronnie Eidson-Tim Gardner
and Steve Clark-Bill Yost tied at 147.
Ronnie Roberson and Eddie Trexler paced the third
flight with a 146, while Jon Allen-Garrett Gardner, Ken Carter-Ray Eanes and Brian
Tuck-Richard Dwiggins each shot a 150.
At McCanless, Nick Sabol and Henry Morgan won the
Carlton Jackson Sr. Memorial Tournament with a 2 and 1 victory over Charlie Gillispie and
Jim Sechler in Sundays finals.
Thad Sprinkle and Jason Lowder won the first
flight with a 4 and 3 triumph over Joey Boley and Gene Mothershead.
Chris Schackleford and Chris Ledbetter teamed to
take the second flight, topping Charlie Hawkins and Larry Frost 2 and 1.
Don Smith and Charles Roberts paced the third
flight, beating Charles Long and Robert Ward 5 and 4.
Gary and Ritchie Fesperman topped Jim and Robin
Bradshaw 3 and 2 for the fourth flight title.
Preston Jones Sr. and Jr. teamed up for a 2 and 1
win over Greg Wagoner and Chris Mako in the fifth flight.

RASH OF ACES: When 69-year-old
Sonny Epting of Salisbury scored a hole in one at Kannapolis Country Club last week, it
not only was his sixth ace, but it was the courses seventh ace in October.
Epting, who is back playing golf after being
sidelined with a stroke in 1997, got his ace with a 7-iron from the white tees on the
par-3, 113-yard No. 2 hole, where playing partners Jay Duke, Jim West and Gene Auten hit
shots into the water from the gold tees.
Epting had five witnesses, including Don McDaniel
and Jerry Spry, who were playing behind the foursome.
Other October aces on No. 2 were made by Bill
Morgan with a 5-wood from the white tees at 125 yards while playing with Ellison Neal, Jim
Miller and Mike Lowder, and by pro Dirk Schultz with an 8-iron from 163 yards in the
recent PGA Qualifying Tournament.
The par-3 11th hole yielded four aces during the
month, including three from the gold tees (147 yards) by Guy Christy and Joe Price with
9-irons and J.R. Harward with a 7-iron. Christys ace was witnessed by JimPerkins,
Bill Hare and Al Sirois and Prices by Craig Argo. Bob Boswell, JohnnyLewis and Rocky
Durham were playing with Harward. Tom Wilson aced the same hole from the white tees (140
yards) with an 8-iron while playing with Basil Untz, Earl Woodall and Larry Cobb.
At the Warrior Golf Club, there have been two
recent aces on the par-3 12th hole. Carlton Chambers got his hole in one with a 4-iron
from the white tees (177 yards) while playing with Charlie Jacobs, Nick Duncan and Kurt
Helms. Joe Frazier aced the same hole from the black tees (222 yards) with a 3-iron while
playing with Ricardo Bailey.

TWO-MAN SLATED: A two-man best ball tourney will
be held at Warrior Nov. 20-21.
The first round of the 36-hole stroke play event
will start at 9 a.m. Saturday. Teams will then be flighted for Sundays second round,
also set for 9.
The entry fee is $150 per team for Warrior members
and $200 per team for non-members. The fee includes cart and green fees both days, lunch
on Saturday and breakfast on Sunday.
The first 64 paid teams will be accepted.
Gift certificates will be awarded to first- and
second-place teams in each flight.

PTA EVENT: Larry Johnson and Joe Domago won the
recent North Rowan Elementary School PTA Golf Tournament at McCanless.
Second place went to Johnny Morris and Greg Ball,
while Mike Williams and David Porter finished third.
