Speedway to Build Camping Resort

CONCORD – The recently renamed Lowe’s Motor Speedway is trying to accommodate race fans who want it all – high-energy racing and a relaxing camping experience.

A project has begun to turn woodlands next to the track’s parking areas into campgrounds, complete with waterfalls, ponds and trails.

Lowe’s Motor Speedway announced Monday plans to build its ‘‘Seven Flags Camping Resort’’ across from the entrance to the Charlotte track.

The camping resort will provide about 250 sites.

Although many race fans will prefer the tradition of camping in the open areas surrounding the track, many others may enjoy a more natural-feeling campground, according to Holly Stoner, spokeswoman.

The camping resort, which Stoner said should be ready by May, is adjacent to the public Rocky River Golf Club.

‘‘It will be like you’re in the woods, except you’re actually at the race track,’’ Stoner said.

The campsites will offer amenities. Already, workers have built restrooms and a shower house facility. Lots will include water, sewer and power hookups as well as picnic tables, grills and even cable television service, for an extra fee. The speedway is also planning an entertainment pavilion, picnic areas and an ‘‘RV Superstore’’ offering rentals, sales and service.

Race week campers must buy a package the begins at $1,000 per year. Campsites will be available during non-race times on a daily or weekly basis.

Campers may make reservations by calling Ann Robinson, sales manager for the Seven Flags Camping Resort, at (704) 455-4445.
