The Elizabeth Hanford Dole Chapter of the American Red Cross has a new executive director.

Kevin Long, 30, has been associated with the Red Cross for more than 17 years as both a volunteer and professional staff member. He began his current position Feb. 22 after serving 1 1/2 years as transportation services director for the Greater Carolinas Red Cross Chapter in Charlotte.

Long replaces Pat Gooley, who resigned in September. He will be responsible for the day-to-day operations of the Dole Chapter, a United Way agency.

‘‘With the wealth of Red Cross experience which Kevin brings to the position, I know our chapter is in excellent hands,’’ said Board Chair Karen South Carpenter. ‘‘I think the community can expect to see exciting and positive growth in all of our services and programs.’’

Long is a member of the Red Cross national disaster response effort and has been part of the teams responding to the Minnesota floods, Hurricane Fran and the tornado in Clemmons. He is also a registered nurse and served in the U.S. Army.

His wife, Jane, also works for the American Red Cross as branch office director of the Northwest North Carolina chapter in Davie County. They have two daughters.

Long says he has big plans for the Salisbury chapter.

‘‘I have been pleased with the support that I have received since I’ve been here,’’ Long said. ‘‘I hope to make this the best chapter in the state.’’
